Purchase options and add-ons
Understanding Nature is a new kind of ecology textbook: a straightforward resource that teaches natural history and ecological content, and a way to instruct students that will nurture both Earth and self. While meeting the textbook guidelines set forth by the Ecological Society of America, Understanding Nature has a unique ecotherapy theme, using a historical framework to teach ecological theory to undergraduates.
This textbook presents all the core information without being unnecessarily wordy or lengthy, using simple, relatable language and discussing ecology in ways that any student can apply in real life. Uniquely, it is also a manual on how to improve one’s relationship with the Earth. This is accomplished through coverage of natural history, ecology, and applications, together with suggested field activities that start each chapter and thinking questions that end each chapter. The book includes traditional ecological knowledge as well as the history of scientific ecological knowledge.
Understanding Nature teaches theory and applications that will heal the Earth. It also teaches long-term sustainability practices for one’s psyche. Professor Louise Weber is both an ecologist and a certified ecopsychologist, challenging ecology instructors to rethink what and how they teach about nature. Her book bridges the gap between students taking ecology to become ecologists and those taking ecology as a requirement, who will use the knowledge to become informed citizens.

About the author

My book is titled Understanding Nature: Ecology for a New Generation and it is an ecology textbook, but it can also be read by a generalized audience. As an ecology professor for almost 30 years, I've learned that people need an emotional connection to nature before they work to protect her. My students connect best when I talk about the ecotherapy benefits of being in nature. Once engaged, my goal is to help readers understand what they observe in nature, and not fall victim to myths or inaccuracies. As far as I know, I'm the first woman in the world to be first-author of an ecology textbook. The difference that makes is this: conventionally, ecologists were taught that nature is a machine and observers must be emotionless to avoid bias. My book encourages the reader to engage their love of nature, while learning the many ways to organize their thoughts about nature. From Traditional Ecology Knowledge, to population, community, ecosystem, and landscape ecology, to wildlife management, restoration ecology, and conservation biology, there are many ways to view the same mountainside in nature. Understanding Nature follows the directives of the Ecological Society of America and their 4DEE format for what to included in an ecology textbook.

5.0 out of 5 stars Accessable and compelling, even for a layperson!
Verified PurchaseThere are so many things to love about this book; here are just a few of my favorites:
1. Each chapter opens with an activity (mostly outdoors) for the learner to engage in.
2. Each chapter ends with "thinking questions" that aid the learner in digesting what they have read.
3. Although chapters are short (approx. 10-15 pages), the themes and ideas are covered in detail, often
illustrated with pictures or easy to understand chart/graphs.
4. Although primarily written to be used in the college classroom, the writing is accessable and
compelling to someone such as myself who is not a student of ecology, but who has a deep interest in
nature and the health of our planet.
I am not reading the book from cover to cover, but rather wandering through at my own pace and purpose and I am enjoying every moment and new discovery! The author's passion and love for her subject shine through in a way that is highly engaging. Anyone who desires to better understand the world we live in, should have their own copy of this wonderful resource. I highly recommend it!
