First off, the Speensun is a bit of a different design than my old steamer. That one you held it almost like a flat kettle. The Speensun you almost hold it like a hair brush. I can't really say which is better, but the Speensun is definitely a unique design with its rotating handle, that swing 180 degrees to fold or to open up as a handle. The body of the Speensun is shaped like a peanut but has the more traditional mini-iron look to it. I do like that it has an easy to fill water tank at the top accessible by a flip out cover. You get a little fill cup but it can also be easily filled holding it under a tap. The tank is also transparent so you can check your water level, which is a great feature. The body of the steamer is all plastic while the iron pad is made out of metal. I can't say I am a huge fan of the green color with gold trim though. At the top of the rotating handle there is a little touch pad with a single button to set the mode. You can set it for iron (no steam, low steam, medium steam and high steam. There are light up icons that show what mode the steamer is in. With the steamer you also get a plastic rest plate to put the iron on, a mit and a pouch style carrying case. I also want to point out you get a decently long AC cord at about 4-5 feet. Overall, the Speensun is plasticky but well made.
What I was really surprised by was the performance. First off the steamer is quick to start releasing steam. It takes only about 30 seconds for some steam to come out. You can basically start using it as a steamer at that point. At high setting the Speensun produced much more steam than my old name-brand steamer. That does get what you are trying to steam a little wet with water though so just watch out. I would say it's good for heavily wrinkled or thicker items. I didn't find a big difference between low and medium though so those two setting, and I found them fine for t-shirts, dress shirts, or basically thinner material clothing. Just a couple notes here. The steam only comes out at the top few holes. You can hold the steamer upright, no water will leak out. As for the iron function, it also worked fine but it has a small surface area so will take a while to iron a piece of clothing out. The iron does get quite hot. My handheld infrared thermometer just read Hi as the temp was above the thermometer's cutoff. You can set the steamer to one of the steam settings and use it like a steam iron to help get stubborn wrinkles out. My only small complaint is with the controls. I found the touch sensitive button not too responsive sometimes. You just have to tap it a couple times occasions to get it to change modes. There is also no on/off function. Once plugging in the steamer is on, and unplugged the steamer is off. Both are not big deals or deal breakers in my opinion.
The Speensun is not the most portable of travel steamers but if you need it for travel it's a small suitcase penalty for something that works well. For me I thought the steam performance was great and it's nice having the extra iron function. I like that it has a little pad that you can put the steamer down after use, a thoughtful touch. While I don't think the mitt was necessary, as the body of the steamer doesn't get hot, it was again a thoughtful addition and added safety item. Overall, aside from aesthetics and some control lag, the Speensun is a nice little handheld steamer and something I would not hesitate to recommend!
