    I used this to connect my Solar Assistant to my Sol-Ark inverter through the RS485 port so I can use both the Sol-Ark app and SA at the same time. It also allows me to keep logging data with Sol-Ark and not lose that data.

    The product is marketed as a “USB to RS-485 bidirectional converter (FT232RL + SP485EEN)”, but in practice it enumerates on Linux strictly as FT232R USB UART (VID:PID 0403:6001) using the ftdi_sio driver.

    In my setup (Raspberry Pi, Linux), the device cannot receive any Modbus RTU responses over RS-485:
    • Serial port opens successfully
    • TX frames are sent
    • 0 frames are ever received, across all baud rates (2400–19200), parities, slave IDs, and function codes
    • RS-485 ioctl (TIOCSRS485) is not supported
    • Correct A/B wiring, grounding, and powered PLC confirmed

    This strongly suggests the adapter either:
    • lacks a properly functioning RS-485 transceiver, or
    • does not handle DE/RE direction control correctly for half-duplex RS-485 on Linux.

    As a result, it is not usable for Modbus RTU / industrial RS-485 communication, despite the product description.

    It may still work as a basic USB-UART, but buyers expecting reliable RS-485 (PLC / Modbus / industrial control) should be cautious.

    Recommendation to vendor: clearly document Linux compatibility and RS-485 direction control behavior, or revise the listing if the device is functionally USB-UART only.
