I bought this as part of my never-ending-ultimately-Quixotic-quest for a perfect birding bag. I wanted something that ticked several boxes and I hoped that this one would be IT.

Spoiler: it isn't.

TL;DR: Not a bad bag in any particular way, but several small details prevent it from being top-10 for me.

Pros: roomy, especially side pockets (I can fit a canteen in one and a can of bug spray and sunscreen in the other easily); easily adjustable, and the kidney belt helps balance weight (but see cons); relatively lightweight for the size, material, and use; and seams and zippers seem well made.

Cons: not really water resistant (like, less than you'd expect, and I know it doesn't claim 100% water resistance but still...). During a three-hour session last week (during which my NorthFace jacket kept me 100% dry) this bag ended up having about 2CM of water in the bottom of the pockets; buckles are noisy, clunky, and loose; the pockets on the belt are too small and weirdly positioned so that they aren't really handy for anything larger than a deck of cards; the sleeping bag strap at the bottom of the bag doesn't stay tight and so anything held there keeps slipping as you're walking; and the chest strap is at the wrong place, is non-adjustable, and digs into my breastbone.

Would I return this? No, certainly not -- it's a well-enough-for-the-price bag, and perhaps someone else will love it, but for me it doesn't work.

I was using a 50L backpack and wanted one that had zippered side pockets so I looked at this 38L backpack. Plus, this had pouches on the front of the waistband which I knew would come in handy. Right out of the plastic bag I saw something which I did not like. The straps on the bottom to hold a blanket, roll, etc., dangle loose when empty (see 1st picture) and there is no place to tuck them in and rolling them up would be bulky...I can see these straps getting caught on anything and everything that might be sticking out and jerking you around. The inside main compartment does not hold a lot (I am use to a 50L backpack) and you can see a 1.5" binder does not fit inside the inner sleeve. Once I put my lunch kit and a 32oz water bottle there is room on top for a couple more items but if your going to put, say, winter gloves and a winter hat on top of this there is little room left for anything else. I also put a molle pack on it and it holds firmly but the straps are not completely functional. I find the straps on this bag were not well thought out in the design unless you are going with a full kitted out bag and purchase accessories to fit. If you are use to a larger interior volume backpack this 38L is not for you. Just picture 2L bottle of soda volume and you can imagine the difference between a 38L backpack and a 40L or 50L backpack, etc. I recommend this backpack for teens, maybe kids, who have a small lunch bag and 3 or 4 books and house keys or for adults who are making a quick bicycle trip to the store for milk and bread. The Pros of this backpack are the small zippered pockets on the front waistband, the larger side zippered pockets, comfortable to wear, and quality build. I decided to buy a 45L tactical backpack off of �鶹�� as this 38L just doesn't cut the mustard, I'll pass it on to a student.
