James Bond is in disgrace. His medical report is critical of the high living that is ruining his health, so M packs him off for a fortnight to a health farm to be tuned up to his former pitch of exceptional fitness. Bond expects a trying two weeks. The last thing he expects is an adversary more deadly, more ruthless even than SMERSH.

Sent to the Bahamas in search of two stolen nuclear missiles, Bond still manages to hit the casino tables and act the playboy, working to get close to the sultry Domino, the mistress of treasure hunter Emilio Largo.

Thunderball is an incredible adventure that finds Agent 007 tackling SPECTRE, a daring crime ring operating in the Gulf Stream, which has perpetrated the most arrogant blackmail demand ever attempted.

Ian Fleming was a British author and journalist. His first novel, Casino Royale (1953), introduced spy hero, James Bond, agent 007, to the world. It was the first of fourteen James Bond books which have gone on to sell over 60 million copies worldwide and be translated into 20 languages. Beginning with the movie adaptation of Dr No in 1961, the series also sparked the longest-running film franchise in history. Both Fleming and his fictional counterpart have become synonymous with style, glamour and thrilling adventures, as well as universally recognised phrases such as ¡°My name¡¯s Bond, James Bond¡± and ¡°shaken and not stirred¡±.

Fleming was born in London in 1908. In the 1930s he worked at Reuters news agency before joining Naval Intelligence as an officer during the Second World War. His talent for writing fast and engaging prose, along with his knowledge of espionage and his fertile imagination led to the creation of James Bond, arguably one of the most-famous fictional characters of all time. He also wrote children¡¯s classic Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Fleming was married to Ann Rothermere with whom he had a son, Caspar. He died in 1964.

65 years on and Fleming's writing still has that contemporary relevant feel. Bond is more real than ever, well crafted and with even more human qualities than portrayed in past novels. A wonderful spy tale and a great adventure.

THUNDERBALL is a very interesting Ian Fleming James Bond novel. I found the first two thirds of the novel very well written. The final third of the novel seems to lose all its steam and sinks into literary mediocrity and that's what really interests me. The first third of this novel contains some of the best prose that Fleming ever put on paper. It is rich in detail and thoroughly engrossing. It is a true delight to read and savor. As the novel enters the second the third it still remains engrossing but seems to lack some of Fleming's usual drive and coherency. The final third falls below what could even be considered commonplaceness for Fleming. Fleming seems to have just given up on this project at some point and just finished it out to get it into publication. Yet THUNDERBALL remains one of my favorite Fleming novels. The first third truly is brilliant and I enjoy reading it and examining at what point Fleming became disinterested.

5.0 out of 5 stars Movie script that became a Novel that became a Movie

The story of Thunderball is quite intriguing. Originally written as a movie script (long before Dr No) by Ian Fleming and Kevin McClory. When no one on Hollywood was interested in buying the script, Fleming turned it into a novel. Later of course it was turned into Sean Connery¡¯s 4th Bond movie. With Bond, it is always interesting to read the source material from Flemings novels and compare it to the movies. This novel is quite good, and, quite minimalist. No underwater jet packs, ejector seat Aston Martins, nor parachuting SCUBA armies. Instead, Bond saves the day with a Geiger Counter, a spear made with a broom handle and a fixed blade knife, and the help of his CIA buddy Felix Leiter. In the end, the film Thunderball is an enhanced storyline but still, pretty true to the novel. You could see though that with each new film made, the storylines began diverging farther and farther away from the original Fleming tales of 007. If you are a true James Bond fan, if you haven¡¯t done so already, do yourself a favor and read the original Fleming novels in the order that Fleming wrote them ( not the order the movies were made). They are classics, and, Fleming¡¯s character James Bond may arguably be the most famous character ever created in film and modern literary history.
