Do you want to read The Turn of The Screw? If so then keep reading...

Widely recognized as one of literature's most gripping ghost stories, this classic tale of moral degradation concerns the sinister transformation of two innocent children into flagrant liars and hypocrites. The story begins when a governess arrives at an English country estate to look after Miles, aged ten, and Flora, eight. At first, everything appears normal but then events gradually begin to weave a spell of psychological terror.

One night a ghost appears before the governess. It is the dead lover of Miss Jessel, the former governess. Later, the ghost of Miss Jessel herself appears before the governess and the little girl. Moreover, both the governess and the housekeeper suspect that the two spirits have appeared to the boy in private. The children, however, adamantly refuse to acknowledge the presence of the two spirits, in spite of indications that there is some sort of evil communication going on between the children and the ghosts.

Without resorting to clattering chains, demonic noises, and other melodramatic techniques, this elegantly told tale succeeds in creating an atmosphere of tingling suspense and unspoken horror matched by few other books in the genre. Known for his probing psychological novels dealing with the upper classes, James in this story tried his hand at the occult -- and created a masterpiece of the supernatural that has frightened and delighted readers for nearly a century.

Excellent but needs a very close read or you will miss the story and its complexity. The narrator inserts prepositional phrases in the main verb phrase which can make following the story difficult at times; also, antecedents of personal pronouns can be confusing in the dialogues. Make the effort and be amazed.

Is the narrator crazy or is it the children who are possessed? A real psychological thriller and a fun read!

In a way, this book is not so much about ghosts, supernatural powers, horror etc. At the end of the day, it poses some deeply psychological, ethical and possibly causal questions that interest most of us in life. Namely, concerning the consequences of our actions, thoughts, desires and especially our attitudes towards other humans. Despite being children, the allegedly evil protagonists in the book appear really contradictory, insincere but convincing. The governess, on the other hand, seems to be willing to help them correct their wicked ways, thus indirectly saving their lives and future. The real cause for concern is that the kids eventually would not change for the better, improve or learn something beneficial.
I suppose, the story is somewhat allegorical. Basically, the author does not give any direct answers or explanations on the storyline. We could speculate as long as we want, but we will never be sure whether our suggestions are true or not. By all means, this book makes us think seriously about our life goals.
In the mean time, the writing talent of Henry James is indisputable.

Just because something is old shouldn't mean it's a classic. That's my thinking after finishing "The Turn of the Screw." The writing was like a river I had to splash through just to snare any sense, the prologue didn't mean anything really to the rest of the narrative, and the ending blew. The only things I liked were the appearances of Quint and Jessel.

The binding is cheap and cracks as soon as you start reading it. As for the content, I¡¯m not Henry James¡¯ biggest fan but it¡¯s a good to have his most famous shorter works in one volume.

Confusing, different, but enjoyable if you understand it, this is not a light novel. The Turn of the Screw: absolutely different. (That for all of you who would like to know why this little 86 page quasi-novella is considered a "classic").
How to read this book: Rather than looking onto another person's life, (like you would with any other novel), you need to get inside it. This is particularly disturbing because the narrator is mad. Crawl into her head, and start seeing things from her eyes -- but don't forget the fact that you're in there! Everything you see is distorted. Yes, everything she says is verbose, too complex, and ambiguous, but if she were to write short, clear sentences, you would understand it, wouldn't you? She's insane ... insane people are not straightforward in any way. If you are wondering why you are reading a page over and over again, and not quite getting it, you're doing exactly what Henry James wants you to do: he's turning your screw. This can be a terrifying novel because everything you see it through the eyes of an insane woman ... but this is not a ghost story. That is too simple an explanation. James plants evidence which could sway you to one direction, but he always counteracts it with another piece of information leading to another conclusion: in other words, it leaves you lost. A plot can only be identified once you come to terms with the fact that your narrator is a psychopath.
If you look closely, the sexuality in this book is widely used. In the 19th century, to speak openly of sex was forbidden, so hints are dropped instead, (pay particularly close attention to Miles). Some critics call the governess a sexually suppressed woman -- her cause of madness is thus. You decide.
But whatever you do, bear in mind that this book is different. You can't simply read it ... you have to read it, think about it, and decide whether you want to believe whatever is said. It can be a frustrating read, but it can also be well worth it.

Loved the simplicity of the story. The nanny and the two children caught my attention throughout. This this is the oldest book I've ever read. I know this is an adaptation, but still. Good old school horror
