My old and basic (for current standards) sound system finally gave out, so it was time to get a new one. I was looking for something that was better than TV speakers, ideally with a simple surround system. Although I'm not an audiophile (and a bit of a cheapskate), good audio is important to me. So when the Ultimea 5.1 sound bar was 35% off during the Boxing Day Sale I bought it, and I'm glad I did.
Other reviewers indicate that it's simple to set up, and that was also my experience. I use it in conjunction with an older (7 years now) video projector, and even though it doesn't have the latest connection technology, it took me maybe 20 minutes to figure out how to connect the projector to the sound bar itself. Setting up the subwoofer took the time it takes to plug in the cable in the back and into the wall outlet, and connecting the two smaller rear speakers was just a matter of plugging them into the subwoofer. Done.
Our rec room is about 12 x 14 feet in size, which seems to be the right size for this sound system. At 90% percent volume it easily fills the space with clear and undistorted audio, making it impossible to talk unless you yell, so I typically leave it between 70-75%.
The basic built-in settings will let you quickly adjust the bass levels from a teeth-rattling rumbling to more natural bass levels (to me), and the surround level can be adjusted from almost none to way too much (I have it usually at the default 0 or 1 in a range from -6 to 6).
There are also 3 handy presets for the type of audio you're looking for (movie, music, speech), which are surprisingly effective.
If you connect the system to your phone you can download the Ultimea audio app, allowing you to fine-tune the audio in-depth, but I find I'm not using it very much; most of the time the presets seem to do just fine for me.
All in all an excellent entry-level 5.1 surround system for smaller to medium-sized spaces, and you can't beat the price. If you're looking to fill a larger space with sound you'll want to invest in something beefier, and audiophiles might consider this system a bit too basic to their taste. But it serves my needs just fine and I hope to enjoy it for years to come.
