Got this for an Atari ST, since that uses a 9DB connector for its joystick port. I was very hesitant because there are lots of 1 star negative reviews here. However my experience has been worthy of 5 stars. Decent length of cable, positive switching action and fair “retro” look. Nice touch with the rounded corners making it easier on the hands. I’ve already played a few games with it and it holds up well. Fair value for money.

Color may Vary
While the item description states the color may vary, there’s no information on just what it will vary to. So I was pleasantly surprised to receive mine today, along with the Ranger, to find out the new color scheme is now to match the two. The color pattern, though applied as a decal, looks both modern & yet retro at the same time, complimenting the original Atari very well. While I appreciate the wood grain look (and wish such a thing could come back), I appreciate that Hyperkin is trying to make controllers and systems that are both evocative of the originals (as with the Retron HD / Super HD, and 77) but have their own design cues. Hyperkin has designed some nice looking controllers at a low price point here, but the joystick is also a nice improvement (as is the Ranger game pad). The 4 decade old controllers the Atari came with, though lightly used, really felt worn out (and not to mention the Joystick/paddle Sears II controllers that felt even worse). The Trooper feels much closer to what the original controller should be based on my vague childhood recollections. A great replacement for the originals (and to save the good looking but poor feeling originals)! The stick itself doesn’t feel quite as rubbery, as I think the stick is hard plastic and only the rippled boot is rubbery, unlike the original where it was one piece of rubber overtop of plastic. Overall the Trooper probably isn’t as durable as the vintage Wico ones you can find around, but is probably the best close replacement for the originals, and should last about as long.
Thank you for your feedback

- Reviewed in Canada on April 7, 2022Verified PurchaseOf the modern remakes of this iconic controller, Hyperkins' Trooper is a major step up in build quality. It is superior in every way to other CX10 clones.
That being said, like the Atari originals, the stick will not survive more than a few months of frantic gameplay (and a few drops on a hardwood floor) before snapping at the base. (the unit I am replacing gave me 10 months) It should be stated that I've had other knock-off Atari joysticks last as little as a week or less.
On the + side:
- left or right hand button (note NOT a 2 button joystick, both buttons are button #1)
- Responsive buttons
- ideal controller weight, very comfortable (not sure if the dropped corners make a difference or not)
- VERY long cord. Actually that's an annoyance for me, but I can see where it could come in handy for living room retro gaming, so I list it as a +.
It's similarly priced to other CX10 knock-offs yet is several orders higher in build quality. (it is also, like the original from Atari, not built for long-term survival with overly "enthusiastic" players)
- Reviewed in Canada on November 13, 2024Verified PurchaseGreat retro feel. Is sturdy and responsive. Would buy again. Works flawlessly with retro and modern systems.
- Reviewed in Canada on June 25, 2024Verified PurchaseWorks extremely well but 3 times heavier than others Atari controllers on the market.
Ideal for those who want to grow their wrist muscles...
After less than five minutes of playing Miss Pac-Man, I have to take a break to rest my wrists...
It is therefore the ideal controller for bodybuilding enthusiasts... (laughing!)
- Reviewed in Canada on June 17, 2020Verified PurchaseThis is a nice controller - feels well built, and I like the distinct look instead of just copying the original Atari joysticks. I bought this for use with our Flashback 8 Activision Edition, where the wireless controllers aren’t always reliable. I played with my son for probably about an hour, through several games and it works very well.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 12, 2020Verified PurchaseSecond update... ordered a new controller three weeks ago. The left fire button already collapsed. See pic. Completely unacceptable. Taking back my recommendation and five stars.
Update... The stick snapped off tonight after a year or so of use. Disappointed. In almost 40 years of playing Atari, this is a first.
I’ve been playing Atari games since 1983, having used a lotta lotta different 9-pin joysticks over the years, on three 8-bit Atari platforms. Only to say I’m a veteran of the consoles and their controllers.
Having now used my Trooper joystick for several months, I’m able to provide a fair review.
I highly recommend it, with two caveats:
1) the stick itself can become unscrewed. It requires tightening quite frequently... occasionally mid-game; and
2) there is a lot of play on this stick compared to the original 2600 controllers. Quite simply, the stick needs to move further to make contact. This can hinder gameplay when very quick back and forth movements are required.
If you can tolerate these issues, you will be very happy with this controller. The fire button in particular is quite responsive.
If Trooper could combine its brilliant fire button with tighter movement, it could likely be the best Atari controller yet.
Nevertheless, the fact Trooper is putting this excellent though not perfect joystick out there in this day and age merits five stars.
Big ups, Trooper.

- Reviewed in Canada on January 15, 2024Verified PurchaseWe all know that the Atari joystick is one of the worst loved joystick.
It is brutally difficult to use, makes the game harder and will cause you pain up to the shoulders.
This joystick is a perfect balance between tight, stiff and smooth yet very confortable.
It feels much higher quality and heavy than the original.
That is a good thing.
Not only it looks good, but will allow you to play longer times and score higher.
That thing is sexy, in fact I prefer to play with that joystick than my body.
A must buy for any purist.
Now I will ask to them to make a usb version.
I need that thing on my other devices.
MAINTENANCE : If moving the joystick makes too much noise and friction. Open the joystick by removing the 4 screws below, 2 are hidden under a rubber. Then with a q-tips, lubricate the 2 plastic parts that touch with 3 in 1 oil. Test that all buttons are clicking correctly before putting back the screws. It is a very well made, well engineered thing.

abraXXiousReviewed in Australia on September 15, 20205.0 out of 5 stars Great option for Atari 2600, Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, Vic 20 etc!
Verified PurchaseI can confirm these work PERFECTLY for the retro systems that use a 9 pin Atari style joystick and a single fire button, unlike many other options such as the Hyperkin Ranger which DO NOT work on the Commodore 64 etc.
High quality stick with a nice feel and construction and well priced.
Highly recommended.
