More than a memoir, perhaps a life lesson for all who read this

In the first chapter of Will Smith's memoir, his father tells him that he needs a new wall on the front of his "ice" shop. So he enlists eleven year old Will and his younger brother Harry to lay the bricks for the wall. He worked every day after school digging the footing, mixing the mortar and laying the bricks for nearly a year. Pretty hard work for a couple of preteen boys, I thought. They worked weekends, holidays and vacations including through the summer holiday from school that year. Rain or shine, day in and day out, they worked until it was finally done. His father told him to concentrate on one brick at a time, and not to think of the mammoth project or it would seem insurmountable. He followed his father's advice not only on the wall but for the rest of his life and career. The tremendous success he felt when he finished the wall was the same he would feel every time he finished a project in his life. Like his album sales and awards for his music as the Fresh Prince, like his eleven year, award winning sitcom, Fresh Prince of Bel Air and his many no. 1 winning opening weekends for plenty of his movies, he continued to lay the bricks of his own future. And in his personal life, he eventually achieved a long lasting marriage to a woman of his equal. And he did not abandon his son from his first marriage, rather he embraced the child's mother and included her in all the family gatherings, like birthdays, Christmas and special occasions and even holidays. Then he was able to still be a full time Dad to his eldest son, and include him in the family along with his new brother and sister. That's quite a feat. A lot of credit must be extended to his new
wife, Jada, who was all in with the decision to do that.
This is not simply a list of his achievements but it is also his way of giving us all a lesson like the one he received when he was only eleven. When his father lay dying, and Will went to be with him, I learned so much. How to say goodbye mostly which I really needed to know. Thank you, Will, for that lesson and thank you for your candour on all the other personal things you discussed in your book.
But I have to say, I knew you were going to be a big star from the first time I saw you on Fresh Prince of Bel Air. You deserve all the good things that happened for you.

I bought it on Kindle then bought a hard copy for my teen son. It's a great book for young men, who lack a mentor figure who shows emotions, as well a book full of life lessons from a young male perspective. I was never a huge Will fan, though always appreciated his work through my teens (impossible to escape Will Smith as a teen in the late 90's). During recent years, I also appreciated how he puts himself out there as a more conscious type of celebrity. What I loved the most about this is that he is honest about shadowy aspects of himself that can easily make him look really really bad. There were some parts that were too honest that I considered if I were him, would I ever be that honest? Or is it that he's so untouchable financially and in reputation that he can do this? The part where he wants to hurt his father in a wheelchair but doesn't, the part where he doesn't sign the autograph for a fan with a down-syndrome brother, and all those messy relationships with women, not being emotionally present with his wife and children... in his position, many of us could have done the same, yet many readers will be incapable of recognizing that and certainly hate him for those events... yet, Will still wrote those words, and that's what made me appreciate him more. What shows clearly is that there are no black and white in relationships. You can't truly hate every aspect of a person, nor love every aspect of anyone, and the way every relationship was laid out did justice to the full spectrum of life in the most honest lens possible (with inevitable personal bias). Great memoir for those with big dreams, and a certain staple read for young men to learn to heal their emotions on their path to success.

Spoiler alert: unfortunately he doesn’t address the Chris Rock situation in the book. I would have liked to know his thoughts on that.

It is definitely an entertaining read. A bit arrogant in places, but the line between confidence and arrogance is a fine one. He has every right to be confident. Arguably one of the biggest movie stars ever. It’s cool to hear the back story and his journey. I look forward to a wiser, humbler sequel in 20 years.

I already owned the book, finished that in a couple of days, then found out about the audio book which Will has read himself. After watching a small snippet of it on YouTube, decided that this would bring a whole new dimension to the story, which it indeed does. You can hear in his voice the agony and pain in the relationship with his father, the joy and enthusiasm when embarking on a new mission (be it his hiphop career, his first acting gig, the hit series The Fresh Prince of Bel Air or his rise to stardom due to his major blockbuster movies succes).

The 13 CD set holds 16 hours of Will's audio. It was packaged well, but I have to say I'm a bit underwhelmed about the presentation of the set. The discs are packaged in plain white cardboard boxes, there's no inlay and even a simple table of contents seems to be missing. Something I would expect for an item of this price and duration.

Other than that I'm very pleased with this purchase!
