I bought this for my RAV4. Set-up was very simple: plug it in, go to Bluetooth settings, and give the necessary permission. Set-up took a total of about 30 seconds. The device is very small and connects to my phone very quickly when I enter the car - about 15 seconds at most. The performance has been flawless and I have not encountered any dropped connection issues that several other reviewers have mentioned. Connecting CarPlay wirelessly is much more convenient than having to use a lightning cable each time that you enter the car. Overall, I am very satisfied with the Ottocast CarPlay Adapter and would definitely buy it again.

Had this installed in my 2020 Miata RF.

First the positives - it does work for wireless CarPlay and the sound was good, and the CarPlay functionality was fine. It was small enough to stay tucked away on the side of the transmission tunnel trim, held there by velcro.

However, it would be slow to connect my phone and initiate CarPlay ... it would take about 60-90 seconds to connect. Albeit this may be an issue inherent to the Mazda infotainment system.

Now the the negative - it stopped working after 2 months, and no longer loads up CarPlay. This occurred spontaneously. It was working in the morning, then later in the afternoon it stopped working.

It doesn't look like there is any option for a refund.

I am using this on the 2019 Genesis. Set up is easy. When it works, everything is good. However, a number of times the audio just stops working (usually with me already on the road, so I don't have time to stop and troubleshoot the problem). The rest of the carplay set up is working fine, I can use the menus, etc, but nothing comes from the audio. I try music, nothing. I try Audible, nothing. And nothing from navigation either. Of course I try changing volume on the car, that has no effect. I would try pulling the adapter out, and plugging it back in while the car is still running, but this does not fix it. In fact it usually gets into a worse case where the carplay will connect for a second, and then disconnect.

When this happens, I am forced to switch to using wired carplay (same phone, same car obviously), and it is ok, but I really would like to be a reliable set up.

Usually later the same day or different day, after car has been turned off and back on, no other changes with anything, it all works again.

There have been some occassions where the phone is resting on the wireless charger (next to the usb port), and the GPS doesn't seem to work, until I move the phone higher, either put it on the dash somewhere or in a cup holder.

A couple of years ago I looked into wireless CarPlay adapters, and my general impression was that it was something of a nightmare product category: nothing worked correctly, and there were UI lags and incompatibilities galore. Just based on the general sentiment, I decided not to buy any adapter at all.

More recently, I came across a recommendation for the Ottocast on, I believe, Wirecutter. I fully expected to try it out and return it. But to my surprise, it has worked flawlessly. And wireless CarPlay is really, really nice.

There is a noticeable lag in UI responsiveness compared to the wired version of CarPlay. But “noticeable” is pretty minor in the grand scheme of things. It’s a modest cost for wireless CarPlay and one that I’m more than willing to pay. Let’s keep in mind what “wireless“ really means: it means you don’t do diddly-squat. You sit your fat, lazy butt in the car, and the CarPlay UI shows up on the car’s display. Your music or audiobook or podcast resumes right where you left off, automatically. Perfect.

I have received a couple of messages from the vendor begging me not to return the Ottocast until I’ve given them a chance to help with troubleshooting. Not because I had problems or because I had any complaint; I’m guessing that it’s still a difficult market to serve and that not everyone’s experience will be as smooth as mine. Fair enough. But I’m pretty sure that this vendor will work with you to resolve any problems.
