A collection of women's sexual fantasies from women around the world, Want is a revelatory, sensational and game-changing exploration of women's sexuality that asks, and answers: How do women feel about sex when they have the freedom to be totally anonymous?
What do you want when no one is watching?
Who do you fantasize about when the lights are off?
When you think about sex, what do you really want?
When we talk about sex, we talk about womanhood and motherhood, infidelity and exploitation, consent and respect, fairness and egalitarianism, love and hate, pleasure and pain. And yet so many of us don't talk about it at all.
In this groundbreaking book, Gillian Anderson collects and introduces the anonymous sexual fantasies of hundreds of women from around the world (along with her own anonymous fantasy). The fantasies are extraordinary: they are full of desire, fear, intimacy, shame, satisfaction and, ultimately, liberation. From fantasising about someone off-limits to conjuring a scene with multiple partners, from sex that is gentle and tender to passionate and playful, from women who have never had sex to women who have had more sex than they can remember, these letters provide a window into the most secret part of our minds.
Want reveals how women feel about sex when they have the freedom to be totally themselves.

Product description
Review
“Want is illuminating not just about women’s inner desires, but also about how they might fold these fantasies into their wider lives. For that reason, the book isn’t just about sex; it’s a brilliant, full-bodied account of womanhood.”
—Irish Independent
“Want makes for addictive reading.”
—The Guardian
“An apt title, as so many of the fantasies are rooted in being desired, hungered for, catered to and pleasured in ways that are presumably lacking in the letter writers’ lives. . . . There is plenty of humor, light and spark in this book.”
—The Washington Post
“[Anderson’s] prose is clear, sensitive and funny. . . . Filthy or forlorn, these fantasies are intensely personal, but this book demonstrates that they are inevitably shaped by society too. As such, the demographic details accompanying each anonymous contribution offer fascinating context. . . . In a world that still expends so much energy limiting women’s experience, the unanalysed and largely unedited fantasies in Want are undeniably galvanising. Emboldened by their peculiar universality, hopefully readers will feel less reluctant to share their own.”
—iNews
“An addictive and compelling read.”
—Woman and Home
“Want is an intriguing cabinet of curiosities showcasing the sheer glorious variety of female desire.”
—The Guardian
“Extraordinary. . . . Far from being irrelevant to a sexually liberated age, [Want] feels deeply pertinent.”
—Lisa Hilton via Daily Mail

90% bisexual/pansexual
Huge Gillian Anderson fan. Pre-ordered this as her IG promoted it as a book for women. But the book is hugely bisexual/pansexual which I don’t feel is representative of the population. Pretty disappointed as I was pretty excited for this.

- Reviewed in Canada on November 18, 2024Verified PurchaseSaw Gillian Anderson discuss her inspiration and concept of the book on Colbert. My curiosity was peaked. Bought it and really enjoyed it! Recommend it for sure!
- Reviewed in Canada on December 26, 2024Verified PurchaseIt lacks depth. It's more like a catalog of fantasies because it is not descriptive
- Reviewed in Canada on April 7, 2025Verified PurchaseBoring and repetitive
- Reviewed in Canada on November 19, 2024I picked this book at the book store and immediately felt disappointed that this is copy, rip off of Nancy Fridays "My Secret Garden" written in 1973.
There is borrowing, paying homage and then there is just taking other peoples ideas and hoping no one notices.
If you are genuinely interested in this kind of sexual fantasy arena, get Nancy Fridays book and really think about that it was written and published in 1973!
- Reviewed in Canada on November 25, 2024I adore Gillian Anderson and this mash up of what women really want is just so interesting to listen to
- Reviewed in Canada on September 20, 2024Verified PurchaseI preordered this book thinking it would be an interesting read, but it didn't resonate with me...wordy and scattered. The majority of submissions seemed to be from transsexuals, nonbinary, and pansexuals...which is noted on each submission, and would suggest these represent 95% of women, which I don't believe is the case. Not what I anticipated, and not an enjoyable read. Disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Modern women's fantasy book
Verified PurchaseI like reading about other people's fantasies. I thought it was good and it had a lot of different types of fantasies in it. I like watching Gillian Anderson on Sex Education too. It's a fun show

2.0 out of 5 stars Modernist and clickbaity
Verified PurchaseVery underwhelming in general, but specifically a) obviously pandering to the usual suspects to the point some letters are literal nonsense and you WILL skip them after reading 3 lined. b) if youre a dude like me thinking it might have some secret knowledge it absolutely does not, its all dull and normie. There is one story that is almost sci fi, and that one is pretty cool.. but thats about it. Evidently the majority of these were sent by the least sexual persons out there and it shows, but Im hoping that was kind of the point. Noble idea but its super boring and most reviews dont mention how much silly gender is a spectrum social studies buzz words are filling the many many many pages and it goes nowhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Importantto read for woman and man too
Verified PurchaseI think this book should be read by every woman and man. As a woman, so that you know that you are not alone in your thoughts. In fact, there are women who have even wilder desires than yours. And as a man, read it to be aware that women also desire sex and they also have desiresserious.

4.0 out of 5 stars Read this I think you should
Verified PurchaseSurprised by the description and honesty of the readers. I learned a few things beyond being a little creepy at the start, tough read for a man but it's all about communication right.what the girls don't say.
