A shocking discovery of human bones reopens an almost fifty-year-old cold case—and rips apart the lives of a group of friends—in a riveting novel by Loreth Anne White, the 鶹 Charts and Washington Post bestselling author of The Maid’s Diary.

When human bones are found beneath an old chapel in the woods, evidence suggests the remains could be linked to the decades-old case of missing teen Annalise Jansen.

Homicide detective Jane Munro—pregnant and acutely attuned to the preciousness of life—hopes the grim discovery will finally bring closure to the girl’s family. But for a group of Annalise’s old friends, once dubbed the Shoreview Six by the media, it threatens to expose a terrible pledge made on an autumn night forty-seven years ago.

The friends are now highly respected, affluent members of their communities, and none of them ever expected the dark chapter in their past to resurface. But as Jane and forensic anthropologist Dr. Ella Quinn peel back the layers of secrets, the group begins to fracture. Will one cave? Will they turn on each other?

The investigation takes a sharp turn when Jane discovers a second body—that of the boy long blamed for Annalise’s disappearance. As the bones tell their story, the group learns just how far each will go to guard their own truth.

Such an excellent novel....grabbed me from the 1st chapter! Flew thru the pages wanting to see where the investigation of one of the *Shoreview Six*, took Detective Munro?? The Detective herself has an interesting back story that is intertwined into the novel. Captivating group of school friends and the secrets they have held onto! Set amid beautiful British Columbia, this is another of her novels I highly recommend!

I have found a new to me, writer, Loreth Anne White and I picked another of her many award-winning books and popped it into my Kindle right away. I did that because I just finished, The Unquiet Bones, and it was terrific.
When the story opens, two guys are working on an excavator, digging up the concrete foundations of an old chapel when they hook two long bones. It is not an animal because one of the long bones has the end of a woman's boot with a platform heel hanging off it. So begins the incredible story of a missing and murdered person more than forty years before. The detective who is tasked with solving the "cold case" is a woman, Jane, who is pregnant and also suffered a loss not long before she is handed this case. The book is un-put-downable. And for my fellow Canadians, there is plenty of Canadian content, especially about the West Coast where the story takes place.

Likes: I really liked the flow and suspense she created in this book. There was a little bit of moral ambiguity from the character from Mary's point of view that I enjoyed. The big twist was great, I thought it was going one way but totally surprised me at the end. I was totally immersed in the story too. I read it in like 3 days, couldn't put it down.

Dislikes: it's dated by leaning into current world events, pop culture and PC talk. It wasn't necessary to the story. Some of the descriptions went too hard with fancy diction. It made it lame sometimes.

Like/dislike: the amount of knowledge about criminology was great if you dont know about it but if you do, it's redundant. Great knowing the author knows what she's talking about though, reassuring for sure.

Is it possible to keep secrets hidden forever? And, if something occurs to unravel those secrets, what happens to the lives of those who committed the wrongdoing and swore to hide it? The Unquiet Bones by Loreth Anne White explores these questions when homicide detective Jane Munro takes on a cold case after skeletal remains are discovered beneath a chapel being relocated near Vancouver.

When forensic evidence links the remains to a young teen named Annalise, who disappeared in the 1970s, Detective Munro pushes aside her grief over the mysterious disappearance of her boyfriend on a hiking trip to follow the clues. The discovery also stirs the attention of the Shoreview Six, a group of high school friends who might have been involved in Annalise’s death. Now successful adults, the Shoreview Six come together to ensure their secrets stay hidden. White takes the reader on a rollercoaster ride as we weave in and out of the lives of the Shoreview Six, Annalise’s parents and sister.

Detective Jane Munro is a complex, fully human character. She’s on the cold case team because losing her boyfriend affected her work. That she’s pregnant complicates matters. As the story evolves, Munroe realizes she needs support and reaches out to colleagues and her mother. Doing so creates a haven of safety and support for the young, pregnant homicide detective as she delves into an unpleasant death.

A former South African journalist who now lives in Canada, Loreth Anne White is the author of 37 suspense, thrillers, and police procedural novels; she’s best known for The Maid’s Diary. As the story unfolds, White also explores the relationship dynamics between the members of the Shoreview Six. She details their connections in high school, and it’s clear who has more influence over the others and why they choose to hide each other’s actions. In the present, the Shoreview Six have families and successful careers. Still, as more information comes to light about Annalise’s death and points Detective Munro in their direction, their carefully constructed secrets unravel thanks to their power struggles.
The Shoreview Six aren’t the only ones with hidden secrets in this gripping mystery. We follow White’s clues to what we imagine to be the truth, only to be redirected with a plot twist to an unexpected conclusion. Additional forensic discoveries reveal even more secrets, but in the end, there is justice for Annalise and closure for the families.

One reason the story stayed with me was because the murder occurred in the late 1970s, and the Shoreview Six were around my age. White’s detailed descriptions of clothing and high school activities reminded me of being a teen at the time, and Annalise’s death stirred up emotions. Beyond that connection, I was drawn into the story because White is masterful at creating fully developed and engaging characters, and she skillfully crafts a tightly unfolding plot.

I highly recommend The Unquiet Bones. Readers will love this mystery that weaves detective work and forensic science into a riveting story.

Another fantastic story by this author, edgy dark and intriguing with a strong female lead character, the ending was a surprise as well. I really hope there’s a continuation to this story to cover Jane’s loss.
