From the manufacturer

Synology 25 Plus Series NAS ranging from 2 to 8 bay, scalable to 18 bay epansion units (DX525)
Backuup for Creators

Powerful performance for modern workflows

Powered by a quad-core AMD Ryzen V1500B processor and 8 GB of ECC memory (expandable to 32 GB), the DS1525+ delivers up to 1,181 MB/s read and 1,180 MB/s write throughput. With the optional 10GbE upgrade card, plus support for both M.2 NVMe and 2.5” SATA SSDs, external hard drives and third-party cloud services quickly become obsolete.

Optimized for every stage of your creative process

Automatic ingestion – Import new files directly from USB into an all-flash pool using SNV5400 or SNV3400 enterprise NVMe SSDs. Utilize the NAS to store high resolution images and videos and generate proxy files for faster edits in the tool of your choice.

Editing performance – Collaborate on projects stored on SAT5200 enterprise SATA SSDs; with 10GbE networking, multiple editors can work without bottlenecks.

Seamless archiving – Offload completed work to a high-capacity HDD pool on a DX525 expansion unit, automatically building a long-term archive of your portfolio.

Triple the expandability

Scale your storage to 15 drives with up to two DX525 expansion units. Synology’s on-the-fly volume expansion and hot-swappable bays allow you to grow without downtime, ensuring continuous availability for mission-critical work.

Better together: multi-unit advantages

Adding a second Synology NAS multiplies value by improving redundancy, enabling collaboration, and unlocking enterprise-grade flexibility:

  • Two-way file synchronization between remote teams
  • Off-site backup for disaster recovery
  • Hybrid cloud expansion for scalable workloads
  • Multi-site surveillance deployments with centralized management

  • Quad-core AMD Ryzen CPU with ECC memory for stability
  • Up to 32 GB ECC memory for demanding workloads
  • Up to 1,181 MB/s read / 1,180 MB/s write throughput
  • 2 x M.2 NVMe SSD slots for caching or dedicated storage pools
  • Built-in tools for file sync, sharing, and collaboration
  • Snapshot and backup protection against ransomware
  • Network upgrade slot supporting optional 10GbE

I own an older DS1522 5 bay Synology NAS and love it. Additionally I own a really old DROBO that finally decided to die. It too was a 5 bay NAS that I had populated with Western Digital RED drives... all five the exact same 4TB model. So I thought it would be a simple solution to buy another Synology NAS and populate it with my WD drives, as they're a significant investment in their own right. Should work, since 3rd party drives work just fine in my DS1522, right?

Wrong! Synology has set up all their new NAS appliances such that they will only work with their proprietary Synology hard drives, which, guess what? Cost significantly more than Western Digital or other 3rd party equivalent drives. I can't support predatory and monopolistsic practices like that, and as such I'll never buy another Synology product in the future. If for some reason you must have Synology equipment, you've been forwarned... otherwise I recommend that you avoid them like the plague. The only way to teach manufacturers that they've made a poor engineering and marketing decision is to vote with your wallet.

People are negatively reviewing this product because they haven’t done any research before purchasing.

Yes - it is true that you must use Synology HDDs, as has been widely reported and publicly announced by Synology. However, I was able to get Synology Plus 16TB HDDs for $300 so I am not too upset that I had to use their HDDs. If it helps Synology better support/service their product, I’ll stick with their drives as long as they as similarly priced and spec’d (which in this case, they are).

Other than that, this is a great NAS. Stock CPU and RAM is more than enough for my use. 2x2.5gbe is welcome, plus the ability to upgrade to 10gbe.

Device is well built - similar to its predecessors. And quieter than I expected.

Honestly, I am happy with this as my first NAS.

Good-bye, Synology. It's been a nice decade+ run. Never going to trust you, again, however. If I need to pay this much just to have a small NAS, then I'll find a used NetApp or something. I feel physically ill, like I am getting a divorce, or something. I LOVED you, maaaaan.

If you are thinking that you can get this stupid thing, populate it with unsupported drives, then use the supported drive database hack, forget it. You will not even be able to boot it up past the attached screen to install DSM and be able to enable sshd so that you can apply those. It comes pre-bricked for you, in other words.

I can buy a used NetApp (the biggest name in enterprise level NAS) for much cheaper. Ridiculous.
