"What Do You Care What Other People Think?": Further Adventures of a Curious Character (Feynman Book 2) Kindle Edition
鶹
The New York Timesbest-selling sequel to"Surely You’re Joking, Mr. Feynman!"
One of the greatest physicists of the twentieth century, Richard Feynman possessed an unquenchable thirst for adventure and an unparalleled ability to tell the stories of his life. "What Do You Care What Other People Think?"is Feynman’s last literary legacy, prepared with his friend and fellow drummer, Ralph Leighton. Among its many tales—some funny, others intensely moving—we meet Feynman’s first wife, Arlene, who taught him of love’s irreducible mystery as she lay dying in a hospital bed while he worked nearby on the atomic bomb at Los Alamos. We are also given a fascinating narrative of the investigation of the space shuttleChallenger’s explosion in 1986, and we relive the moment when Feynman revealed the disaster’s cause by an elegant experiment: dropping a ring of rubber into a glass of cold water and pulling it out, misshapen.

About the authors
Richard P. Feynman was born in 1918 and grew up in Far Rockaway, New York. At the age of seventeen he entered MIT and in 1939 went to Princeton, then to Los Alamos, where he joined in the effort to build the atomic bomb. Following World War II he joined the physics faculty at Cornell, then went on to Caltech in 1951, where he taught until his death in 1988. He shared the Nobel Prize for physics in 1965, and served with distinction on the Shuttle Commission in 1986. A commemorative stamp in his name was issued by the U.S. Postal Service in 2005.
Ralph Leighton (born 13 November 1949) is a biographer, film producer, and friend of the late physicist Richard Feynman. He recorded Feynman relating stories of his life. Leighton has released some of the recordings as The Feynman Tapes. These interviews became the basis for the books Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman! and What Do You Care What Other People Think?, which were later combined into the hardcover anniversary edition Classic Feynman: All the Adventures of a Curious Character. Leighton is an amateur drummer and founder of the group Friends of Tuva. In 1990 he wrote Tuva or Bust! Richard Feynman's Last Journey.

- Reviewed in Canada on January 20, 2021Verified PurchaseEveryone who likes Feynman will already know how good this book is. My only worthwhile comment is that it is fascinating to find he didn't understand Descartes at all. I thought Feynman would appreciate the idea of methodical skepticism, but it turns out he has no method for skepticism. Talk about a paradox in his character.
- Reviewed in Canada on March 22, 2018Verified PurchaseNot only was he very intelligent and a terror, he remains through his writing a great sense of humour, witty, entertaining, and informative, on even the most complex.
- Reviewed in Canada on November 1, 2015Verified PurchaseI don't know whether this star rating applies to the contents or to the condition of the book. Its condition was adequate; its contents are thoroughly engaging. What an utter singularity was Feynman.
- Reviewed in Canada on November 18, 2017Verified PurchaseI purchased this as an audio book. It is fun to listen to. Feynman is a funny and clever guy.
- Reviewed in Canada on November 7, 2010Verified PurchaseAfter reading "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman", I could not wait for this follow-up. Unfortunately, this book scrapes the barrel of Feynman-related adventures and it shows - most stories look like they were rejected for the first book. Though the Challenger disaster investigation events as experienced by Feynman could be a great idea on paper, the "plot" feels stretched a lot, with way too much pointless detail. Unfortunately, this "detective story" fills half of the book. Though Feynman remains a bright and smart man, the book just doesn't appear to reflect that as it did in "Surely"; we sure miss the wits a lot.
- Reviewed in Canada on August 9, 2015Verified PurchaseA great person, with much to learn from. I wish i could have met him. he was determined to get to the root cause of the Challenger failure, just goes to show how gov's and associated depts cover things up.

5.0 out of 5 stars A genius in physics with a great sense of humor.
Verified PurchaseIt seems that you hear Feynman's name here and there all the time although the man has been dead now for awhile. Since my focus in life wasn't physics, I missed out on knowing anything about this brilliant man until I finally decided to read his books and find out for myself who he was and what he discovered. I didn't expect such a humorous guy to pop out of the pages of this book, but he did pop out and not only presented himself to me, but entertained me with his tales enough that I started to feel like I really missed out when I avoided learning physics. Just reading his narrative made me want to know more and as Feynman said you are never finished with learning things. While I suspect Quantum Mechanics is beyond my capabilities, this book gave me a great appreciation for the field and the man. If you read this book, you'll discover a fine sense of humor that existed along with brilliant insights into the universe in this one man. I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Muito interessante!
Verified PurchaseA book that explains some points of Richards’ life, such as, your wife e her illness. I never understood how he worked in Los Alamos in this situation and this book shows this.
Of middle the book ahead there is the Richards’ point of view about the Challenge investigation. Very interesting!
