Not a musical per se, The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg doesn't feature any lavish production numbers like a standard musical. Instead, director Jacques Demy and composer Michel Legrand use music, in the form of sung dialogue, to tell a fairly simple story of two young lovers who must part and live their own separate lives.
The great composer Michel Legrand not only wrote the music score we hear in the background, but also the lyrics and music the characters sing to each other. This may have been the first motion picture to feature all the characters singing instead of speaking, a remarkable achievement in the history of film. Director Jacques Demy is at his absolute best in this picture. His gracefully moving camera is the most noticeable part of his work here. It starts with the very first shot of Cherbourg harbour and continues all the way through the film. It almost seems to function as part of the music, just as in a traditional musical. Demy's stunning compositions alone make the picture worth watching, from the aforementioned first shot to the snowy final sequence at the Esso station.
Bernard Evein's beautiful sets and Jean Rabier's gorgeous colour photography are also unforgettable.
A masterpiece that any viewer will enjoy.

A da direita do blu-ray japons da Happinet.
No blu-ray do Jap?o o cu azul, e as nuvens s?o brancas, como sempre foram nos DVDs anteriores deste filme. Tambm nele a neve branca. Nos blu-rays anteriores da Criterion e do Cin-Tamaris as imagens j estavam como neste 4k, como tivesse um celofane amarelo na frente da tela. Vou continuar assistindo o meu Blu-ray Happinet apesar das imagens n?o estarem t?o ntidas como neste 4k UHD da Criterion.
