    This trap does not work very well, for a pretty clear reason. In order for this type of trap to work well, there should be no light coming in around the trap, except that bit of light at the end that lures the victim deep into the trap.

    The Bit Flat Top 'protective' flap is so large that it when you put this into a gopher hole, and try to seal around the trap, you get dirt onto the Big Flap. Stuff it into the hole well, and the flap may likely be prevented from even popping up when the trap is triggered. The first two times we placed this, the gopher stuffed dirt into the hole without being trapped.

    OK, now that we realize why, we can use leaves around the end of the trap with the flap, with just a little dirt on them, so that the trap is not obstructed from springing. Hopefully that will work. From a design perspective, the top flap should have been minimized so that it stops light (so the critters go deep into the trap) but is not easily obstructed from allowing the trap to spring when the trap is stuffed into a hold at an angle, like it will be used.

    A little design modifications and this could been a great trap. As it is, I don't think it was field-tested. As long as you know its shortcomings you can carefully work around them. I just set it again noting the above and can follow up.

    Trying to control Richardsons Ground Squirrels (aka gophers/prairie dogs) in Saskatchewan. Had bought much more expensive (and terrifying) traps that likely were meant more for “real” moles and didn’t work (seems important to know exactly what animal you are trying to trap and not get confused by local slang names for the various ground critters when choosing traps). These traps are inexpensive, super easy to set and to remove dead trapped animals. Bought 2 traps and caught 2 gophers within 30min of setting them out. Didn’t even have to further dig up my yard, just watched for active holes and nestled the trap tightly over the entrance. Third animal caught the second day. We will see if the trend continues. Only downside is the trap doesn’t always kill the animal instantly. While I’d like to eliminate them I’m not keen on having them suffer in the process and don’t love having to dispatch them myself either :( Overall, effective, inexpensive and easy to use product that would be improved by being 100% instant kill.

    The old model 0625 is nearly bulletproof, simple to use, and reliable. I ran over one of my 0625 traps with an 8 hp rototiller, which is about the only way to break one, and so I thought I'd try the newfangled one as a replacement.

    They've taken a proven design and turned it into a faulty contraption that doesn't work, is more dangerous, and is likely to be far less reliable.

    The first time I tested the new 0626 trap I successfully armed it by pushing down on the top cover. I touched the trigger paddle with my fingers, and it tripped successfully. But then the trigger paddle fell out of the assembly, and I can't figure out how to put it back in.

    I tried for about 20 minutes before giving up. During that time I was able to successfully arm the trap, but since the trigger paddle wasn't in its proper place, there was no safe way to disarm the trap. On the old 0625 design it's always obvious which parts move and which parts are dangerous, so it's trivial to disarm the trap by holding down the kill bar and swinging the trigger wire out of the way.

    With this new design armed, but with no trigger paddle inserted, I had to resort to poking all over the place with a wooden stick, hoping to find the secret trigger points. I finally tripped it and disarmed it, but it was a bit scary.

    Furthermore, the old 0625 design is built of a really tough plastic that feels indestructible. It's not exactly soft or pliable, but it's not completely rigid. It feels like the sidewall of a truck tire. Nothing short of a rototiller ;-) could harm it. I've left some of these 0625 traps in the garden for 5-6 years, and they still look like they did when they were new.

    The new one is made from a thinner, stiffer, more brittle plastic that I'm guessing will break down over the seasons.

    The old 0625 design comes in a 2-pack for $25 on amazon, so that's a better deal anyway. This 0626 is going back.

    If you locate the gopher, all you need to do is completely bury this thing in the ground with some grass in the back of the trap.

    If there is light or wind able to get into the tunnel, the gopher is just going to fill it up with dirt.

    Open a hole up, see if the gopher back fills it. If he does, you know he's in that tunnel.

    Should be able to catch him within a couple hours of setting the trap. Place the opening of the trap towards the tunnel, cover it up a couple inches of dirt. Spring pops up, you have solved your gopher problem

    I have the older victor gopher black box trap, and unfortunately they discontinued them, so now they have these new ones. So, I prefer the older ones so much more because their smaller, the trigger seems to be more sensitive, and I have had lots of success killing gophers. Now, with this one, it's OK. It's bigger which isn't convenient because you have to make a bigger hole in the yard. I 'm not a fan of setting it up because it just doesn't give me a confident feeling like the old black box gopher trap did. I haven't had much success with this one. I think I've only killed one with it.

    With this all said, it's a good price, and it'll definitely kill the gopher. Like I said, it's a bit bigger, it's just requires more preparation of setting it in place compared to the old model.
