What happens when an unadventurous adventure writer tries to re-create the original expedition to Machu Picchu?
In 1911, Hiram Bingham III climbed into the Andes Mountains of Peru and “discovered” Machu Picchu. While history has recast Bingham as a villain who stole both priceless artifacts and credit for finding the great archeological site, Mark Adams set out to retrace the explorer’s perilous path in search of the truth—except he’d written about adventure far more than he’d actually lived it. In fact, he’d never even slept in a tent.
Turn Right at Machu Picchu is Adams’ fascinating and funny account of his journey through some of the world’s most majestic, historic, and remote landscapes guided only by a hard-as-nails Australian survivalist and one nagging question: Just what was Machu Picchu?

Review
“[An] engaging and sometimes hilarious book.”—The New York Times Book Review
“A serious (and seriously funny) travelogue, a smart and tightly written history, and an investigative report into perhaps the greatest archaeological discovery in the last century.”—NationalGeographic.com
“An engaging, informative guide to all things Inca.”—Entertainment Weekly
“Adams deftly weaves together Inca history, Bingham's story, and his own less heroic escapade....Those favoring a quirkier retelling [of Bingham's exploits] will relish Mr. Adam's wry, revealing romp through the Andes.”—The Wall Street Journal
“Quite funny and unpretentiously well informed...The perfect way to acknowledge the lost city’s one hundredth birthday.”—Christian Science Monitor (“Editor’s Choice”)
“[An] entirely delightful book.”—TheWashington Post
“With a healthy sense of humor...Adams unearths a fascinating story, transporting his readers back to 1911, when Yale professor Hiram Bingham III hiked the Andes and stumbled upon on of South America's most miraculous and cloistered meccas.”—NPR.org

“That's all right,” John said. “We'll need mules for a trip like this and the arrieros—the muleteers—can set up the tents. How do you feel about food?”
ٴǰ?”
“You like cooked food?” John asked.
I admitted that I did, in fact, have a weakness for victuals prepared over heat.

- Reviewed in Canada on January 5, 2017Verified PurchaseVery enjoyable. I did the hike 30 years ago, before crowds and restrictions. Lots of memories revived. Anyone planning the trail should read this first or during.
- Reviewed in Canada on March 25, 2013Verified PurchaseI recently returned from a trip to Machu Picchu but I read this book prior to taking my trip. It gave me wonderful background on the place. Although I did not take the 4 day hiking trip on the trail, I did walk on some of the trail up to Machu Picchu, and it was truly awesome. I liked how Mark Adams retraced the steps of Hiram Bingham III (who discovered the place in the early 1900s), including maps of the various trails around the site. I would recommend this book to anyone who is planning to go to Machu Picchu.
- Reviewed in Canada on August 3, 2018Verified PurchaseI read this book before I went to Peru and it was really fun and informative to read. I would definitely recommend to read before travelling the Inca Trail.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect reading for a trip to Peru / Machu Picchu
Verified PurchaseI started reading this while I was traveling in Peru. I only wish I had started earlier. The book reads like fiction even though you're absorbing a massive amount of history. Adams makes it easy to digest. Plus, there are so many details in it, that you'll gain more from your trip to Machu Picchu by reading this. I've looked for other books about Peru and Machu Picchu and this is honestly the best and most interesting of the bunch. If you start with this, you'll have most of what you need to immerse yourself in the history of Machu Picchu.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very readable account of an expeditionl to the lost city of the incas and Machu Picchu
Verified PurchaseThis is a vrery interesting and amusing account of an expedition the author made into Peruvian jungles to visit Inca sites including the lost city and Machu Picchu. On the way a lot of history of the Inca civilisation and the Spanish conquest is given in a very readable way. On the wat the reader gains an understanding of the various sites and remains and the reason for their alignments. The author pokes fun at himself in an underastated way and the book is so enjoyable that I have reread it twice.

3.0 out of 5 stars Light reading with some history.
Verified PurchaseWritten by a seasoned travel author - and it shows. A combination of the authors personal experience retracing some of the steps of Hiram Bingham, mixed in with paraphrased extracts of John Hemmings. Conquest of the Incas.
