Purchase options and add-ons
The first in a seductive new romantasy series from #1 New York Times bestselling author Scarlett St. Clair. Banished and betrayed, Lilith rises from the shadows of her past to claim forbidden power―and a destiny written in blood and desire.
She is the beginning and the end.
She is peace and chaos.
She is terror knocking at the gates.
Estranged from her powerful family, Lilith Leviathan finds refuge in Nineveh, a district in the city of Eden devoted to sin. There, she uses her magic to steal for a living, attracting the attention of the five governing families as well as the church, which expects women to remain pious and silent. When Lilith comes into possession of a beautiful blade, she thinks all her worries are over…until her usual buyer dies while inspecting it.
Frantic, Lilith turns to the only man who can help her: Zahariev, head of the Zareth family and ruler of Nineveh. His currency is information, and his power is extortion, though he’s always had a soft spot for Lilith. But when the dagger appears, he isn’t sure he can protect her from what’s to come.
Together, they embark on a mission to discover the true power running their world. As their lives intertwine, Lilith realizes Zahariev is more than just a friend, but their devotion to each other is a threat―to the truth, to the church, and to those who want to tear it all down.
Perfect for fans of:
- Frenemies to lovers
- Slow burn but the sexual tension is...toe-curling
- He falls first
- Neo-noir mafia fantasy vibes
"In this sumptuous and steamy dark fantasy, bestseller St. Clair reimagines Eden as an intensely patriarchal, über-religious society... Determined to make her own way, (Lilith) relies on her power over men’s desire to steal the things she needs―but, for some reason, gorgeous Zahariev is constantly in her path and swooping in to clean up her messes... A promising series launch." - Publishers Weekly

- Reviewed in Canada on July 28, 2025❤️I absolutely loved this book. If you are someone like me who is obsessed with Supernatural and Lucifer , the aspect of angels and demons and a different take on biblical stories this is your book! Also Scarlett gives us a pronunciation guide for all the people, places and things! Finally I’m not having to make up names in my head for what I think the name would be 🤣
🖤I honestly can’t get over this book and all the easter eggs/ references to real life/biblical stories. I have no words for how good it is. The ending had me almost throwing the book because I did not want this story to end. Do we know when book 2 comes out? I needed it yesterday. I loved the different relationships and the found family Lillith finds for herself. Be prepared for rollercoaster of a ride as I went through all the emotions reading this book
❤️To the women who were told they must submit to the dominance of man
🖤Ahh we all love a morally grey man and Zahariev is my new favorite. A dark hair, tall like a tree, tatted, hot af man who would end anyone who hurt his girl. We do love a little bit of an obsessed man who would do anything for her. Zahariev is the head of the Zareth family who rules over Nineveh the district in the city of Eden completely devoted to sin and the place Lillith finds refuge after running away from home.
❤️Lilith may be one of my new favorite FMC, she’s strong headed, knows what she wants (even when she is scared to take it), fights for the ones she loves and what she believes is the right thing to do. Growing up in a very religious household led by the wants and needs of the church. Even then Lillith knew that the ways of the church were not for her, as they put women down and made it so men held all the control over their wives and daughters.

.ೃ࿐ my thoughts
Generally, Scarlett St. Clair is a hit-or-miss author for me. While I enjoyed the Adrian x Isolde books, her Hades x Persephone series wasn’t for me. But this was such a good book!
I liked the relationship between Lilith and Zahariev; it felt very realistic and the complicated family ties made a lot of sense throughout the story. I also loved how we got snippets of their relationship from before the story started.
I was a bit confused by the world/magic, and it wasn’t explained very well, which left me feeling confused during parts of the story. Some of the explanation didn’t come until part 2, and at that point, it felt a bit late for worldbuilding. For me, this would have been a 5-star read if the magic/world had been explained better and at an earlier point in the story.
The hype is definitely worth is and I cannot wait for the next book!
- Reviewed in Canada on July 8, 2025Sexy. That’s the only word for this audiobook.
Can I just start by saying that Laura Horowitz and her enticing portrayal of my new book girlfriend, Lilith, were pure perfection? I’ve followed Laura for a while, but this was my first time hearing her narration—and damn. She had the hair standing up on the back of my neck in the most delicious way. Sensual. Sharp. Seductive. Yeah… definitely sexy.
