Not good for playing 4k mkv files from disc or from attached hard drive
New Panasonic 4K Blu Ray players are not up to scratch My 10 year old Samsung UBD-K8500 is even though it is showing age and sometimes struggles with playing some 4k content particularly when there is some significant sound at the same times is infinitely better than these brand new Panasonic ones. They don't recognize sound files integrated into mkv files I have already moved onto discs when 10 year old Samsung UBD-K8500 does They don't have the processing power to play files on hard drives that work perfectly fine when the drives are perfectly fine on my Samsung player and my media players I have bought here on Â鶹Çø I was honestly expecting these two new purchases for my home in the city and the cottage to be a step up rather than a step down. In case you ask, I did connect the drives to the blue USB ports (high speed) and not the slower black ones. And yes, I tried to play the files before and after I connected the units to the Internet to discover that they already had the latest firmware - no luck either way, I thought these were powerful up-to-date units given the expensive prices attached to them.

After doing some research on 4K players, I decided to buy this Panasonic 4K to replace a less expensive LG player that I took back as it was not that great and had some freezing issues. Even though this Panasonic player is more $, it is much better as the audio & video is far superior. Really notice the much improved video processing the most, as the colours and details are better and this player does a really good job at upgrading DVD and Blu-ray to look closer to 4k. While I would have liked Dolby Vision which this player doesn¡¯t offer, it was not worth the extra cost to go to the model above this unit plus not all studios offer this in their discs. The HDR10 & HDR10+ does a great job on discs too. This player also had no issue playing discs that were an issue in the LG unit.

Decent remote and much better than the LG as a bit bigger but still not as solid or as large as the older DVD players use to offer. This player¡¯s remote does a better job when pressing buttons as not as picky about where you point it as compared to the lesser LG model and buttons a bit bigger. Will say the Netflix button above the directional arrow area can be a pain as found you can hit it and takes you out of the film. Bad layout design that should be corrected in a future update.

Do not recommend buying this for streaming as a clunky interface and limited in the apps that can be used. Real reason to buy this is for playing discs - for streaming buy a separate streaming device like an AppleTV 4K or Firestick etc.

Recommend grabbing this unit over a less expensive Sony or LG model - also a decent buy for just over $300 when you have a player that does a far superior job with image processing. Add on top that a player that has no issues playing discs that I have tried on it - played CD, DVD, Blu-ray & 4K - plus no skipping.

Went to this player from a Sony x800. The picture quality is amazing, mostly due to the hdr optimizer which helps match the output of hdr to your TVs max nit output. Really is a game changer.
Running this with a Samsung tv which uses hdr10+ , so no loss to me not having Dolby vision.
I found the Sony to have better display for in movie chapters, time left etc., and the build quality isn¡¯t as good as the Sony player ie: full metal chassis and size and weight.
All in all loving this player, the pros definitely out way the cons!

Was looking for a long time and didn't like the reviews for some of the available 4k players. Not that they didn't sound good but they were lacking features I was looking for. When I found this Panasonic player, it had most of what I was looking for and it was 200.00 less than I could purchase it for locally. It works fantastic, puts out a very good picture and integrates well with my Anthem stereo system. Very happy with this purchase. Thanks.

The image quality is amazing but unfortunately for me this player kept freezing up on several discs which is strange because I bought this based on the reviews of how it doesn¡¯t freeze up. I probably got a lemon so I returned it and took a chance on the Sony X800m2 and it is working flawlessly. The strange thing is there are numerous reviews of the Sony being unreliable and freezing up. But for me it¡¯s been rock solid so far. Just goes to show that you can¡¯t just base decisions on reviews alone. You need to try for yourself.

Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2021

Unlike my last 4k player, the Sony x700, bought early this year, this Panasonic is head and shoulders better. It does everything it does better than the Sony--not just a little better--a lot better. It's real close to perfect, imo. Don't buy the x700 Sony player unless you plan to start a betting pool on whether or not your streaming movies from Netflix and Â鶹Çø or your DVDs, your BluRays, or your 4k discs will lock up and freeze--or you want to take bets on how often a single stream or disc will lockup and freeze. The only relief for the Sony x700 when it locks up (not if) is a power off. I'm not anti-Sony by any means, in fact I originally bought the x700 because my streaming and BluRay experience with my prior Sony BluRay player was excellent--not a single freeze or lockup in years of use--right up until Â鶹Çø Prime Video dropped the player due to its obsolescence. If you are skeptical, just Bing/Google/Duck "Sony x700 freezes" or something similar and you will be amazed at how many similar reports you will discover. Unfortunately, for me, I bought the x700 before I did my usual due diligence on my experience with my last Sony player/streamer because that experience had been so good. One guy I read commented that he had never had a lockup with his x700 over a 17-month period; another guy I read commented in various AV forums that he had to swap his x700 out *five times* before he got one that wouldn't freeze. It's such a common experience with the x700 that Sony even addresses the freezes on the official support site for the x700, and provides power-cycling instructions.

The only thing the UB420-k doesn't have that some people want these days is Dolby Vision support. I don't have a DV television, just an HDR 10 television, and didn't want to pay $200 more for the UB-820 just to get Dolby VIsion support...;) (The x700 supports Dolby Vision, but in a constantly freezing product, who cares?)

Even the settings pages for the UB420 are simple, direct, extremely easy to understand, and every setting has an explanation included on-screen. The interface couldn't be simpler to use. Just tick the feature boxes down the list and the UB-420 does it right. (The Sony x700 setting pages were enough to confuse even me, and I like to think I know what I'm doing...;))

One last comparative comment: the remote for the UB420 is far superior to the one included with the x700--because it not only is ~33% larger, which allows you to feel your way around the buttons comfortably, it also means the keys are often larger and spaced further apart. It's very comfortable in my hands in use.

I read the negative comments about the UB-420 in this forum and they left me shaking my head...;) Not even close to my own experience. It works seamlessly and perfectly with my Sony AV receiver-amp, as well, btw.

Last, after ~48 total hours of disc playing consisting of DVD movies, BluRay movies and 4k movies, it's a joy to report not a single lockup or freeze! (I use a ROKU Ultra to stream these days.)
