Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Other George Smiley Stories
Audible Audiobook
– Abridged
鶹
Call for the Dead (Abridged): George Smiley had liked the man and now the man was dead. But why? Fennan was dead with a note by his body saying his career was finished and he couldn’t go on. Smiley decides to investigate—only to uncover a murderous conspiracy with its roots in his own secret wartime past.
A Murder of Quality (Abridged): Miss Ailsa Brimley is in a quandary. She's received a peculiar letter from Mrs Stella Rode, saying that she fears her husband is trying to kill her. Reluctant to go to the police, Miss Brimley calls upon her old wartime colleague, George Smiley. Unfortunately, it's too late. Mrs Rode has just been murdered. To discover the truth, Smiley must lift the lid on a world of hidden passions and dangerous hatreds....
The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (Abridged): In the shadow of the newly erected Berlin Wall, Alec Leamas watches as his last agent is shot dead by East German sentries. For Leamas, the head of Berlin Station, the Cold War is over. As he faces the prospect of retirement or worse—a desk job—Control offers him a unique opportunity for revenge.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (Abridged): The man he knew as 'Control' is dead, and the young Turks who forced him out now run the circus. But George Smiley isn't quite ready for retirement—especially when a pretty, would-be defector surfaces with a shocking accusation: a Soviet mole has penetrated the highest level of British Intelligence.
Smiley's People (Abridged): George Smiley was summoned from his dubious retirement by two seemingly unconnected events—an old woman in Paris is promised the return of a daughter she will never see, and a handover is to take place on a steamer in Hamburg.

- Reviewed in Canada on June 22, 2024Verified PurchaseEven if you’ve seen the film the novel is extraordinarily worthwhile. It can be quite slow in the first half but picks up rapidly from there. Like The Spy Who Came in From the Cold, Tinker Tailor transcends its genre. It’s far more than a spy story. It’s a story of human life.
- Reviewed in Canada on September 10, 2023Verified PurchaseI wanted to read this book ever since I saw the movie. I was looking it in paperback as I want to take it on vacation to read on the plane. I am very happy to have found it at a good price and since it is no longer available at my local bookstore, it makes it even more special.
- Reviewed in Canada on December 18, 2023Verified PurchaseGood background for early BBC adaptation of Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy.
- Reviewed in Canada on September 23, 2024Verified PurchaseI agree with the reviewers who say the book is just too convoluted. Maybe I’m just not smart enough for it. I got through it but can’t say I enjoyed it.
- Reviewed in Canada on June 30, 2023Verified PurchaseLots of twists and turns, great cast of characters,
and the master lays out an unpredictable path.
- Reviewed in Canada on July 9, 2023Verified PurchaseTinker Taylor Soldier Spy is certainly a challenging read with a complex writing style maybe its just me as English is not my first language. The plot is intriguing, but I found the language could have been simpler to help the reader better grasp the narrative. However, compared to The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, also by John le Carré, it maintains the same thrilling vibe. Both are excellent reads for those who enjoy intricate narratives however, I found The Spy Who Came in from the Cold to be a easier read.
- Reviewed in Canada on October 7, 2020Verified PurchaseAn astonishingly complex and moving thriller that is also great literature. Perhaps his finest novel. A classic that will endure for its weaving together of twentieth century history with character suspense and profound feeling. A heady combination.
