Tiamat's Wrath: The Expanse, Book 8
Audible Audiobook
– Unabridged
鶹
The eighth novel in James S. A. Corey's New York Times best-selling Expanse series - now a major television series.
Thirteen hundred gates have opened to solar systems around the galaxy. But as humanity builds its interstellar empire in the alien ruins, the mysteries and threats grow deeper.
In the dead systems where gates lead to stranger things than alien planets, Elvi Okoye begins a desperate search to discover the nature of a genocide that happened before the first human beings existed and to find weapons to fight a war against forces at the edge of the imaginable. But the price of that knowledge may be higher than she can pay.
At the heart of the empire, Teresa Duarte prepares to take on the burden of her father's godlike ambition. The sociopathic scientist Paolo Cortázar and the Mephistophelian prisoner James Holden are only two of the dangers in a palace thick with intrigue, but Teresa has a mind of her own and secrets even her father, the emperor, doesn't guess.
And throughout the wide human empire, the scattered crew of the Rocinante fights a brave rear-guard action against Duarte's authoritarian regime.
Memory of the old order falls away, and a future under Laconia's eternal rule - and with it, a battle that humanity can only lose - seems more and more certain. Because against the terrors that lie between worlds, courage and ambition will not be enough....

I was hooked on this volume. The best in the series so far. I love where the story went and where it leaves us for the final book. Every character is involved and brings something new to their personal story. I am so excited to read the last volume but also don't want it to end.
- Reviewed in Canada on November 26, 2024Verified PurchaseThis novel is yet another prime example of how to write space opera that delivers the action while remains in solidly grounded in the emotional impacts of people living their lives and trying to maintain their humanity under extraordinary circumstances. This series just keeps getting better!

- Reviewed in Canada on August 29, 2021Verified PurchaseThe Expanse has solidified itself as one of the best sci-fi series ever written, and it has peaked with its eighth instalment. Everything carefully set up and expanded upon over the series starts to come to a head, and the stakes are raised to a new degree. The writing is as good as ever, adept with action sequences without losing sight of the emotional stakes for the characters.
The series boldly moves into new territory while keeping the appeal of the books as a whole. Impossible to put down. Can’t wait for the last novel in this series.

- Reviewed in Canada on June 22, 2022Verified PurchaseWow, really digging the 8th book. I had watched the TV show first, so the initial six books were a refresher, I enjoyed the 7th, but so far this one has blown me away. I literally have to force myself to put it down and go to bed at night. Hopefully the last 3 books get made into another series at some point.
- Reviewed in Canada on May 4, 2019Verified PurchaseYou won't be sorry if you start at the beginning of the series. And, you won't have to wait for the next seven books to come out. Book 8 is also a great continuation of the story and action. I love the TV series as well and also thank 鶹 for taking it on. And thank you again my son for letting me know that this tale was out there waiting to be enjoyed.
- Reviewed in Canada on November 6, 2022Verified PurchaseI have enjoyed the show and the books immensely. Is it wrong to hear the characters voices when reading the books? I don't think so, in my mind the characters have evolved but been bang on who I expected them to be. Amos last conversation with Holden was perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great ending....maybe?
Verified PurchaseAs a big fan of the book series and the TV adaptation, I pounced on this the moment it came out - I'd intended to start reading it after I finished the book I was partway through, but I confess that as soon as I unpacked this I put the other one aside and jumped straight in to find out what was happening....
WARNING: some non-specific spoilers ahead for this book and the previous one in the series, hopefully nothing that would ruin it for any but the most fanatical of spoilerphobes, but well, you've been warned!
The previous (seventh) book in the series, Persepolis Rising, was both good and frustrating in equal measure - because it was the first half of a major two-book arc and ended on a very downbeat note, with our main characters scattered and the Bad Guys firmly in the ascendancy... very much the "The Empire Strikes Back" of the series. If Persepolis Rising is the series' TESB, then I guess Tiamat's Wrath is its ROTJ - the new book very successfully takes us from this low point to a very satisfying (to me, anyway) conclusion, but not without some great drama and very emotional losses along the way - let's just say that you can feel George R.R. Martin's stylistic influences here, with the two authors of the Expanse being part of his "writing circle".
There were a couple of moments that I felt smacked just a bit of Deus Ex Machina, without which the story would have had a very different conclusion, but I didn't think they justified dropping a star for - they don't jar badly enough to spoil the story.
You certainly get a feeling of the time that has passed in the characters' universe - we are now several decades from the events of the early books in the series; I am not sure whether this eighth book is the final volume in the story, but if it is then they will have left it at a solid and generally fan-friendly ending.... if there IS to be another book - or books - planned (and the very final line of TW does leave this door at least ajar!) then I feel that what comes next will have to introduce a significant number of new younger characters to continue the story....
All in all, very enjoyable and very highly recommended - but you really need to read the full series in order, or at the very least read the seventh book (PR) before this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Si torna sugli standard iniziali

5.0 out of 5 stars Another riveting chapter
Verified PurchaseI have read all of the novels in the Expanse series. I have also read several series by other authors. Expanse is in another universe(pun intended). The character detail is unique, the stories are intriguing, the action is non stop and at the end of every novel I scream for more. This novel is one of the best. I rate it 5 stars. The death of one of the main characters is handled with sensitivity and in the end we know that the story is just beginning. The introduction of Theresa is another teaser and only a taste of what is next to come.
