I bought a battery locally and am impressed with the run time when the power is out. If you have extended power outages buy the largest battery that will fit the supplied battery case.
The audible alarms are useful but not very loud.
Overall, an impressive unit that is worth every penny.
- Reviewed in Canada on June 8, 2024Style: WSS30V combination sump pump systemPattern Name: PumpVerified PurchaseI decided to get this sump pump one night when it was raining heavy and my current pump was running every 4-5 minutes. (I could hear it from the basement) It was 10 pm and I wondered to myself, ‘what would I do right now if the pump quit at this moment or the power went out?’ I don’t know the age of my old pump as it came with the house when I bought it a few years ago. So I decided to research sump pumps and after reading reviews from customers and professionals, I decided to get this one. It was more expensive than others, but the cost, and headache, of repairing a water damaged basement is so much more. Install was easy. The only thing you have to know, is that they don’t tighten and screws or nuts on the supplied backflow valve. So be sure to check those. Mine was leaking initially until I tightened them up. The unit is amazingly quiet. Even standing over it while it is running, it’s hard to hear it. Other than the sound of water as it’s being pumped through the pipes. I really like having the battery powered backup pump. Sets my mind at ease now when it’s raining, not worrying about a power outage or main pump failure. That alone is worth the price.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 30, 2024Style: WSS30V combination sump pump systemPattern Name: PumpVerified PurchaseI’ve had this for 2 yrs now, after my basement flooded when my other pump failed. It has been so quiet and so reliable. I put 2 water sensors next to it, but zero problems. I will buy another just for backup, but this is one of the best products I have bought. Came back here after 2 yrs because I had to tell my story. If you’re thinking of buying it, do it. You won’t regret it.

I bought my battery from a local Battery Experts location good service. the battery is good for 6hrs of continuous run time. not cheap either!
The battery alarm is loud so I will need to silence this as it is in a "bedroom". only now the alarm is loud because I was testing it when it was installed. It would be nice if they had a feature to either turn the alarm volume down or silence it if you wanted this feature.

The primary pump is very powerful and quiet. Have had no reason to use the battery operated back up pump. Upon installation, a problem with the battery box controller occured. The self test failed, blew the 20amp fuse. The company was contacted and a replacement controller was ordered. After the company got my address and name spelled correctly, the controller arrived and was installed. The self test worked. The big test will be when the hydro (electricity) fails.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice setup that's at a nice price.
Style: ESP25 battery backup system (upgraded version)Pattern Name: PumpVerified PurchaseEasy to setup, wire-up, and get into place. Was a little-bit of a tight fit with both pumps in my pit, but they fit together facing opposite directions. These pumps are quiet, fast, and after 3 months, reliable. Battery backup has been tested a few times manually, and still seems to work well. I'm very comfortable with the setup. It took about 20-30 minutes total to setup with a Y-joint pipe and check valve cutting a new pipe to join the two, and I zip-tied the float to the pipe and tested with a water pour to be sure it wouldn't snag or hesitate. The battery I used was Casil 100 AH Deep Cycle AGM CA121000 SLA Solar/RV battery for $185, which got top ratings and matched the terminal requirements. I Mated this kit to a Wayne CDU980E 3/4 HP pump using the PumpSpy Dual Pump Install Kit and a Raybend,"Silent" Sump Pump Check Valve, 1-1/2" that I had installed prior to hooking up the backup pump kit. Altogether, I spent about $820-$850, which is much less than the $1800 I was priced for a 1/2, 1/3 HP kit by a local plumber. Between the two pump installs, drilling and mods, and running 3 more drain lines that were never installed originally (Heater, tank, A/C condensation, and Humidifier) it took me about 60-70 minutes for all of the work, testing, and cable dressing. At $860 - $1000/hr for after-tax labor, it was well-worth my time, and surprisingly very easy to do. I may add pics later, if I have the time.
Don't bother with the unsealed batteries, and the Li-ion's aren't worth the price, especially, as they cold pose a fire hazard in the humid environment you'll be using them in - unless you know the maker well and can trust the quality of the sealed system - especially since this charging system doesn't have the electronics to protect against surges or overcharging of Li-ion batteries. This system shouldn't go through enough cycles to make it worthwhile anyway. In fact, with the reliable power I have at my house, I really only need a standard 12V car or lawn-tractor battery, but it's worth the comfort of knowing this will last and have the capacity if the power goes out for awhile.

