5.0 out of 5 stars It works.
Verified PurchaseI've kept my wok and a flat bottomed wok in my pantry for years. My wok wouldn't work on an electric cooktop so I bought a flat bottomed wok but it didn't really work, either. It didn't get hot enough and what I cooked would be soggy. It would drive water out of vegetables and they would sort of stew. Not appetizing and I didn't enjoy the experience or the food like I did when I had a gas stove. I could turn the heat all the way up and the flat-bottomed wok would get hot but It was too heavy and awkward to lift the pan to control the heat and there was no cool zone with the large flat HOT bottom. I saw this on 鶹. My wok works again. This gets my wok hot enough. I just need to get my rhythm back so I can tend the wok and prepare ingredients at overlapping times. That's when it's fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for genuine woks (thin walls, protective shipping costing, and must be seasoned).
Verified PurchaseWhen I saw this unit alone for the price it was posted at - I took the plunge. I wasn't disappointed. I was finally able to use a genuine wok (round bottom, thin walls, protective coating for shipping that needs to burned off, seasoned, and never cleaned with soap). If you are used to using department store woks (thick walls like a frying pan, non-stick coating, flat bottom), this isn't for you.
I already had a flat bottomed induction burner and was using it with department store woks and other cookware. It did not disappoint - which is why I was looking for an induction until with a round bottom. It's different from fire - the energy is concentrated where the coils are below the wok and the coils do not cover the entire black concave surface. If you want to know where all the action is, full it 1/4 of the way with water and see where the boiling occurs. Unlike fire, the heating quickly falls away where the wok is no longer near coils. It also has a somewhat cooler spot in the direct center of the unit. This unit allows me to cook fried rice just like the restaurants. The flat bottom department store woks did cook well, but it was always missing that final sizzle that seemed to come with authentic take-out.
Once I figured out how this was different from fire, I was able to use it effectively. There is very little heat loss unlike fire or other types of cooktops. But this guy gets hot hot hot - essentially making the metal of the wok the heat source, rather than an external heat source that has to transmit energy to the wok - thus heating up the air around it.
It's not 5-stars because there is a learning curve. There is a model with the same burner that comes with a wok, but not only was the included wok too small (I use an 18"), it was also one of those thick walled non-stick coating woks that doesn't quite do fried rice like the restaurants. Incidentally, the restaurants will use a 22" or larger wok - with thin walls, shipped with a protective coating that must be burned off, seasoned with oil, and never cleaned with soap.
What would 5-stars look like? At the very least, the coils should span almost the entire concave surface rather than under 1/2 the surface area as it does in this model.
If someone's idea of a wok is one with thicker walls, non-stick coating, and a flat bottom (available at department stores), then a flat induction burner will do nicely.
- It overheatsReviewed in the United States on December 27, 2024
3.0 out of 5 stars It overheats
Verified PurchaseOverall i like the design, and when it works the power output is quite good. I love gliding my round bottom wok on the burner.
However right around when the wok gets pre-heated to hot enough for stir frying, the burner overheats and needs a time-out for about a minute, which is long enough for the wok to lose significant temperature. It doesn’t indicate it’s overheated, but you can hear the humming sound suddenly stop and the food stops cooking. This really sucks in the middle of stir fry as this type of cooking relies on high heat at fast speeds and cannot have the burner suddenly give out in the middle of cooking. To get around this I’ve developed a sense of when the burner overheats (less than a minute after peanut oil reaches smoke point) and uses wok tossing and adding ingredients to cool it down. I’ve also paired it with a butane torch as a backup when the burner fails, and to simulate some wok hay. But really those workarounds should not be necessary and the burner should be able to run at max power continuously.
Also a minor complaint - the temperature knob should be on the left side since right hand holds ladle.
Fix those 2 things and this is the perfect burner!! Induction + butane torch makes so much sense for at-home wok cooking.
