Product description

Noirish shadows spread across the frontier in this landmark western, the first of the celebrated collaborations between director Anthony Mann and actor James Stewart that redefined the genre with their moral and psychological intensity. Beginning his midcareer transition into increasingly edgy roles, Stewart portrays an avenging sharpshooter whose stolen rifle becomes a harbinger of death as it is passed from one doomed hand to the next. Featuring a stellar cast that includes a touching Shelley Winters, a sensationally sleazy Dan Duryea, and a pre-stardom Rock Hudson, this elemental tale of violence begetting violence broke new ground with its evocation of the West as a no-man’s-land of antiheroes and villains. 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES • New 4K digital restoration, undertaken by Universal Pictures in collaboration with The Film Foundation, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack • One 4K UHD disc of the film and one Blu-ray with the film and special features • Audio commentary featuring actor James Stewart and film historian Paul Lindenschmidt • New interview with film programmer Adam Piron on the portrayal of Native Americans in the western genre • Lux Radio Theatre adaptation of the film from 1951 • Trailer • English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing • PLUS: An essay by critic Imogen Sara Smith

The movie itself is easily 5 Stars, but there is a flaw in the master copy. The movie freeze frames and stops and jumps a couple of seconds. I've viewed 2 copies. And they both had the exact defect. The film was viewed on an OPPO 4K player. So most assuredly it isn't the player.

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterful Anthony Mann-directed Western with a masterful 4K transfer

One knows for the most part what they can expect, as a consumer, when it comes to the quality of The Criterion Collection. Winchester '73 is the first classic Western collaboration between actor Jimmy Stewart and director Anthony Mann. It was shot in glorious B&W. The 4K transfer is one of the best I have seen among classic Westerns. The rest of the Mann/Stewart Western collaborations were shot in color, so this one is unique, and it is my favorite Anthony Mann film. It also happens to be one of my favorites of the genre. I was so glad to find out Criterion was releasing this. Thank you.

Great Western and beautifully restored in 4k and the soundtrack has the voices nice and clear. Pick one up while they're still available new for a great price. Tony Curtis has a small role and is listed as Anthony Curtis, and check out who played the Indian Chief I had no clue it was him?

5.0 out of 5 stars Winchester '73 (1950) Hits the Mark on Blu-Ray.

The Criterion Collection finally releases on Blu-ray this long overdue Western classic from 1950 directed by Anthony Mann and starring James Stewart as sharpshooter Lin McAdam who on July 4th, 1876, wins a perfect and brand new Winchester '73 rifle that is stolen by "Dutch" Henry Brown (played by Stephen McNally) whom Lin was already pursuing for personal reasons, and must track down that rifle as it passes through the hands of a series of doomed persons.

Looking superb in a 4K restoration, a massive upgrade from the Universal Studios DVD from 2003, porting over those extras and now including two featurettes about the portrayal of Native Americans, and about the director at the studio. Plus, a radio adaptation and the expected insert booklet Criterion always includes.

Superb film with a fine story, direction, and characters; above average western.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Movie and Restoration

Criterion knocked it out of the park on this movie. The movie itself is a classic western masterpiece. Jimmy Stewart is at his best in this one. Supporting cast is really, really good also. See IMDb for more movie details.
If you like classic westerns like me, this is a must buy even at this price. So worth it.

The picture quality on this new restoration is amazing. You can tell great care was given during the restoration process. Just the right amount of “grain” throughout the picture. Audio is very nice also. Very few black and white classic movies look as good as this one.