5.0 out of 5 stars Water pumping when you need it, if it will fit!
Style: WSS30V combination sump pump systemPattern Name: PumpVerified PurchaseOur basement must have been built in the path of an underground stream. After a big rain, water will continue to come into the sump for several days after the end of the rain. Basement flooding is a certainty if the sump pump isn't working. So AC power, or no AC power the sump pump must continue to run!
The AC-powered pump component is typical of good quality flooded pumps, powerful and quiet. But it is the DC-powered backup pump that sets this unit apart. We've had other DC-powered backup pumps, but they typically fell short. We have about a 7-foot lift between the top of the sump and the ground surface where the water is discharged. The other backup pumps would run, but strain to remove the water. Not so this pump. The backup pump design is very similar to the primary AC-powered pump and takes only about 30 seconds to empty an 18" round 30" deep sump against that 7-foot (minimum) head. In a recent test following a 4" rainfall event, the backup pump was needing to empty the sump about every 3 minutes during the peak drainage. It ran on battery power (admittedly off a 100-amp-hour AGM battery) all day and through the night without any visible drop in the battery voltage until there was no more water to be pumped.
With one caveat, installation is easy, primarily because the plumbing interconnecting the two pump units is built-in. The caveat is that the base of the unit is massive, with the two pumps mounted side-by-side (instead of vertically as many of the lighter-duty units are). We have an 18" circular sump and it just barely fit - in part because while 18" was ample for the center of the unit, the corners just barely fit.
We did make one alteration. We are charging our battery using a high quality, stand-alone charger. Why? The main limitation on battery life is likely to be how it is charged (or, if things don't go right, overcharged). The built-in charger may be OK, but given the cost of the battery, we thought investment in a computerized low-amperage charger was a reasonable one. The good news is that the pump control electronics built into the battery box work fine with the AC charger cable detached. The charger type makes no difference when the backup sump pump is actually running, because, by definition, the AC power will be off at that point anyway.
Given its solid design and construction, and that it seems to do the needed pumping with little evidence of effort, I'm expecting this unit to keep us dry for many years .

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Back-Up Pump
Style: ESP25 battery backup system (upgraded version)Pattern Name: PumpVerified PurchaseAfter research, this was our choice for a back-up pump to our Zoeller M53 main pump and, after installation and use, we are happy with it and recommend it.
For back-up pumps, it looks like there are 4 choices:
- This Wayne pump WSB1275
- PumpSpy PS2000
- Cheaper, low flow back-ups
- Local pumps (eg, Trusty Warns) sold by plumbing companies, costing ~$1400
The local pump option was too spendy and there's no logic in buying a back-up pump that is tiny and has low output - the flow rate from the back-up should be similar to the main pump - if the power goes out and the back-up kicks in, it would be a travesty if it can't keep up and water flows out of the bucket.
The PumpSpy is a larger pump with higher than typical flow rate (eg, 2400 gph @ 10' head) and it connects to WiFi to and will send an e-mail when it engages. The Wayne pump flow rate (1680 gph @ 10' head) is similar to our good Zoeller M53 pump (2000 gph @ 10' head) but doesn't connect to Wifi. Getting an e-mail when the pump kicks in would be nice but it's not that important to us. And, the over $200 difference between those two pumps is in Wayne's favor.
Some things about this Wayne WSB1275 pump:
- The float is not attached to the pump and this independence allows for the float to be installed at the right elevation. The pump is on a cord that connects to the controller.
- When the float activates the pump, the pump runs for 20 seconds then shuts off. So, the float needs to be installed high enough so the pump runs for about 20 seconds to prevent the pump from running dry. This takes some finagling and trial/error to figure out. Also, it's nice to be able to position the float away from anything it could get stuck on, like the ribbed plastic sump basket or the other pump.
- The alarm isn't overly loud and only engages for about 2 seconds when the pump starts. I saw another review where the person said the alarm was too loud. I think it's too quiet and that it should run longer. We can hear it upstairs, just if the furnace fan is running it can drowned out.
- I had a large marine battery from my former custom system and was able to use that with this, so that was nice.
Overall, I really like it. The pump is solid, the float works well, and it's simple in a nice way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peace of Mind
Style: WSS30V combination sump pump systemPattern Name: PumpVerified PurchaseThe unit installed quickly and easily. Everything, besides the pipe, is included for the install. Being a Wayne pump the quality is very high. The 1/2 hp AC main pump moves a lot of water quickly. The powerful motor would have no problem lifting water up a long rise. The pump is nearly whisper quiet and check valve is quiet as well. One thing to note, the DC backup pump activates with a switch, but runs for a set time instead of turning off when the pit empties.
As some have mentioned, using a different battery charger/maintainer is advised. I contacted Wayne directly and they recommend only sealed batteries to be used with the charger since the charger is always in charge mode. This may boil away all the acid in regular unsealed batteries and shorten the lifespan. One could theoretically constantly monitor the battery solution and top off as necessary, but this seems like an easy thing to forget and ruin a battery. Given the relative inexpensive nature of a good battery charger/maintainer this seems like a no brainer.
While not cheap, the unit gives a homeowner great peace of mind for when we are out of town and not able to start a generator if power is lost.

