- Reviewed in Canada on July 11, 2025The TOSHIBA Rice Cooker is a versatile kitchen tool with intuitive controls. I use my rice cooker twice a day, for breakfast and supper.
I’m a big fan of rice cookers. They speed up food prep and allow you to take advantage of healthy and affordable foods. I’m an endurance runner, and most of my running friends consider a rice cooker to be a crucial bit of running gear.
Unlike my other rice cooker in this price range, the TOSHIBA has dedicated settings for different kinds of rice to ensure the rice comes out perfect, whether it be brown, white or the very nutritious (and tricky to cook well) GABA rice. You can also dial in the cooking by intended outcome, from sticky sushi rice to congee. (If you’ve not tried congee yet, give it a try. It is a very versatile soup base that can create a yummy soup with no supervision. It’s a real comfort food.)
Punching above its price point, the TOSHIBA Rice Cooker has a setting for steaming and includes a steaming tray. You can use this to steam a healthy basket of fresh vegetables, though I confess I use it more to steam asian dumplings, my comfort food.
Also rare at this price point is the TOSHIBA Rice Cooker, which has smart heating which automatically increases and reduces the temperature to get the most flavour out of the rice. That’s not marketing jargon-the rice does taste better compared to rice cooked on the stove.
The TOSHIBA Rice Cooker has a small footprint and won’t take up too much real estate on your crowded countertop. There’s a carry handle to make it easy to put away, though once you start using a rice cooker, it will not leave your countertop. At around 28 cm square, the cooker takes up less counter space than my espresso machine. (And, it is much less messy!) :-)
The TOSHIBA Rice Cooker has a thick, heavy cooking pot lined with a nonstick coating. It is not dishwasher recommended, but I never put nonstick items through the harsh chemicals of a dishwasher, as it is easy to clean the pot by hand. Water levels are marked on the side for various kinds of rice. That’s one thing I’d change-the grey type is slightly challenging to read, and I wish the type were in a larger typeface and printed in black ink.
The cooker has a 24-hour timer, but I’m not comfortable leaving rice or oatmeal sitting in a room-temperature pot of water all day, so I tend to use the timer for shorter periods. It is intuitive and easy to set. All the controls are there, and I appreciate the dedicated buttons for each function.
The steam vent is easy to clean, which is an essential feature if you make oatmeal in your pot. I make steel-cut oatmeal for breakfast every morning, and the TOSHIBA Rice Cooker delivers a perfectly cooked bowl with no stirring or supervision. I can catch up on my email and news while the Toshiba does the heavy lifting. Steel-cut oatmeal is such a healthy food, and costs pennies a serving. It is a great carb base for a morning run, full of energy and easy to digest with no sugar crash.
In a culture where none of us have enough time and the cost of healthy food continues to rise, a rice cooker is a good way to destress meal prep and utilize low-cost, nutritious foods. Rice and porridge are staples in my pantry, and are easy to buy and store in economical bulk purchases. Rice is an ideal base for many meals and helps reduce the stress of trying to figure out supper after a busy day at work.
Treat yourself to a rice cooker. You can thank me later! :-)

- Reviewed in Canada on July 10, 2025For people who need a very comprehensive rice cooker, this is excellent. And by the way, I did some research and learned that Toshiba was the first company to make automated rice cookers -- ever. So they've been in business doing this for a long time, and it shows. They know what they're doing.
The features of this rice cooker are probably far beyond what most people need, but they are really excellent if you have diverse needs. I have so far used this to cook white rice, quinoa, and steel cut oats. I'm going to be giving soup a try shortly, and also a cake using Greek yogurt. So far the results have been exceptional, literally you just throw your rice in, look at the water gauge on the side of the pot, fill the water to that point, and press the button. That's it. The rice or other grain comes out unfailingly fluffy and hot. It also has a warming feature that can keep it warm for you for hours and hours. Honestly, there's literally no way you can go wrong with this. It also has a delay timer where you set it according to the time you want your item to be finished. Simple. It may be a little more expensive than other rice cookers, but at a six cup volume and with all these settings, it's a nice splurge or upgrade for anyone thinking about buying one. Highly recommended.

- Reviewed in Canada on July 9, 2025This rice cooker is quite versatile since I can use one appliance for multiple purposes like cooking rice, steaming, and making soup. I really like the 24-hour timer feature, which makes meal planning much more convenient.
The inner pot feels heavy and thick, which gives me confidence in its quality and construction. However, I've noticed that it takes longer to cook rice compared to other rice cookers I've owned in the past.
The extended cooking time can be frustrating when I'm in a hurry or trying to coordinate meal timing. I also have to be very careful when opening the rice cooker because the inner pot gets extremely hot. I actually burned myself once when I wasn't careful enough while handling it after cooking.
- Reviewed in Canada on July 8, 2025This is a very good rice cooker. Aside from the buttons and printing on the top, it has a minimalist type aesthetic which I really like. The entire exterior is white plastic, the pot on the inside has a non-stick coating, is quite hefty, much more substantial than the pot in our old rice cooker. The lid has an aluminum plate that is easy to remove and clean. The controls are very easy to use, I figured out all the functions before reading the manual. These are the features that really stand out for me:
- It has a built in clock that has a battery backup, no need to constantly set the time
- The delay timer is easy to set and works well
- Easy to clean
I've used this rice cooker several times now and compared to my old rice cooker, this one does a better job. The rice is more evenly cooked, the rice at the top is cooked exactly the same as the rice on the bottom. Our old rice cooker was not as consistent. The only thing I would have liked to see included is some sort of cable management, as-is the AC cable just flops around on our counter.

- Reviewed in Canada on July 10, 2025This rice cooker truly stands out for its exceptional craftsmanship and sleek, contemporary design that complements any modern kitchen. The preset cooking modes are thoughtfully tailored for a variety of grains, making it incredibly convenient whether you're preparing jasmine rice, quinoa, or steel-cut oats.
The LED display is crisp and intuitive, adding to the ease of use. I was especially impressed by the inner bowl—it feels substantial and well-made, with a thick gauge and a high-quality ceramic non-stick coating that makes cleanup effortless.
And while some might find the cheerful chime signaling the end of cooking a bit much, I personally enjoy the charming touch—it adds personality to the appliance.
Overall, it’s a blend of style, practicality, and premium quality that’s hard to beat.
