Trigger isn't sensitive enough

Well the mice appear to have zero problem just lifting the bait right off the trap without setting it off. I've put them out several times with a few different types of bait (peanut butter, nuts, meat) and every time, without fail, the evil little rodent(s) manage to eat the bait without setting off the trap.

Even when I smeared peanut butter not just in the compartment but all over the trigger as well - they just clean it off and scurry along. I tried adjusting the trap so that it was on a hair trigger, I even lubricated them a bit such that it was difficult for me to even set them down without causing them to spring - and still I inevitably return to a baitless trap in the morning. I think they're small enough to fit underneath the trigger, holding the trigger in place rather than pushing it down and releasing the spring action.

So at this point I'm just feeding the little monsters.... At first I avoided the glue traps because they seemed cruel (and I'm not stoked at all about having to dispose of a live mouse...) but at this point I'm so frustrated with the rodent that I don't care about being humane anymore, and a small part of me might even enjoy making it suffer a little bit, for all the suffering it's caused me.

This filthy plague carrying fiend needs to get dead and these traps simply don't cut it. They aren't sensitive enough.