3.0 out of 5 stars Worked when I needed it most. UPDATE: charger failure, no warranty response
Style: WSS30V combination sump pump systemPattern Name: PumpVerified PurchaseUPDATE: In the original review (below), I said the electronics were a weak spot. This turned out to be true when the charger failed about 6 months in. I tried to contact them through their website to obtain a warranty replacement, but received no response even more than a month later. So I am reducing the my rating from 4 stars (original) to 3 stars for premature failure of the charging system and the lack of any kind of responsiveness.
In the interim, I took my motorcycle battery tender and hooked it up to charge the backup battery. It worked great, though it took longer to top off the backup battery as it has a fairly low output compared with the supplied charger. But it did the trick.
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
This is for the combination unit with 12-v backup.
TL;DR - This is perfect for replacing a single AC pump to add a backup. Installation was very easy and its performance was great when I needed it most. The charging electronics and indicator lights are a weak point, however.
First, let me address a couple issues highlighted in other reviews.
1) There are directions for testing the battery condition in the manual. You need to unplug the unit then press the test button to run the 12-v pump and test the battery under load. While plugged in, the charge status lights are virtually useless (as described below and the reason for the 4-start, rather than 5-star rating). But the testing process does work and will show a partially discharged battery under load.
2) Check valve - The instructions require a check valve. The unit does come with valves at the base of each pump, but these are not intended as a replacement for a standard check valve in the discharge line. I believe they are simply to prevent the main pump from pumping water backward through the backup pump, and vice-versa.
3) Pumps dead on arrival - mine were fine, but given a couple reports fo DOA pumps, I tested mine in the bathtub before installing. Pro tip: hold a bucket 6 or 8 inches above the discharge tube when testing. Don't ask me how I know this.
4) Airlock - I had no problems in either bathtub testing or after installation. Your mileage may vary based on the installation.
5) The charging system - I have no way to directly test the adequacy of the charging system, but the status lights are useless during charging. I have a battery tender for my motorcycle and that inexpensive device has far more informative lights which show fast charge, slow charge and maintenance. The light on this unit just glows green whenever it is plugged in, as best I can tell, regardless of the charging state. I ran the battery down to yellow during a protracted power outage, and when the power was restored the battery status light just glowed green. No indication that it was actively charging or just in maintenance trickle charge. Once life settles down, I will probably just buy a battery tender and hook it up in place of the supplied charger. I trust it more and it tells me what's going on.
OK, now to my review:
I bought this to replace a single pump in a 16" pit. This was a perfect unit for the purpose. Installation was super easy. It has a single discharge tube, which I easily retrofitted to the existing discharge tube (with check valve) from the original single pump. The unit fit in the 16" pit, but with not much room to spare. I'm glad I had an inch or to to maneuver the unit to position the discharge pipe. The unit looks and feels sturdy AF. It inspired confidence and didn't feel the least bit flimsy.
The main AC pump is remarkably quiet and we had no issues in the short time we had power. Shortly after installation, we lost power for 3 weeks due to an electrical fire in the house. The backup pump performed admirably. Our sump pumps only run every few hours under normal circumstances, so there was not a huge load on the pump, be we had two large rainstorms and one heavy snow melt that tested the limits and the 12-v backup performed flawlessly. YMMV, depending on pump demand. Our sump is in an 8-ft basement pumping to ground level.
Let's talk a little about the floats. The units come with pre-installed, fixed, non-adjustable floats to turn on and off each pump. Personally, the floats on the main pump were much better suited to our needs than the floats on the one we replaced, but there is no way to adjust the float level, other than to raise or lower the pump assembly by adding or removing bricks from the sump pit. The float on the main pump has separate "on" and "off" levels, which makes perfect sense. It waits until the water raises to a certain level, then runs until it falls to a certain level. The float on the 12-v backup, on the on the other hand, works differently. It is a single "on" float, but the unit runs an additional 10-15 seconds to avoid frequent on-off cycles. In my sump, this results in the pump sucking air for the last 5 seconds or so of the cycle. Not sure why they didn't include a similar float as the AC unit.
The good news on the 12-v float is that it is set to turn on at a higher level than the main AC float. So if the main pump fails for any reason (power, mechanical failure, air lock, whatever), the backup will take over when the water level reaches a higher level. This make the 12-v backup a true backup for any failure, not just electrical failure.
I'll post a separate review of the Mighty Max battery, but it is getting 5 stars. It arrived fully charged (as best I can tell due to the useless charging lights on the pump unit), it easily fit in the battery box, and it went 3 weeks under modest load conditions before the status light on the unit went to yellow (again, whatever that mean given the weaknesses already described for the charging electronics). No idea how much more juice it had left in it, but it was a stellar performer for the 3 weeks we were without power.

In summary, this is an incredibly easy replacement if you want to add 12-v backup to an existing AC only pump. The 12-v battery charging electronics and indicators lights are suspect to useless, but easily remedied by substituting a $20-30 battery tender.
