Feb 13, 2025: Received today, I first of all tasted a few grains on their own and find it to be a fair amount saltier than regular commercial brands, so there isn’t call for as much to flavour food with and, hence, is one aspect that makes up for the price difference. I think at least a good part of the difference in saltiness would be due it containing only pure seasalt, without added iodine and there is NO silica or other anti-caking agents added. So one thing to keep in mind is to ensure the storage of the bag in a dry place.
The salt grains are very fine and a few minutes after my initial taste, once the saltiness had dissipated I suddenly noticed that I was tasting a subtle hint of kelp- which, if you’ve never been to the west coast, the west coast waters contain ample amounts of, so the slight taste stands to perfect reason. I lived my first 40 years on the west coast so for me, that flavour succeeded in releasing lots of feel-good endorphins as an added bonus.
Later on I sprinkled a bit on tomato slices, which was seriously like a taste from heaven. And no sharp taste as with most table salts.
Another thing to note is that there are NO grains of sand left behind in this salt, (as there ARE grains of sand left behind in, for example, the Redmond “Real Salt” brand).
My original sole purpose for buying this salt was for the making of DIY nasal rinse, being that I’m currently, for at least the next 4 years, of the “buy Canadian but, really, buy anything but American” stance - which, for me, as much as possible includes any possible or stated product, product ingredient or component of a product imported from the US. So that canceled out any commercial nasal rinse packets. But this salt is so wonderful that I will be using it for much more.
I’m about to purchase Vancouver Island’s large flaked salt for cooking with, which I think it should also serve as a lovely garnishing salt. I don’t see anywhere that it’s certified kosher so if one is thinking about using it, anyway, in lieu of kosher salt for cooking because of the salt form, keep in mind it likely contains trace microscopic crustaceans that are non-kosher. Otherwise there’s no reason not to use it in cooking in place of koshering salt- remembering that it’s saltier so start with less.
I see now that Vancouver Island also carries a salt with added kelp, and 2 sizes of Maple Smoked Wood. Will have to try sometime.
About the bag itself: the ziplock style is the sort that you pry apart the top, without cutting, to get to the zip (same as with a bag of cbd/cbn/thc gummies), so don’t make my mistake of cutting across the top unless you’d prefer to clip shut.
