I'll preface this review by saying this is the first set of mid-high end headphones. Previous to this I primarily used Sennheiser HD599 SE which was a taste of what a high quality headphone is like. I got hooked and after doing a lot of research and sampling of other headphones where I could, I landed on these HiFiMan headphones. I'm driving them from a Focusrite Scarlett Solo and Schitt Magni Heresy amp.

I can't compare these to previous offerings from HiFiMan so I can't comment on the "stealth magnet" technology. I can comment on the raw sound quality, sound stage and build quality.

Pros:
- Very detailed sound. I've heard things in music and other media I've never heard before.
- Sound stage is the most open that I've ever heard in a headphone.
- The sound is not "colored" too much. To my ear it's a bit V shaped but stays relatively close to reference.
- I've never heard bass delivered with such clarity and "slam" before these. Very fun to listen to all different kinds of electronic music.

Cons:
- Build quality could be better. They don't feel like they will break too easily but I also don't feel like I can just throw them down.
- The headband is a bit uncomfortable when wearing over a long period of time (>2 hrs).
- Clamping pressure is very low, to the point where they do like to slide around a bit too much.
- The cable is not very good.

It's pretty clear what HiFiMan has done here. They aimed to deliver one of the best sounding headphones at this price point and hit it by cheaping out a bit on the materials that don't matter quite as much. The result is a headphone that maybe isn't the most comfortable to wear for a long time and makes you feel like you need to be gentle with them, but once you start listening to your favorite music, that no longer matters. Sound is crisp all throughout the frequency range with no signs of distortion even at uncomfortable listening levels. The highs are well controlled and not too sparkly, mids are a bit clinical but well balanced and lows are simply amazing. Oh that bass. It's just perfect the way it is but if you like a bit more these take to EQ very well.

Sound stage is unlike anything I've heard. Very open although my ears aren't good enough to place instruments even with Sennheiser's HD800 series so take that as you will. There's no feeling of being closed in with these.

If I could change one thing about these headphones, I would probably make the midrange a bit warmer. Other than that, I would hesitate to say they are perfect only because my sample size is just too small. I haven't heard everything in this class of headphone so maybe there's some show stopper out there that blows everything else away that I haven't heard. However I absolutely would recommend these to anyone interested in headphones with planar drivers. The price is certainly justified.

Remember to give these headphones a bit of break in time. When I first plugged them in I was turned off as the highs were too present and shrill at times. That went away over time and they sound fantastic now.

Two years ago, I wrote a detailed review of the Sennheiser HD600 ("You haven't heard it all"). I've since had the chance to sample a few other headphones, all of which have been dynamic driver models. I won't go into the technical differences here, as there are plenty of good reference guides online, but I was curious to experience planar magnetic headphones. The HIFIMAN Edition XS are my first planar headphones, which supposedly feature significant differences from dynamic drivers, in particular when compared to the "flat" signatures of most Sennheiser models.

I wouldn't update my review of the HD600. Still in awe of them, given their price to performance ratio. Still love them to death, still consider them an absolute reference in terms of neutrality and exactitude in sound reproduction. Not perfect, but a much more sane option to spending however many thousands for "true" high-end headphones in my opinion.

Now, I mostly use headphones for straight-up music listening, not gaming or production/mastering....on computers and with either a good sound card or external DAC & amplifier. All of that to give a better perspective for this review, since it's mostly a comparison with my personal reference pair.

I won't straight up comment on any QC issues, as HIFIMAN have a somewhat questionable track record in that regard, since I've only had them for a short period of time. I will update should anything come up. The Edition XS come with a very short cable that I replaced with a longer one and, from reading other reviews, might also ultimately alleviate potential issues. Packaging nets you a styrofoam stand in the most basic of cardboard boxes (though reinforced). Build quality is decent. The pads do squeak quite a bit when you shift around, but they are very comfortable. Almost no pressure out of the box. I suppose that can be a good and a bad thing: they slide a bit and the sound is affected a good deal by positioning. They're heavier than the Senn frame, a touch on the hot side, but still can be worn comfortably for hours on end, though I must say I have a slightly larger head than average.

What matters most is how they sound. I expected dramatic differences based on the many reviews out there, but in all honesty, I didn't find them *that* different from dynamic drivers...

[Sound Stage]: According to many reviews, these have a very wide stage, much bigger than the 600 lineup. I have to disagree. There's definitely a slight difference...you do get a somewhat better feel for instrument separation. Far from "big", "dramatic" or "great". Subtle.

[Bass]: I'll say that this is perhaps the biggest difference. Lower frequencies have a good deal more "punch" or "kick" on the XS...with the caveat that this requires an external amp. On motherboard/card DACs, there's little if any difference. With a decent amp though, you get kicks from drums and percussions in general which even the amp'ed up 600's can't quite manage. If you listen to a lot of dance/EDM/electronic music, it's a prefereable alternative. Perhaps this then is the biggest technical factor: I've yet to encounter appreciable differences on amp vs no-amp on dynamic drivers, but this is night & day on the XS. I listen to a very wide range of genres, so it doesn't bother me much.

[Definition / Rendering]: I give the edge to the HD600. The Edition XS do come eerily close though, much more so than the Beyerdynamic of this price range. You get better separation on the XS, but the 600 give you that subtle yet oh so appreciable extra bit of clarity on every instrument.

[Mids / Vocals]: Again, my vote goes to the 600's. This may be more of a personal preference though: as most reviews show, there's just something about the way the middle frequencies are put a touch further ahead than most, making you feel the singer is performing right in front of you and singing to you. On the Edition XS, vocals come across as another instrument, maybe just a little "muted". Probably a matter of perception upon comparing so closely with a pair that has so much emphasis.

Final thoughts: Somewhat ironically, when you consider all the above, I get the sense that the Edition XS are perhaps the more neutral headphones, in the strictest sense of the term. They've recently been taken down a notch in price, perhaps to compete more directly with the HD600. I have yet to sample the fabled Sundara's...for now, I'm left with a funny sort of comparison. A headphone that has a bit of an edge on bass, where sometimes the 600 feels a bit murky or lacking, but not quite matching it in terms of clarity.

If you're curious about planars and their purported differences, maybe this is then not the best model to pick. If you wish the 600's had just a bit more "oomph" to them and wouldn't mind sacrificing a touch of the crystal-clear rendering, XS might be a better fit for you. Do keep in mind that you'll need an amp for that. Still, I must also state that it doesn't feel artificially inflated or exagerated in any way. Kudos to HIFIMAN for keeping it altogether neutral in style. All in all, an excellent all-rounder type of headphone. A bit bulky and squeaky for the price point, but you do get performance pushing well past it.
