- Reviewed in Canada on February 27, 2025Verified PurchaseAdam's approach to golf is very analytical and practical. He is a unique thinker. His way of laying out the golf swing, practice habits, routines, and the way we learn as humans is very fascinating. This book made me take a real hard look at my own motor patterns in my quest to rewire my brain as a life long slicer. A must have for any golf enthusiast taking the game seriously and wanting to improve. This book will be a great accessory for your golf learning. Note this is not a traditional golf advice book and the technical aspects may turn some people off.
- Reviewed in Canada on May 8, 2016Verified PurchaseWhether you are a recreational player or a handicapper (of any current index) with a real desire to understand and improve your play do yourself a favor and pick up a copy. 28hcp or 2.8 there is much within for all.
Started playing when I was 9 and this book is arguably the single smallest monetary investment I've ever made in my game that is without question one of the best investments in my game I've made. Don't let the lead title fool you, this is not simply a "practice" manual. This is a textbook, in my opinion, that walks the player through the fundamentals of the ball flight laws, through learning concepts and ideas into Case Studies that reinforce teachings.
TPM has been laid out in a specific order and sequence. The author advises to NOT skip around - especially on the first read. There is a reason for this and is fully intentional. To get the most out of this book and your game, start and finish in order. It is important.
As I progressed through the book, and being a tinkerer, I started to recognize many things I was innately doing, thinking or even practicing. This was rewarding - at least I was not totally off my rocker. What was much more important though, was recognizing the areas that I was either not doing at all, not doing consistently, or was doing things out of order.
Having articulated concepts such as Ball Flight, Locus of Attention and SIPFATS was huge for me. Instantly I could relate to how I've been going about things in a less than ideal manner and it has actually been holding my game back. It became very apparent of where I needed to properly place my attention.
Since getting the book and reading it once (I'm on my third round), I reformulated my own practice and approach to the game. I spent the better part of 5 months seeking out and researching potential Coaches to find a "fit" and have now started working with someone for the first time in my 30+ years of playing. And I will continue to [happily] drive 3 hours to see him.
Our very first meeting resulted in a 3 hour session on the range together and while he is incredibly accomplished as a player and PGA recognized Instructor, I firmly believe that my new understandings gained through reading of TPM made this session infinitely more useful and productive.
On the drive home I reflected on the session and when I got home I picked the book up. Why? I wanted to touch back on concepts to re-read and reinforce. For most of the afternoon I was in a Consciously Incompetent state of learning. Definitely had some uncomfortable spells of Unconscious Incompetence. By the end, I was approaching an early level of Conscious Competence.
In 3 hours we'd covered and moved through aspects of the first 14 Chapters - Especially Calibration.
What the author has done very well is compile a logical progression through some pretty seep subject matter in order to best help golfers of all skill levels with all levels of talent.
Not going to lie. This is a meaty book. Some 368 active pages of concepts and thought that will require your focus. If you are truly serious about getting better, then this won't be an issue for you.
Golf is a hard game. There are no silver bullets or shortcuts; however if understood and thoughtfully applied, the information in TPM is about as close as your going to get.

- Reviewed in Canada on April 13, 2019Verified PurchaseLike the title says, "The Practice Manual: The Ultimate Guide For Golfers" is just that. If you want to learn, know and understand why your golf ball does what it does and behaves the way it behaves, then this is the book that you need to buy and thoroughly read even if that means using a highlighter marker to underline all of the important information. If you're looking for a book that will tell you how to grip the club and have a pretty PGA Tour swing this is not the book for you. There's plenty of deep reading that requires some serious attention and some concepts and ways to practice that Adam Young points out that are so frighteningly obvious I'm surprised that no one has mentioned them before. I have a lot of golf books whose pages have attained the lofty status of bar-b-que lighter fuel. This is a book that's in my golf bag and when on the range I refer to it as I need to because I know that it will have the answer that I am looking for. Highly recommended purchase for anyone that actually wants to own their own swing and become the best golfer that they can be with the tools that they have.
- Reviewed in Canada on February 17, 2018Verified PurchaseGreat book for any golfer out there looking to get more out of their practice and improve their game. A deeper dive into the game of golf that goes past the basic instruction of most golf books and into the physics and psychology of why things happen on the golf course. It's a phenomenal reference for any aspiring golfer whether you're scratch or high handicapper.
It is not a difficult read, but it certainly isn't a book you will fly through. It's stout and packed with a TON of information that will require you to reflect on what you read and how it applies to your current game. If you implement some of the suggestions and really analyze what is happening in your golf swing, practice, and rounds this book will help you improve.

- Reviewed in Canada on October 21, 2023Verified PurchaseGreat book. Good concepts covered and helps with overall game
- Reviewed in Canada on February 21, 2020Verified PurchaseThis is an easy, practical book to read that offers a great deal of insight on your own process of learning, assessing skill level in the various parts of the game. It provides concrete steps as to how to develop a good practice routine that can help you work on targeted areas and improve your game. I have played golf for many years and found I had a lot to learn from the approach. Its the off season here in Quebec, CA so I have been working on my game indoors and find it useful.
