Product description

The Tamron 18-300mm F3.5-6.3 is the world¡¯s first lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras with a 16.6x zoom ratio, the greatest feature of this lens, covering wide-angle to an ultra-telephoto range (27mm to 450mm full-frame equivalent). With this broad coverage, the lens empowers shooting in a wide variety of situations including everyday life and travel snapshots with wide-angle, dynamic ultra-telephoto, and macro photography. Its AF drive system uses Tamron¡¯s VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor autofocus mechanism for superior quietness and agile performance in still and video modes. The lens includes special optical elements arranged precisely to maintain high resolution performance from edge-to-edge and provide high image quality making it the best of all-in-one zoom lenses. Moreover, with an MOD (Minimum Object Distance) of 5.9¡± at 18mm, and a remarkable maximum magnification ratio of 1:2, this lens performs astonishingly well when shooting up close. This lens is equipped with Tamron¡¯s proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) mechanism, effectively reducing image blur caused by camera shake in low-light conditions or in the ultra-telephoto range at slower shutter speeds. Also, same as most other Tamron lenses for mirrorless cameras, the lens features a 67mm filter size. With a wide variety of other features for comfortable shooting, this is a highly versatile lens that allows you to easily enjoy high image quality from wide-angle to ultra-telephoto and paves the way for eciting new photographic experiences.

The "always on" camera lens

The "always on" camera lens
This lens permanently sits mounted on one of my three cameras. It's the ultimate walk around lens. Some have complained that focus is soft at 300mm, but I don't see this as a deal breaker. First off, getting the shot is more important than getting the lens out. This lens replaces both my 18-105mm and 70-300mm together. (Yes, the 70-300 is Full Frame and quite a sharp lens, but sharp means very little when you've missed the shot.) Second, I don't find the lens very soft at 300mm. The train tracks image was taken at 300mm. I am happy with how it turned out. A few more details about the lens. The extension barrel is a bit stiff while zooming out, but a lot smoother zooming back in. Not ideal for video I suppose, but I use mine for photography only. Auto focus is quick and accurate, and manual focus is smooth. The lens is well built and lightweight, but what crop sensor lens is heavy? Seriously. The weather sealing is a superb touch. I'm a bit of a clean sensor snob, so knowing that the lens is tightly sealed to the camera makes me feel comfortable. As mentioned above, I like the images taken at 300mm, and the close focus at 18mm is insane! Almost touching the subject, making for a macro style photo, as seen in the simple leaf image. Overall, this lens is well worth the money and I have no issues with it at all.

I was a little skeptical that a significantly cheaper lens than the Sony equivalent could produce quality photos but I was proven wrong. Took this on a safari to use with my Sony a6000 and for the price it¡¯s impossible to beat. The focal length range is impressive and meant I rarely had to switch lenses. Great ¡°all rounder¡± and worth every penny.

I am a huge fan of Tamron lenses and already own five! This one though will be returned only after a day of testing. The lens become extremely dull and soft beyond 70-80mm which defeats the purpose! You buy this lens to have long reach and if you cannot get good results beyond 80mm it does not make any sense!
    Cons:
    * extremely soft and unusable beyond 70-80mm
    * very slow and dark right after 50mm!
    * jumpy zoom ring which is opposite of smooth!
    * very poor bokeh effect compared to other zooms(and especially compared to primes at different focal lengths)

Might be a bit soft on the zoom end compared to lenses costing double for price. But overall a very versatile lens. Will come in very handy for travelling photos. Image stabilizations definitely is working on my a6700.

5.0 out of 5 stars Budget lens that packs a powerful punch
Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2025

It's really shocking how good this lens is for the price. I sold my Tamron 28-70 f2.8 lens, a powerful workhorse of a lens that does just about everything, so I could get this one. I knew going into it that it would be a slight downgrade, but I really wanted an all purpose lens that I could walk around with an do anything, and this one fits the bill. I don't think I'd recommend it for professional portraiture, but for what it does, it's a slam dunk.

The biggest shocker with this lens is the lack of significant distortion at the wider focal length. It really keeps everything looking good and clean. It's not as tack sharp as I'm used to with more professional lenses, but I'm not sure that I care, I really like this thing, and I'm hoping that it gives me the excuse to just go out and use my camera more often.

Attached photos taken on Sony A7Riii (full frame sensor with crop sensor lens)
Flower: ISO 100, 129mm, f9, 1/640 (it was crazy bright)
    Skull: ISO 2500, 103mm, f5.6, 1/200

Got it in five days from Â鶹Çø. Took it out to Melkote and Kere Tonnur the very next day to test the lens. I have mated it to my basic Sony A6000. The picture quality is excellent especially below the peak exposure level of 300mm. Feels solid, decent build quality. VC works top notch, I was on two hill tops with huge wind obstruction; with no tripod. The VC worked almost perfect. No vignetting. Very acceptable quality of pictures. Happy to have it on my Sony. Now I don't need to use the others - 18-105G lens, 18-55 kit lens, 55-210 telephoto kit lens... Tamron 18-300 exceeds expectations.
