"Le dernier jour d'un condamné"a été écrit par Victor Hugo en 1829. Indigné par la guillotine et le traitement de la société envers les condamnés, Victor Hugo décida de dénoncer cette aberration à travers son roman : conditions de vie déplorables des prisonniers, traitement inhumain des condamnés en décrivant les souffrances morales et physiques de ces derniers. Le roman est présenté comme un journal intime d'un condamné à mort. Il y écrit ses pensées. Plus qu'un journal, c'est un véritable témoignage. Tout au long de sa vie, le condamné nous livre ses états d'âme : ses angoisses, ses tentatives d'évasion et ses espoirs d'être gracié. C'est un roman poignant où Victor hugo exprime fermement son opposition à la peine de mort décrivant l'absurdité de la société de son époque qui "rit et applaudit" à cette exécution.
L'œuvre est découpé en trois lieux : Bicêtre : le procès, la Conciergerie : le voyage vers Paris, rencontre avec un autre condamné à mort, l'Hôtel de ville : le voyage à Paris, la toilette d'un condamné et le voyage vers la place de Grève où est installé l'échafaud.

Son texte a une telle puissance de suggestion que le lecteur, s'identifiant au narrateur, partage avec lui l'angoisse et les vaines espérances. Réquisitoire le plus véhément jamais prononcé contre la peine de mort, ce roman est aussi une admirable leçon d'écriture et d'humanité. Bernard Métraux met en voix le récit poignant d'un condamné à mort et nous tient en haleine jusqu'à la dernière minute d'écoute. L'écoute en classe de ce CD est autorisée par l'éditeur.

Né à Besançon en 1802, Victor Hugo est très vite apparu comme le chef de l'école romantique. Élu à l'Académie française en 1841, il est membre de l'Assemblée législative en 1849 et député de Paris en 1871. Quand Victor Hugo meurt, à 83 ans, il a droit à des funérailles nationales et une immense foule l'accompagne. Il laisse une oeuvre inégalée.

Victor Marie Hugo (/ˈhjuːɡoʊ/; French: [viktɔʁ maʁi yɡo]; 26 February 1802 – 22 May 1885) was a French poet, novelist, and dramatist of the Romantic movement. He is considered one of the greatest and best-known French writers. In France, Hugo's literary fame comes first from his poetry and then from his novels and his dramatic achievements. Among many volumes of poetry, Les Contemplations and La Légende des siècles stand particularly high in critical esteem. Outside France, his best-known works are the novels Les Misérables, 1862, and Notre-Dame de Paris, 1831 (known in English as The Hunchback of Notre-Dame). He also produced more than 4,000 drawings, which have since been admired for their beauty, and earned widespread respect as a campaigner for social causes such as the abolition of capital punishment.

Though a committed royalist when he was young, Hugo's views changed as the decades passed, and he became a passionate supporter of republicanism; his work touches upon most of the political and social issues and the artistic trends of his time. He is buried in the Panthéon. His legacy has been honoured in many ways, including his portrait being placed on French franc banknotes.
