Umma: A Korean Mom's Kitchen Wisdom and 100 Family Recipes Kindle Edition
鶹
Learn Korean cooking alongside social media star Sarah Ahn as her umma passes down 100+ family recipes and decades' worth of kitchen wisdom.
Sarah Ahn’s viral food videos of her and her mom have captivated millions of viewers with their behind-the-scenes look at Korean cooking and multigenerational home life. This collaboration is now a must-have cookbook blending the emotional intimacy of Crying in H Mart with practical culinary advice from Nam Soon’s lifetime of kitchen experience. - Thorough ingredient guide: Walk through a Korean grocery store with a Korean umma for in-depth guidance on what pantry ingredients and fresh produce and protein to buy.
- Recipes both traditional and contemporary: Learn to make everything from simple banchan, a variety of kimchi, and foundational stews to an assortment of yasik (midnight snacks) and inventive desserts.
- Kitchen wisdom from mother to daughter: Shared confidences open a window onto a level of family intimacy rarely seen in cookbooks.
The Ahns understand that when generations come together in the kitchen, so much is shared: not only food, but also knowledge, advice, family history, and love.

- Reviewed in Canada on April 16, 2025Verified PurchaseBeautiful hardbound thick book with great pictures and wonderful stories intermixed with recipes. I pre-ordered this back in January and was excited to finally have it in hand in April. It's lovely. I bought it because I love following Sarah on Instagram. I had no idea she was part of America's Test Kitchen until the book arrived. And then both me AND my husband were extra excited to see that ATK was involved with the book too. It's heartwarming, interesting, recipe-tested AND full of recipes for Korean food.... I wish I could give it 10 stars!
- Reviewed in Canada on April 2, 2025Verified PurchaseThis is a beautiful cookbook, with lots of photographs and personal stories intertwined with the recipes. Sarah Ahn's Instagram account is entirely devoted to her family and Korean food, and that same dedication shines through in this book. As someone who cooks frequently but has only a slight knowledge of Korean ingredients and techniques, I appreciate that there are significant sections focused on explaining them. Measurements are provided in both imperial and metric, and there are a wide variety of mains/sides that are on the faster side as well as dishes that require more time and planning.

- Reviewed in Canada on April 2, 2025Verified PurchaseI have followed this wonderful Mother and daughter for a while, and I have never been so excited for a new cookery book. I've been reading it ever since it arrived and I'm only putting it down to go out shopping later for the ingredients for the dishes.
Before getting into how wonderful they both are, the book itself is not your average cookery book. It's about how the food and the culture are one and the same, how the love that goes into the food is a way of expressing love to everyone it's made for, how that love is passed through generations. It's moving to be able to feel this and to feel it coming to you from the way the book is constructed - pages of advice on foundational Korean ingredients, how to discern what's good in produce, and explanations of how a meal is constructed, what the dishes mean. It brought to mind all the times I spent with my Mum when she was teaching me how to cook - explaining what every thing was, where it came from and why we, as a family, ate it.
And this at core is what this is - a family cookbook with the notes your Mum and her Mum made. So, the recipes are really well explained with Ummas advice on what you can compromise on and the ingredients you absolutely can't. I really appreciate that as someone who has never really used some of the ingredients before. All the recipes have step by step instructions and photographs.
The relationship between mother and daughter, the way food is an expression of love - I found it very moving to see this because you can't NOT see it or feel it. It's in every recipe, every tip, every little piece of advice. And it's pouring out of the stories that frame who they are and their journeys to get where they are.
It's a wonderful cook book and so much more - I cannot recommend it enough.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 5, 2025Verified PurchaseA truly beautiful book … full of excellent instructions , clear photographs of ingredients etc . Amazing price for such a large hardback book. I’m not Korean but I love Korean culture and have already got hubby hooked on some Korean favourites like kimchi and bulgogi and fruits etc that were unknown to us . I found this author on YouTube and pre- ordered this book right away and I’m so glad I did ! You won’t be disapointed!
- Reviewed in Canada on May 30, 2025Verified PurchaseI found her on IG and had to purchase the book.
I love the story behind it and the food of course.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 3, 2025Verified PurchaseBeautifully written, heartwarming stories and a book that will be well loved.
- Reviewed in Canada on July 20, 2025Verified PurchaseThis cookbook is amazing! A few recipes like the kimchi jjim and salt bread already became a family favourite. Thank you for sharing your family recipes with us 💖
- Reviewed in Canada on June 9, 2025Verified PurchaseThis is one of the few times I have purchased something that I felt that I paid far less than what it was worth. This cookbook is HUGE and so well written, you can feel the love that is poured into it. DEFINITELY a MUST buy.

Verified PurchaseThis cookbook presents a compelling introduction to Korean cuisine. During my search for resources on the subject, I encountered numerous cookbooks. However, this particular volume immediately captured my interest, primarily due to its appealing presentation and the promise of authentic, home-style Korean cooking. While I did review other publications, I found myself consistently drawn back to this one. Its high quality is immediately apparent, offering not just a collection of recipes, but also a narrative with depth and character. Opening the book evokes a sense of comfort, inviting the reader to spend hours immersed in its content. The combination of stories, recipes, and detailed explanations makes this book exceptional. The quality of the photographs and the thoroughness of the recipe instructions are particularly noteworthy. The explanations of culinary techniques are also quite engaging. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to explore the rich culinary heritage of Korean cuisine. It is a book to be savored, best enjoyed with a warm beverage, from cover to cover. I am pleased to have discovered a resource that provides an engaging summer activity and a valuable learning opportunity. I trust you will find the experience of reading this book as enjoyable as I have. I am eager to begin learning new culinary skills. The book evokes a sense of nostalgia, recalling the comforting memories of my mother's cooking and the cherished moments spent together in the kitchen. This book is truly special, and I am grateful for the memories it has brought to mind..
