    This spade is very durable and is great for digging. The stainless steel shovel end extends up the shaft of the handle on the shovel quite a ways, making the shaft very strong and excellent for prying out each shovel full of dirt.

    This is a pretty decent made in china knockoff of a traditional english garden shovel. The head is a nicely made stainless piece that seems to be one piece. So far it's holding up well, still has a handsome mirror finish despite considerable abuse.

    The handle is a little less well put together than the head. I'm getting a little separation of the t handle, but the bolts are still holding it together. The handle also has some sort of polyurethane coating that is starting to blister and peel. Not a huge deal for a garden tool, but for the price I'd expected a little more durability. I'll probably strip it and linseed oil the handle, which is a nicer and more traditional way to finish this type of tool.

    Overall this has been a handy tool in the garden for smaller jobs and digging around roots. Price is decent for what you get.

    I am a very experienced and homesteading gardener, I take all my tools, planters, amendments, and other garden items very seriously. When I test items for review, they are evaluated under real-world use in my garden or yard...not just unboxing or pictures. I am picky and critical in reviewing and care little about brand names or product claims. If they are good, I will praise and recommend them, and if not, I will fully explain my reasoning for saying so. Honesty is my reviewing policy!

    The difference between this incredibly well-designed and highly robust Square Border Spade and others is dramatic! It is simply the BEST design and functioning straight-edge I have EVER had the opportunity to own and use! It is one of a number of specific types of shovels and spades made by this company that has exceeded the design and build of any others I have EVER used!

    This 41.3" Square Digging Spade is very robustly constructed with exceptional attention to detail and quality. The blade is made of strong stainless steel with the edge properly sharpened and appropriately rounded. The blade is attached to an Ash Wood handle that is very ergonomic and comfortable to use. This is the little brother of their larger 43" Digging Spade.

    The rollover top edge of the blade is easy on feet when digging deep, and the blade really DOES dig...like a hot knife through butter...even in heavy clay turf! Unreal how well and easily this Trenching Shovel just WORKS!

    I first used this Berry&Bird Digging Spade to create a perfect, fine edge in the turf around raised garden beds to create a wall for the installation of landscape timbers and weed barrier surrounding a walking path. It made it so easy and painless. MUCH easier than using lesser-made shovels and spades! The smaller size of this flat edge spade allows for high precision edging and turf cutting. Using the spade in a flatter position will easily cut slices of grass turf for replanting. Also great for breaking up hard clumps of dirt or clay..

    The robust, quality construction of the shovel alludes to the likelihood of a VERY long life. The bright, shiny, heavy-duty stainless steel blade is resistant to rust and corrosion...and is super-easy to clean and return to new-looking condition. Simply wipe, or spray the dirt off the stainless steel for a persistent shine. The Ashwood D-Handle and shaft can be maintained in perfect condition by lightly wiping it with raw Linseed Oil occasionally. (not BOILED Linseed Oil). That will maintain the Ash wood's condition for many seasons!

    This is unquestionably the one of the two best straight-edge diggers I have EVER used, with only its bigger brother in contention. The design, construction, quality, material, and ergonomics are just incredibly good! So good, in fact, that I have ordered ALL of the new Berry&Bird garden digging tools for use in my homestead yard and gardening activities. I expect these to last my lifetime with appropriate maintenance and care. They are designed in the USA; manufactured in China, but with obvious strict quality control and oversight.

    For me, this spade rates an unequivocal VERY STRONG FIVE STAR rating and earns my honest and exceptionally hearty recommendation. Clearly the best of the best, and every time I use it, the word that most comes to mind is simply "WOW"!

    A sad thing happened to the tool industry ... when large isle home stores opened, people expected to find racks of $20 shovels and $10 rakes, cheaply made which would break after a year of use. And they didn't care. They'd keep replacing the broken tools ... season after season, paying $10 each time. Anyone born before 1990 will remember going into their grandfather's shed and seeing shovels, spades and lawn sprinklers manufactured 40 years ago with an aged patina but in perfectly good shape after heavy use. Craftsman and other brands which once stood for quality were sold off to Chinese conglomerates for the name ... and the legendary quality became more of the same 'designed to fail' after a year junk.

    This shovel feels like the ones in my grandfather's shed. It's heavyweight, well made and seems like it will last a lifetime, or more. No corners were cut. The heavy stainless steel blade won't dent or bend. It has a beveled edge for easier digging ... even rocky soil is no match. The handle is made of strong, dense wood and the handle is constructed the way English shovels of the 1940's and 1950's were made before plastic handles that always pop off were the standard.

    Sure, you pay $75 for this ... unheard of today in the big box store culture. But considering, I'd gamble that even with heavy use, this will last you 25 years ... if you buy a $20 cheap shovel at the home stores, which breaks after 2-5 years ... 5 x $20 = 125. So paying for long lasting quality upfront actually works out in the end from a return on investment standpoint.

    The only drawbacks I can see:

    - I am 6'4 and the handle is a bit short for me. My guess is these tools were made for females in mind. A gardening shovel that is made to the specifications it could do construction jobs.

    - The handle and area where the blade connects to the wooden handle are possible areas of failure but they seem well made, so I believe they will last. They are reinforced with bolts in some places.

    - They went a little branding crazy with the logos

    Overall, I am very impressed with this shovel ... and amazed that it was Made in China, which normally raises red flags about quality. This is one of the nicest shovels I've owned and I will seek out other items from this brand. It's 100% quality ... the type of quality you just don't see anymore. I would recommend making the investment in a high end shovel like this. It will pay off in the long run. Our grandparents would have agreed.
