I bought this cool set for my 6 year old who loves collecting little rocks and sea glass. She was blown away by the difference after just one hour of tumbling and was very impressed by the rocks included in the kit.
The tumbler itself is as quiet as it can be and couldn't be easier to use. Just a few rumbling sessions can turn a gravel and pebble collection into really decorative and pretty little treasures.

My contempt for the decay of National Geographic as a standard bearer of quality and integrity and beautiful purposeful design was cemented with this rock polishing kit. Everything about it was substandard. The initial supplies are pitiful. The rock samples provided are uninspiring. The sand samples are good for one small pass and then your kid is off to the craft store hoping to find more. Sooo much cheap plastic. The electricity bill will ruin you as it runs for hours + days just for a wee batch. And the design mechanics are a nightmare. After a run tumbles the plastic halves would jam up binding together like superglue. I had four grown men attempt to open it on the last use!!! Now imagine a 10-year-old girl trying to pry it apart. Highly do not recommend. 0 rating if I could. Bad everything including advertising deception. My daughter hasn't touched a rock since! National Geographic now specializing in sucking the truth and passion out of everything.

Cons: I bought this because I wanted a simpler, smaller tumbler to polish wire jewelry as well as tumble stones. Unfortunately, the tumbler didn't work with the 1 lb shot and the few pieces of jewelry I put in. It worked fine when empty. I didn't want to chance it with the rocks, so I returned. Very disappointed it didn't work for me.

This purchase made a perfect gift for the busy little mind of my stepdaughter. Wouldn't recommend for children younger than 8, and parental assistance is definitely a must or you'll have a mess on your hands.
It does take an obnoxiously long time to complete the process but that's no fault of the product, just science.
Also be careful of unplugging the system when loading. You also have to stand the container upright or else it will leak, however when it's running there are absolutely no leaks, again not the fault of the product, just science! It's a little loud so we plugged it in the garage, but if you have a basement or spare room away from sleeping areas you probably won't notice it!
There is enough grit to do 1 complete cycle, so if you plan on doing more buy extra grit packages.
All in all, very neat toy to teach kids about science.
