The shelf arrives in a long, large cardboard box. Inside the box, a lot of the components are in plastic bags while the main shelves are tied together with tie straps. Once you cut through those, there’s an instruction booklet that’s very easy to follow for the assembly. The important part is to remember that the shelf with the rails goes on the bottom and has to be high enough from the ground to allow the laundry bags to hang underneath.
As far as functionality, compared to my existing shelf, these are designed to be installed with the ridges of each shelf pointing up so that items can’t slide off. This means you won’t be able to put oversized items that are slightly deeper than the shelf. Even if you try to reverse them, it won’t work because the plastic stoppers that hold the shelf in place can only be mated to the shelves one way. As long as this isn’t a problem, you’ll have plenty of room on the shelves and they also include some plastic sheets (like a placemat feeling) to put on the shelves to stop small items from falling through the cracks.
Assembly took me about 30 minutes (mostly spent adjusting the shelves to the level I wanted) and I did it by myself with no issues. If you find yourself not wanting to use the canvas bags with the sliders, you can absolutely install the shelf without them and put it lower to the ground for stacking more items. There are also hooks for each end that are completely optional and can be put at any height between the shelves.
Overall, these are really strong shelves and I like that the unit can be adjusted in many different ways. The assembly was simple and they also provide anchors to put into the wall if you’re planning on placing a heavier load on it. If you’re looking for a strong metal shelf that gives you options, I highly recommend this one!
