Product Description

u12

The NH-U12S chromax.black is an all-black version of Noctua’s NH-U12S premium-quality quiet CPU cooler. Thanks to the same proven slim-tower heatsink design and NF-F12 PWM fan, it stays true to the NH-U12S’s successful formula of fusing excellent cooling performance with superb quietness of operation and outstanding RAM, case and PCIe compatibility. At the same time, the chromax.black version with its black fan and black coated heatsink combines these assets with a sleek stealth look. Topped off with the renowned SecuFirm2 multi-socket mounting system and Noctua’s enthusiast-grade NT-H1 thermal compound thermal compound, the NH-U12S chromax.black is a premium choice for customers who seek a highly compatible 120mm heatsink that looks just as great as it cools.

u12s

Classic 120mm tower size for excellent overall compatibility

Standing 158mm tall, the NH-U12S is short enough to fit most modern mid- or high-end tower cases. Measuring 125mm wide (including fan and fan clips), the cooler stays clear of the top PCIe slot on most standard ATX or Micro-ATX motherboards, ensuring optimum compatibility with multi-GPU setups.

ram

100% RAM compatibility

Thanks to its slim design with only 45mm fin depth, the NH-U12S will not overhang the RAM slots even with two fans installed. This gives the user full access to the memory modules on all current CPU sockets and ensures 100% compatibility with tall heatspreaders or optional memory fans.

f12

NF-F12 120mm Focused Flow fan

Recommended by more than 150 hardware publications and thousands of enthusiasts worldwide, the Noctua’s premium-quality NF-F12 Focused Flow 120mm fan is renowned for combining superb static pressure, excellent heatsink performance and surprising quietness of operation.

u12

Colour-customisable

Using the optional NA-HC1 and NA-HC2 heatsink covers as well as the NA-SAVP1 anti-vibration pads (available in black, blue, green, red, yellow, white), the NH-U12S chromax.black can be fully customised to fit popular build colour schemes such as black and red or black and white.

Buy a 2nd fan. It is definitely worth it.
5 out of 5 stars
Buy a 2nd fan. It is definitely worth it.
I previously owned a Corsair H100iv2 CPU liquid cooler with idle temps of 19-25C, under max load 45C, 2hr stress test 52C. With the Noctua NH-U125 that I currently have installed 28-31C idle temps, under max load 50C, 2hr stress test 65C. At Noctua $94.95(CAD) vs Corsair $124.99(CAD) you get what you pay for. The price seems fair for its performance. Honestly, if you can expense a water cooler and trust having one in your build then I'd just go for it. If not, then this definitely would not be a bad start for an CPU air cooler. *This is a 2nd review after ordering a 2nd fan for my Noctua NH-U125. I am now saying if you're going to get this CPU air cooler, order the 2nd fan with it as well!. Also, I figured if I could spend close to $150 for a Corsair liquid cooler for "bEsT PeRfoRmAnCe" then why not do the same for my Noctua?. Plus, you will not be upset with the performance! I can actually say I am happy with my overall purchase!. Idle temps 29-30C, casual load (e.x checking email, watching YouTube, surfing web) 30-31C, under heavy load (gaming, streaming, discord, music, etc.) 45-50C, 2h stress test 60-62C. I should also clarify or make sense to my previous post where I said "max load". I should've said "heavy load" as my "max loads" would've actually been the stress test temps. So, Noctua NH-U125 $94.95CAD + Noctua NF- F12 cooling fan $33.16CAD = $128.11CAD (before taxes) for the same performance as or better in some cases than a liquid cooler was a good purchase. Notes: Noise level is quiet. Much quieter than my previous liquid cooler or liquid coolers I've came across. I run my fans at 64% which is around or little over 1200RPM on my front fan and 1500RPM on my back fan. I am comfortable with that as I receive desired/reasonable temps . (Note: Temps do spike and goes right back to its actual temp, but that's normal of a CPU to do that.) I am a believer that ambient temperature affects CPU temps so I keep a window cracked about 4-5 feet away from my pc so its keeps the room cool and fresh air gets in. In the winter, I feel its a plus when the room gets cold as my temps are rock solid at times (I start to think my pc froze, lol). Overall the best purchase you can make on a CPU air cooler. I would now even rule out getting a liquid cooler if you can purchase this with a 2nd fan.

I needed a new cooler for my ASUS Z390 TUF-Gaming Plus WIFI ATX motherboard since I lost the mounting plates for previous cooler (switched from AMD to Intel CPU). I heard the Noctua fans were really quiet and like everyone else I really can't stand that brown color. The backplate for the classic EVO 212 was too tall for my case (Elite 430)- again typical problems with EVO 212 just being such an awkward size for so many systems. Thought I'd give this a try because it looks awesome and have heard good things, and the price seemed reasonable.

Not only did the NH-U12S backplate fit just fine, it was far easier to install than the D92 I had previously. It fits perfectly and the instructions were fairly straight forward, with lots of guides online to help guide me.

The fan is remarkably quiet I honestly thought my previous fans were quiet but I'm going to be replacing every fan in my system now with Noctua (if I can find black) or something similar. It keeps the CPU very cool and even when it picks up at full RPM its very quiet - and I'm not even using the like adapter PWM switch it came with (which allegedly makes it even quieter).