In a world where women wield all the magic and power, Lilith uses hers to survive. It’s worked well, until she steals the wrong thing. A bit of magical persuasion and a shiny dagger seem like the payday she needs… but death follows that dagger. Now, hunted for it, her world begins to crumble.
Then the dreams start. Prophetic. Dark. Too real. As terrifying myths bleed into reality, Lilith needs answers. Zahariev is the only one she can turn to: her friend, her new boss, and her greatest weakness. He’s by her side, protecting her, helping her… resisting her. Lilith has always wanted him, but Zahariev is just too stubborn for his own good. Maybe it’s time she took that carefully drawn line of his… and made him cross it.
The addiction was instant. Lilith is fierce, magnetic, and unapologetically headstrong, but it’s her quiet insecurities that make her so compelling.
And Zahariev? Dark. Powerful. Utterly intoxicating. His silent devotion to Lilith had my heart pounding. Their connection is electric. And the slow burn between them? One of the best I’ve ever read. The banter, the tension, the pining—and then the payoff. Oh yes… that was some toe-curling payoff.
Beyond my obsession with my new book boyfriend and girlfriend, the worldbuilding was stunning. I saw Nineveh in deep shades of black and red: dark, gritty, and decadently vivid. The plot flowed with precision, pulling me in deeper with every chapter.
And that ending?
I did not see it coming—and it changes everything.
I feel an immediate reread coming on!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark, seductive, rage, rebellion, fresh new start to a romantasy series!
Verified PurchaseTerror at the Gates is the first book in the Blood of Lilith dark urban fantasy romance series. This was a super entertaining time. Filled with rage, magic, rebellion, power, religion, romance.
She is the beginning and the end.
She is peace and chaos.
She is terror knocking at the gates
This book gripped me from the start and I was so intrigued to see here it would go. It is feminine rage, religious tones, slow burn romance, all set in an urban fantasy setting. While not everything in this world made complete sense yet, it is the first in a series so maybe more will be filled in as we go. But something about this book had me not even caring that much as I was entranced by the story and the characters. We follow Lilith and in this world, women have magic but are subservient to their husbands (fathers before that) who are able to siphon their power/magic. In this world, religious doctrine rules their society and Lilith knows her father will choose her husband for her one day. She finds herself in a bit of danger when the story starts and needs help from Zahariev, a friend from another powerful family who is also the ruler of a dangerous city.
“I would go to war for you. I would fight endlessly to keep you. If that’s what you wanted.”
This was just fun, great banter, dark witchy vibes, her cute cat Cherub, in the slightest of ways this reading experience/book gave me lowkey Crescent City vibes (and not just because it’s an urban fantasy, but if you read it maybe you know certain parts I mean). We don’t get a whole ton from the hero, we mostly stay with Lilith’s POV, but I was fine with that. We get the barest of glimpses from Zahariev’s POV here and there but it worked for this first book. This felt fresh, dark, seductive, and enthralling! Now I can’t wait to see where it goes from here.

Immersive world with socio-political-religious parallels to our own that is confronting but in a “snap out of it” kind of way. It was a shake up, and I liked that!
Zar is a Zaddy and he knows it; so that’s something! I loved the relationship between the two main characters; they took their sweet time but it was totally worth it.
I had a good time and if there’s a second book (I think there should be) I’ll definitely be reading it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Five stars!!! My new favorite Scarlett St. Clair book.
Verified PurchaseI knew instantly when the blurb for this book was released that I was going to absolutely devour it. I have been dying for a good Lilith book. This book did not disappoint! I love a good feminine rage book and mixing it in with religious trauma was chef's kiss!!! I love how this book handled religion, making it its own but keeping it close enough to the source material for it to invoke serious feelings. It was close enough to reality without replicating reality if that makes sense. Anyone who loves fantasy knows we read the fantasy to escape the reality, so I really enjoyed how fine of a line this walked without overstepping. I enjoyed the worldbuilding and learning about the head family's, the church, and everything else that I don't want to spoil! I am so excited for book 2 to expand on what we already know now.
