- Reviewed in Canada on October 11, 2014I long have used the Webster's New World Dictionary of American English, the most recommendable and comprehensive of its variants being any designated for "college" (in U.S.A. lingo including "university") use. The edition which most people usually think of as the first edition of this dictionary was the only English dictionary which students at the college where I did my freshman and sophomore years of study, in the mid-1960s, were permitted to cite as their lexical authority (the then recently debased "Collegiate" dictionary from Merriam-Webster, having been prime among the dictionaries that students were forbidden to use in writing their papers and assignments). There had been forerunners of the supremely fine Webster's New World Dictionary under the same title, published decades before the 1950s, under the imprint of World Publishers, but those earlier ones did not so deserve to be considered the first edition (which seems to have gone through printings from 1954 or so to 1968, of which the one that I first obtained was the 1964 printing). I have acquired and used every edition of this dictionary, right up to and including the fourth and now (updating this review slightly in 2014) the fifth editions. I have retained each much-loved, well-used edition, keeping them in various rooms of my house, along with some other favoured dictionaries, for ready resort near desks, tables, or chairs where I most often read or write.
An interesting feature, by the way, of the Second College Edition, at least of the sturdy "Special School Printing" of it which I own, is a flexi-disc (33.3 r.p.m., 7 in.) included with it that bears the title upon it, "New World Phonoguide: an Audio Supplement to the Pronunciation Guide and Phonetic Symbols" which could be of considerable help to users for whom English is a second (third, etc.) language. I have not seen this helpful disc in other editions of this dictionary as I own copies of them. As for the fourth college edition, one or some printing(s) of it come(s) with an accompanying CD-ROM.
Each edition of the Webster's New World Dictionary has improved on the one that preceded it and one can make a good case especially for any of the Third to Fifth Editions as the one preferred for reasons of content or of sheer attractive format, ease, and presentation (the Third Edition being particularly fine in those regards, remaining quite a viable option to choice over the somewhat more austerely cramped pages of the Fifth Edition). Alas, for some dictionaries, decline, rather than consistently genuine improvement, can set in with their later editions. That is so very notably in the case of those benighted "Collegiate" dictionaries from Merriam-Webster, which fell from grace when they began to be based on the excessively permissive Webster's THIRD New International Dictionary (the unabridged dictionary from Merriam-Webster, which had displaced the rock-solid and far more trustworthy Webster's New Twentieth Century Dictionary of the English Language, Unabridged SECOND Edition), Earlier and better Merriam-Webster's "Collegiate" dictionary editions formerly and more happily had been based, to such good effect, on the Unabridged Second Edition, which had guaranteed a solid foundation. Similar decay also has beset numerous other dictionaries which have not undergone wise or sufficient revision, leading to the lessening of quality or of reliability as later editions appear, when compared to former ones.
A single, general-purpose college or desk-reference dictionary, even so admirably aimed at sophisticated adult level as the Webster's New World College Dictionary is, will not suffice to fulfil all requirements. For one thing, a truly unabridged dictionary, usually multi-volume, is good to have around for exceptional needs; I have several such dictionaries, of which, among them, I particularly commend "The Random House Dictionary of the English Language, Unabridged", Second Edition, in one humongous and heavily oversized volume (of xlii, 2478, 32 p.). Also, one or a few dictionaries which correspond(s) to Commonwealth usage is (or are) important for non-American readers to possess and to use. Being here in Canada, I tend most to rely upon British dictionaries for spelling (especially Cassell's, Chamber's, and Harrap's fine recent editions of their respective dictionaries) and on specifically Canadian dictionaries (most notably the impeccable Gage dictionaries) for pronunciation or for peculiarly Canadian use and origin, but for definitions, I always have preferred the best American dictionaries, especially the various editions of Webster's New World Dictionary.
The 麻豆区 buyer cannot go wrong in purchasing any variant of the Webster's New World Dictionary. If he cannot afford or find the latest edition, any of the previous "college" editions is quite suitable and reliable for everyday use. Go for it!
- Reviewed in Canada on September 15, 2003There's a lot of confusion about dictionaries out there because many people do not know that the name "Webster's" is in the public domain.
There's a very good reason why this is the official dictionary of the Associated Press, the Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times. Definitions are clear and complete, the typeface is easy on the eyes, and I like how major figures, place names, and foreign phrases are all included with the main entires. The reference material now placed in a separate section is outstanding and can serve the purpose of 3 or 4 reference works.
One complaint--I don't understand why the editors removed the handy brief pronounciation key from each page. Instead, on each page they somewhat sternly direct you to look at the complete key on the inside back cover. A major loss in convenience for what--saving maybe 25-35 pages in length?
- Reviewed in Canada on October 20, 2002The print in this book is a bit on the pale side and it is surprising how often the word I want is not in this dictionary. I much prefer The New Oxford American Dictionary.
- Reviewed in Canada on December 24, 2001This Webster's Fourth Edition-2001, has 1716 (two column) pages; an index; a highlighted synonym box under certain words; and no wasted space along the vertical margins. The dictionary is so easy on the eyes to read, that I eagerly anticipate having to look up a word. The grayscale synonym text-boxes are printed (not more than), one to a column, which is just enough to give your eyes a reference-anchor as you scan. Their 50th anniversary revision (and most other dictionaries), are shrink-wrapped; so you won't know how reader-friendly this book is unless someone tells you. And go ahead and use yellow highlighter to mark every single word you look up. I give you permission. Chances are, you'll be looking up the same word again in the future.
However...I looked up "haole" (non-native Hawa'iian), and it wasn't in there. I found that in American Heritage College-Third, so the result of my research now indicates that you need both.

