This is a complete kit for making a replica of Earth's solar system, and it will be so fun for my oldest grandson especially. He is in the seventh grade and is in love with all things space and science this year. He finds it all fascinating.
This kit includes:
• 9 Foam balls (sized for the sun and planets)
• 12-Color acrylic paint set
• Glitter powder for extra sparkle
• Wooden sticks for mounting
• Foam base for display
• Glow-in-the-dark stickers
• Planet fact guide
• Planet memory game
The kit comes with everything you need to get started, but we found that the paint containers are a bit small. We actually needed to get more paint before we were halfway done, so you might want to have some regular acrylic craft paint on hand, or even the special paints made just for planetary models. To keep the paint from soaking into the foam, it works best to apply several light coats. Dabbing the paint on works well for some parts, though it does take a little longer to get it all done that way.
This is a great STEM learning activity that is perfect for a family night or as a solo creation. It’s an ideal set for school science projects and fairs because it helps kids learn the names and the order of the planets in a hands-on way. It also makes a wonderful gift for birthdays or holidays for any child who loves space.
A few tips we found that worked best:
• Use something to make a handle to use for holding the items as you are painting them. The wooden sticks works well, or anything similar. Just put them into the foam pieces.
•It’s easier to do half of a planet at a time, just making sure to use the same amount of paint on both sides.
•For the glitter, it can be mixed into the paint and applied on the as a top coat after all the previous costs have dried completely.
Overall, this kit offers a lot of value for both education and recreation, and I would highly recommend it for anyone who has an interest in space, science, and astronomy.