Lilith's character was imperfectly perfect to me. Her rebellion against the societal norms of her world, her rage and anger at her circumstances, her deep emotions and the wall she tried putting between herself and them, the way she had been made to feel so small and unable to do anything right by everything in her life and how that ended up being what gave her the power to be everything she was meant to be (and of course the part that Z plays in all of that). I related so much to her character. The way she believed her feelings made her weak and how feeling weak made her angry. How she pushed away the few things in her life that were pure because she didn't believe she deserved them or that anyone would ever look at her as anything more than a burden. Seeing her transformation from that to where she is by the end of the book was glorious. Even though she has new obstacles she will have to face after that cliffhanger when it comes to herself and how she feels about herself. Her growth was powerful.
And then there is Zahariev, who I am completely feral for and utterly obsessed with. Like seriously, where can I get myself one?! I love a man that is willing to burn the world for the women he loves. His patience with Lilith is so beautiful. He never pushes her and allows her to be exactly who she is. Never expecting her to be what their world believes she should be, not to mention he doesn't want her to be like that, as he loves her just the way she is. Their love is such a slow burn that I was on the edge of my seat absolutely begging for them to get together already! That buildup made it, so that it was absolute magic when they finally came together. They have me in such a chokehold.
Also, the side characters!!! I loved all of them. I was invested in all of them. I didn't feel like any of them suffered so another could shine. They all played important parts and had their own development and growth.
And then there is the big mystery that is the driving plot for the whole book, and I ATE IT UP! I was gnawing at the bars of my enclosure for evert piece of information I could get to figure out the larger puzzle. The twists and turns had me flying through this book. I am usually so good at guessing where a book is going and what is going to happen and when I say that I did not see this coming... I DID NOT SEE IT COMING! At every reveal I was speechless, jaw hanging open. And that ending?! Like whaaaaaat??? I have so many questions and my mind is still going a mile a minute since finishing!
I knew this was one of my most anticipated reads of the year for a reason and boy it did not disappoint! Waiting for book 2 will be a special type of torture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most anticipated read of the year, did not dissapoint
Verified PurchaseI received an ARC audio copy on NetGalley for this book (HELL YEAH) and it was SOOO good. Mind you I have been following all of the updates for this book since Scarlett started teasing it so I about died from happiness when I got accepted to arc listen.
This book was my most anticipated read of 2025 and by far my favorite book of the year as well. The world is set in a semi modern fantasy era, with very religious and mythological plot points. It was unlike anything I have read so far, it was really nice to read a fantasy book that was not like all of the main stream books where you can guess what happens next. It starts with a mystery that follows throughout and the lore behind it was very intriguing, I could not stop listening. The feminine rage I got over the way the women are treated, and especially Liliths story, was palpable. Liliths character is portrayed so beautifully. Trying to escape from the trauma of her past and a society that looks down on women; she is fierce and unapologetically herself which I absolutely loved. You see the emotinal rollercoaster she is going through and how she just keeps pushes and pushes back. Inspirational. Of course we cannot leave Zahariev out, as he is my new favorite book boyfriend, that man could get me to obey anyday. The friendship he has with Lilith was killllling me, the banter, the tension, it was perfection. Highly recommend this book to anyone that is looking for a great fantasy read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another perfect book by Scarlett St Clair.
Verified PurchaseScarlett has a way of captivating the reader and making them crave more, which makes her books impossible to put down. Lilith is raw, relatable, and witty. You could feel the joy and the pain she experienced with every page. Zahariev is charming, devoted, and sexy as hell. There is absolutely nothing he wouldn't do for Lilith. The spice was fantastic, as was the attention to detail when it came to the world building. I loved the urban setting so much, and I am positively fascinated by the demon blobs and other mythical beings. The real star for me was the found family Lilith has. The friendships were absolutely everything, and I can't wait to see how they continue to evolve with Lilith. The ending left me truly in awe and desperate for more.
A moment for the author: This woman has been an auto-buy author for me for years at this point. She is truly kind and has a true gift with storytelling. So much research, time, and thought went into this book, and I am so glad I read it.
TLDR: I love Scarlett and this book so much. Please read it and enjoy❤️