Honestly this CPU cooler looks awesome and works awesome and was almost a joy to install (took me a while, but half of that was figuring out how to use the thermal paste LOL - twist the black cap - use pliers (carefully) if you need better grip). Only complaint is that I wish it came with a second fan so I could have the push / pull arranagement - it does come with the extra clip though so you can easily attach another fan - I just want all black instead of the antique signature brown lol)

5/5 would buy again. Looks almost apple-esque if you add a matching all black push fan.

I ordered this product to cool the Ryzen 5 3600X at stock speed.

Using ARCTIC MX-4 thermal compound, under a sustained stress test and stock motherboard fan curve, this cooler was able to keep temps between 66-77 degrees celsius. At these temps my 3600X maintained a solid 4.1 Ghz on all cores at 1.3 V—reminder this was all stock settings. Note: this test was done in a well ventilated case with good airflow and chassis fans, your results will vary depending on these factors.

I’m happy with these temperatures and feel confident in this cooler’s abilities on comparable 6 core (or lower) CPUs. If I was to transition to an 8 core, I’m sure this cooler would handle it; however, personally I’d add an additional fan or upgrade to the NH-U12A or a nice Aio.

Installation was fairly easy, though word of caution, I did not use the included allen style screwdriver and as a result I over tightened the screws a few times having to undo and redo the mounting process. I’d recommend using the included allen key and applying a single rotation to the mounting screws at a time, alternating back and forth until the cooler is secure.

The fan is of course Noctua quiet and quality as expected and I have no complaints.

All of the included parts and extras made the whole kit feel complete, including a very nice case badge and thermal compound, so essentially everything you need.

Since the only moving part to this cooler is the fan, you can realistically keep on using it through multiple builds and many years. The reliability of air coolers such as these is unprecedented, and that’s why I like them so much, money well spent.

This is my first Noctua product, and I must say, I'm impressed!

The packaging is done really well and I was surprised at how much was included. It comes with many extra noise-reduction pads, fan mounting solutions for a second fan if you ever wish to install one. It came with very clear instructions and even had thermal paste included. You can really tell that Noctua cares about their products and customers with all the extras they've included. I am very pleased. It came with multiple mounting solutions for different boards and has instructions for each one of them.

It was very easy to install and I thank Noctua for the clear instructions; no need to look online on how to mount this one.

I installed it on an AMD R9 3900X. I was a little worried at first, not being sure if the single cooling tower and single fan would be sufficient for this 12-core beast, but it handles it no problem. During intense work loads it stays in the low 70s, and it idles in the high 40s to mid 50s.

I'm glad Noctua made this black version, I've always heard good things about their cooling systems but never was a fan of their original colours. This new chromax.Black looks really nice in my Corsair Graphite 760T, and looks great accompanied with my new Gigabyte Aorus motherboard.

Overall I'm really impressed with the product and all the extras included!

Overall VERY happy with this cooler. Under full gaming load I'm getting 64-67 degrees with a Ryzen 7 3800X. This is much better than getting close to 80 with the stock cooler. Idle temps are only 35-45 degrees which is quite a bit better than the 48-60 I was getting before. Install was fairly easy all though the spring mounts are kind of awkward (I'd recommend screwing them in 3 turns at a time to keep it even). You also don't need to over-tighten the screws apparently. For reference, I'm running a Fractal R5 case with a frount and rear mount fan, so only 2 fans in total (in addition to the single fan on the cooler itself).

Build quality is also excellent. Made in Taiwan instead of China which I find to be of superior quality in anything PC component I have bought. Price is a bit higher than a 212 EVO but the performance and quality is definitely worth the premium.

Overall this cooler is better than my old Corsair H60 liquid cooler and its MUCH quieter! I will never go back to liquid cooling again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent CPU cooler fan - Absolute Silence - Amazing Performance

I too would normally never write a single review on anything. Until I came into contact with the Noctua NH-U12S.

Just built a new PC and was using the AMD stock wraith prism RGB cooler on my Ryzen 3900x. As a RGB fangay, I'm definitely one to not shy away from RGB and love the gimmicks that come with it. The AMD wraith prism cooler looked alright but was significantly loud on both idle and active use (streaming/gaming/editing/etc.). I managed to reduce the noise levels during idle but it was still fluctuating between extremely loud and okay/decent. I've heard from many sources stating that this could be changed in BIOS/software and I had taken the necessary steps to reduce the noise but I noticed it would come at the cost of CPU temp or inconsistent fan levels (might be a BIOS issue).

The Noctua NH-U12S puts all of these worries to waste and more - it's a high performing fan that runs basically fully silent in both idle and active load (running at around 30-35 degrees celcius on idle). Simple to set up, manual guide easy to follow that even a monkey could do it and its compatible across both Intel and AMD sockets (seperate guides for each, all in the box).

I would hands down recommend this to anyone that is thinking between the AMD wraith prism or another CPU fan. No doubt in my mind that this would impress anyone looking to upgrade/build a new PC with AMD's latest Ryzen CPUs.
