Great coffee ! Professional feel
I would say first class espresso and latte, second try is a success, you will need a bit of experience, fine 18g, taper well, pre infusion, do everything same as high end machines and you will be fine, nice crema and great taste. Third try even better 18g and 60ml boiling water could not be better! (First try was a complete flop but third one is a success) also easy to clean put every under water that’s it. This is definitely a pro level barista equipment.

So I bought this thing because I fell in love with the idea of making espresso outside, in nature!

However, I wish I just got a thermos or an Aeropress.

Using this espresso maker involves a lot of steps, and needs a good amount of clear space.
there is the tamper, the tamper ring, the porta filter, the showerscreen, the distrubution, you'll need hot water, something to clean it after, your beans or grinds....

I'd recommend that you carry a piece of cloth to put everything on, and be careful so you don't drop it on the dirty ground.

after all that, you need to preheat the picopress, prepare your puck and what not. this process is not hard on a table or near a sink, although there can be spills, but in nature or a park, it's very annoying.

After your shot, you need to figure out where to put the thing, and after you're done, you need to clean it, which involves rinsing every part (with cold water) and then drying it, unless yu want to put it back together moist (Not sure if that's a good idea or not)

As you see, it's just... to involved, so ask yourself, do you really need Espresso THAT bad? If this brings you joy then sure, but a pourover or aeropress is so much neater and easier.

also I tried using a thermos and even after 30m-1h of walking, the water was near 85c which with pre-heating, gave me very mediocre lukewarm Espresso (although it was super windy)

additionally, I made the mistake of pushing the pump too hard as I felt resistance, and this thing leaked all over me, I had to walk back home covered in Espresso. II also think I didn't tighten the group head enough.

I'd remove half a star because the bottom shower screen cover fell during brewing once and it caused a mess.

I also really encourage a thorough clean as my espresso smelled and tasted like chemicals after just rinsing it a bit.

    So consider this:
    - You can pretty much only use darker roasts or medium-dark roasts for decent espresso
    - You highly benefit from boiling water, a Thermos CAN work, but it'll be a pain and not super enjoyable IMO.
    - All the cleaning and prep involved, you absolutely need a proper table

so this is more for proper camping, where you can use a butane kettle, or for travelling and making espresso at a hotel or work or someone's house. I'd not recommend this for casual coffee.

I still gave it 5 stars because technically, It was me getting caught up in the idea of making espresso outside without doing a reality check, and it seems like a very well-built product!

Also, since this is not a pressurized basket (I wish they let you choose!) you need a portable hand grinder, I just ground my coffee at home since I was only taking a 1h walk.

After 6 months of use I'm confident that the Picopresso has to be the greatest portable espresso makers out there. I don't usually write reviews, but this product deserves one. I bought this in June for use in my camper and I now use it to make my daily coffee at home as well.

The build quality of the Picopresso is fantastic. The actual reservoir/pump and it's lid are the only plastic pieces (thankfully, otherwise it would be very hot to hold). The remainder of the pieces - dosing funnel, tamper, basket, basket holder, shower screen are all made of machined aluminum and precision engineered to fit into a tiny, beautiful, portable package. The design is impeccable and all parts fit together into a carry case not much larger than a Coke can. I use it inconjuction with a few other accessories - a scale, WDT tool, tamping mat, etc. - and carry it all, along with my coffee beans and grinder, in a small tupperware bin the size of a shoe box. The included photo shows all of the individual parts of the Picopresso (plus the scale, pot/stove, and grinder that I use when camping - not included).

I will say that the process to make an espresso shot may not be for everybody. It definitely requires a routine to boil water, grind beans, prepare your espresso puck, and brew. It takes about 10 minutes all said and done to hand grind and brew a double shot of espresso, then clean the device. With an electric burr grinder and kettle, the process is definitely simplified and does not take much longer than a traditional espresso machine. I much prefer the cleanup with this device as opposed to a french press, Aeropress, or drip coffee brewer. Only the shower screen, basket and basket holder touch the espresso and they all screw off the bottom to be rinsed easily.

Like any espresso machine, the Pico is finicky in regard to the grind size of the coffee you put into it. If you do not own (or intend to own) a capable burr grinder, then I would look at an alternative device. If your coffee is too course you will end up with dilute bean water, and if too fine, you will not be able to pump any water through the device. However, I paired mine with a simple, $150 hand grinder (VSSL Java) and have had great results. Super rich, creamy espresso shots without the need for an expensive and bulky countertop unit.

For us milk coffee drinkers, obviously a huge drawback to a device like this is that there is no milk steaming. I will usually make an americano with milk, or an iced coffee, but I sometimes bring a countertop milk frother with me if a cappucino or latte is desired - a non-issue for me, but worth considering.

Overall, I'd highly recommend this to anyone who appreciates a cafe-quality espresso and is willing to spend a few minutes each morning on their coffee rountine. I would amplify this recommendation for those who need something portable for camping, travel, at work, or living in a small space, and would also recommend the Pico to anyone who is eager to learn, experiment and have fun with the science of espresso as it's a great starting point and produces amazing coffees!

I bought this to make espresso while camping. I have a decent hand grinder, and the first shot was already above average. I believe a few more trials will get the correct grind size and even more crema. It makes excellent espresso as I expected.

I'm liking it overall. I wanted a single-cup espresso maker at my office desk that didn't need a plug or take up any space. And I got what I asked for. And it makes good espresso, so all great there.

But cleaning it properly requires it to be disassembled, which is easy enough, but there are probably 12 different pieces. All washers, filters, rings, etc. It's like I'm disassembling a rifle. Or building a Lego set.

So the time you save making the espresso at your desk, you're just spending cleaning the thing. But if that doesn't bother you, it's pretty good.

Piston kinda squeaks when used, as well. Not enough to be annoying, but noticeable.

Amazing little pespresso device. If you know how to use it you will definitely love it. This is a professional coffee machine and not like others. Suitable to use at home or outside and thanks for the compact size.

Recommended to have a professional grinder either manual or electric. Cheap grinders will not do the job for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best portable espresso device - Ever
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 22, 2022
    Verified Purchase
The Picopresso is absolute genius and the closest I can get to a portable device that delivers barista quality espresso. I own multiple portable espresso devices and this one leaves them all standing. I also have a pretty hefty espresso setup at home (yes I know a bit sad) and I therefore have high expectations when it comes to my daily shot or two. The Picopresso if used correctly can deliver trully exceptional results. When my home machine went in for its service a few weeks ago I used the Picopresso every day and was more than happy.

However ,there are a few howevers. You need a good quality espresso grinder for your (fresh - dark/espresso roast) beans and preferably some scales so that you use the same amount of grind every time. I use approx 15g. You can go up to 18g but thats a matter of taste. Properly tamp the beans with the funnel removed from the basket. Ideally replace the supplied basket with a 51mm full size basket (La Pavoni Europiccola baskets fit) - but only if you are as fussy as me.

Most importantly pre-heat every element before you make your coffee otherwise the results are going to be lukewarm. Avoid getting water inside the plunger. There's some great youtube videos out there.

It's a bit of a faff when you start but well worth it once you get used to it. I regularly take mine to work with my coffee pre-ground.
