    for new jazz fan

Sometimes it helps to remember the old saying "understand the rules, so you know which ones to break...".
This is an adventurous CD that skims the top of previously recorded songs and makes something entirely different from the remains...sometimes it's brilliant, sometimes it's kitsch and camp - but I give it kudos nevertheless for its sheer ambition!
So, what to make of this CD? First off, THANK YOU Thievery Corp. for pulling it together. I've come to expect nothing less from you guys, who always find a way to keep it fresh, soulful and a bit warped...
I've grown to like this CD quite a bit. I should say, it has grown on me. Still, there are definate high points and low points to this collection. IMO, The Gold goes to Dorfmeister for "Spanish Grease" (a slammin' version of Willie Bobo's original), Thievery Corp. for a sophisticated, dreamy version of Astrud Gilberto's "Who Needs Forever?", Joe Claussell's "Feelin' Good" and Masters At Work's "See-Line Woman" (thank you Nina Simone!), and De Phazz's sublime and sultry version of Ella's "Wait 'Til You See Him"....all of these are top rate remixes that undestand the original and compliment it with masterful arrangements.
Then there is the "camp" category: Dinah Washington dancing in white, knee-hi patent leather go-go boots - in a cage yet! Cute. Like Austin Powers' schtick is cute (thank you Rae & Christian)...Mark De Clive-Lowe's remix of Shirely Horn's "Return To Paradise" is blasphemy if you're a Horn fan - like taking an original oil painting and reducing it to a Hallmark greeting card - yet it works on it's own merits - kind of endearing - like the other songs in the "camp" category, including UFO's tricked-out version of Sarah Vaughn's "Summertime". Cheeky!!
Dzihan & Kamien find a way - against all odds - to make a Billie Holiday song work well within the confines of this CD's concept...their version of "Don't Explain" is like a reverie; like nodding off in a fast moving train - you're moving forward while your mind is in another place and time...
Then there is the rest...two songs that put a nasty bruise on this CD...the LAST TWO (could it be a mere coincidence?). Give me a break. There is no way to make Billie Holiday's sorrowful and deep "Strange Fruit" a part of any "party album", which is exactly what this CD is. Tricky has made a really bad choice here, mixing a twisted, downer of a cocktail that could only find a place at LAST CALL...As for King Britt's "Hare Krishna", all I can say is: "SPARE ME!"....
This CD belongs to those who dare...and you know who you are!
    Go for it!!

Tired? Depressed? Just plain cranky? Pop this CD in and feel your woes magically melt away. The first track, "Spanish Grease," will get your tailfeathers shaking, and by the time the brassy horns cut in on "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby," you'll be strutting your stuff like it's going out of style.
Then just when you're about to collapse from keeping up with these high-powered mixes, the album slows down with "Summertime" and climaxes with the bizarro beats of "Strange Fruit." I admit I cringed a bit when I heard this Billie Holiday classic had been remade for the hip-hop age... but Tricky's minor-key style and deft touch actually enrich this timeless track, bringing a new depth to its mournful lyrics and unshakable imagery.
Some "jazz purists" may not appreciate these bold restylings; but honestly, those of us raised on more modern sounds will find "Verve Remixed" an accessible introduction to jazz standards, as well as a stellar listen on its own merits.
(Warning... you may want to draw your curtains before turning this one up. It can be quite embarrassing to look at the front window to see your elderly neighbors observing your attempts at Hustling across the living room floor.)

For those die hard snobby jazz fans and musicians, stay clear away from this CD and insult the umixed version of this CD. Those of you who are open minded and REALLY enjoy music like me (5,000 CDs, LP's & 45's to prove it!), will enjoy listening to the original unmixed CD, and this reworking of the originals.
Current top DJ's remixed these Jazz standards into a modern day experience. Some of the tunes are enhanced by it's reworking like Carmen Mcrae's How Long Has This Been Going On? The original version emphasizes the unique phrasing of Ms Mcrae while the MJ Cole remix gives it sultry revamping complete without disturbing the message in the lyrics. Astrud Gilberto, best known for The Girl From Ipinima, sings Who Needs Forever? and both versions maintain the airiness of the tune with a totally different feel. Thievery Corporation did the honors. Willie Bobo's original version reminds me of the music in Bette Midler's version of In These Shoes, while the remix is updated to downbeat funkmix. There are 2 Billie Holliday tracks to choose from, Don't Explain and Strange Fruit. Nina Simone also has 2 tracks including Feelin' Good and See-Line Woman.
Ther are so many other arists that would enjoy a music makeover. Next concept could be singer/songwriter's with a jazz /pop flair.
It would be nice to see other remixes like Melissa Manchester's standard Come In From The Rain or Phoebe Snow's Poetry Man.

Not many CD's make you heart skip a beat the moment you listen to them. This is definitely one of those rare finds. And this is why:

    1) The quality of the original (unmixed) tracks is superb. Great songs to begin with.

    2) The remixes do great justice to the original songs and performers. There's a great deal of respect to these legendary performers and their voices in the remixes.

    3) The quality of these remixes is outstanding.

The result is unbelievable. You'll get an incredibly well-produced compilation of jazz hits from SUPER-performers such as Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday remixed by MEGA-DJ's/producers like Rae & Christian, dZihan & Kamien, De-Phazz, Thievery Corporation, King Britt, UFO, Funky Lowlives, etc...

BUT BEWARE, the sound is not jazz (maybe nu-jazz or electro-jazz, but not jazz). It is definitely sexy, groovy, funky, retro-cool, classy electronic music with touches of jazz. Perfect for any situation. Pre-party warm-up at home, martini-drinking at a nice lounge, people-watching at THE white party in South Beach, or maybe simply at home working on your laptop.

This CD is sooo good, it's gonna make you feel hip, cool, and sexy...But all that BS aside, the track selection, remixes, and overall production quality make of this album a TRUE GEM. Go get it.

The idea of taking a “classic” track and updating it for club consumption isn’t new and the road to success is littered with the burnt-out wrecks of failure. But when it works it, as it does on most of the tracks here, the results can be quite magical.
So, what makes it work? Well, in the case of Richard Dorfmeister’s stunning interpretation of Willie Bobo’s “Spanish Grease” it’s understanding why the original is so infectious and then overlaying & seriously extending these elements with the very best of electronica/dance to make it… much better. Or in the case of Thievery Corporation’s total rework of Astrud Gilberto’s “Who Needs Forever?” its taking a couple of phrases from the song that capture the atmosphere & essence of the artist and using them to produce something that, while it bears little relation to the original, becomes one of the very best Astrud Gilberto tracks you’ll ever hear.
Clever & brilliantly effective, the whole album is stuffed full of similarly impressive remixes by some of the best club artists around and, if you like this sort of thing, it’s an absolute “must buy”. And, if you don’t, it may well make you think again because once it gets its hooks into you it’s pretty impossible to put down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Verve Remixed: Wenn Jazz und Groove sich küssen

This set of classic jazz remixed by modern chill and electronic artists is TOP NOTCH, and by far the best of any of the "Remixed" series. I frequently play this in the office when I need a pick me up, and it's just plain fun. If you're a jazz purist and don't get the whole deal with sampling and remixing, this may offend, but if you're looking for something to get your toes a tappin' - this is it! If not, maybe, baby, you should find something new.
