Worth knowing: The ever-green Desert Rose is extremely easy to look after. It belongs to the succulents and branches out sparsely. Its leaves develop directly from the stem. Growing about 5 cm in length, a striking feature of the plant are its very beautiful, elliptical-shaped, pink-red flowers.
Origin: The plant is indigenous to the arid areas of East-Africa.
Propagation: Seeds can be started indoors at any time throughout the year. Mix fine ground cultivation soil with about 25 % of fine sand (silica sand works best). In order to guarantee that the seeds will not fall through the soil, the soil mixture should not be too coarse. Moisten the mixture with a water vaporiser and sprinkle the fine seeds on the soil.
Place / Light: The Desert Rose thrives indoors all year long, does however require plenty of light and fresh air. A sunny to partly shaded location during summer is ideal. The plant may also be placed outdoors from June until September. Throughout the year, surrounding temperatures should vary between 15° and 25°C.
Care: Water only after the substratum has dried out. Young plants should generally be kept a little moister. Rain water and water free of lime are ideal. A surplus of water should be poured out in order to avoid standing water and root rotting.
Winter period: Do not keep the plant in temperatures below 12° - 16° C during winter, water little and do not fertilize. A winter period too cool or a dryness period to strong will make the plant entering a resting period.
Bonsai Suitability: No
ATTENTION: The Desert Rose is a member of the Apocynaceae or dog bane family. Sap dripping out of cutting marks must not come into contact with open wounds!
Seeds can be started indoors any time throughout the year.