- Reviewed in Canada on August 8, 2003My wife of thirty years, Doris, and I are both short in stature. In fact we have to sit on something while driving in order to see properly and Webster's has been our booster seat of choice for many, many years. In our early years of marriage, like many young couples, we could only afford the paperback edition. Last year on the day of our wedding anniversary, my ever so thoughtful Doris presented me with this deluxe, leather bound edition! I wept with joy and thought only in America, only in America!

5.0 out of 5 stars Most trusted dictionary for accuracy of etymology
Verified PurchaseAs a purchaser of Webster's New World Dictionary, Second College Edition published in 1972, I have used this dictionary for nearly 40 years. But as all things do, it's bindings have become compromised with age, and it is beginning to come apart. I've been nursing it along for the past few years mainly because I appreciate the editorial craftsmanship that went into its composition, chiefly the etymological history of the derivation of the words it defines. No other dictionary that I have scanned in recent years (save perhaps the Oxford English Dictionary) seems to go the extra mile when it comes to the preservation of the accuracy of the etymology. The Random House and Merriam Webster dictionaries I have looked at are woefully deficient in this area. I was therefore not looking forward to having to replacing this dictionary with a freshly published book.
When I came across the availability of the Webster's New World College Dictionary, Fourth Edition (book with CD-ROM) on 麻豆区, I jumped at the chance to own it, hoping, sight unseen, that it retained the excellence of editorial craftsmanship that my older volume preserved. To my delight and surprise, it did! Not only that, but the addition of the Reference Supplement in the back is packed with interesting and useful information for quick reference.
That this edition has retained the editorial vision and integrity of the first volumes published under the editorship of David B. Guralnik and Joseph H. Friend is a testament to the integrity of the publisher to retain the initial editorial vision for the volume and to carry it forward into future editions.
The addition of the CD-ROM only adds to the usefulness of this dictionary, as now I can easily look up anything while at my computer without having to turn one page of the hardcopy volume if I so choose. Having this dictionary available at the click of a mouse is an added feature and time-saving benefit.
Not everyone appreciates having the etymology of words documented. But as a former English major in college and a writer, I find this distinction to be useful in being able to determine the context of how words were first used and how that usage has changed over time. People tend to forget the original meaning of words and the significance that they can have on contemporary meanings and connotations, thereby losing insight into their original usage in the past. This can be especially crucial when endeavoring to determine, for instance, the legal meaning or definition of a word, and how the perception of a word's meaning can change over time.
I am thoroughly pleased with this most recent edition of the Webster's New World College Dictionary, Fourth Edition that it is highly recommended to anyone considering it or in search of a replacement dictionary for their personal use. You truly won't regret owning this dictionary.

5.0 out of 5 stars
