The crank extractor worked well. It took quite a bit of force to get the old cranks off, but the tool did the job.
But the bottom bracket tool (the 'notched socket' for removing the bottom bracket) had some problems. It fit well in the old steel bottom bracket I was removing, but the teeth were a bit too thick to fit the replacement bottom bracket (the ubiquitous Shimano BB UN300). I needed to file/grind down the teeth just a bit, to make the teeth slightly narrower, so it would get a good grip on the UN300. Once that was done, it worked fine to install the new BB.
