Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read.

New York Times bestselling author Robert McCammon’s prescient and astonishing vision of a post-apocalyptic United States comes to life in this classic epic of terror and renewal.

Facing down an unprecedented malevolent enemy, the US government responds with a nuclear attack. Soon, America as it was is gone forever, and now every citizen—from the president of the United States to the homeless on the streets of New York City—will fight to stay alive. In a wasteland born of rage and fear, populated by monstrous creatures and marauding armies, Earth’s last survivors are drawn into the final battle between good and evil, which will decide the fate of humanity: Sister, who discovers a strange and transformative glass artifact in the destroyed Manhattan streets…Joshua Hutchins, the pro wrestler who takes refuge from the nuclear fallout at a Nebraska gas station...and Swan, a young girl possessing special powers, who travels alongside Josh to a Midwest town where healing and recovery can begin with her extraordinary gifts. But the ancient force behind the world’s devastation is scouring the walking wounded for recruits to build its relentless army, beginning with Swan herself…

This is my 4th copy of the book - this one was an audio copy. I love this novel. The graphic post-apocalyptic scene, the plot, the character development, this book has it all. It is one of those books you just don't want to put down or turn off. I highly recommend it.

I read this book when it first was published years ago and it was so good that I kept it. Over the years it became a gem in my collection of favorite books that I would pick up and read very few years and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Unfortunately, my books are now in storage but this book haunts me and I knew, since I hadn't read it in years, that I wanted to reread it. So, I bought the Kindle e-book (I rarely buy ebooks because there's just something about holding a book in your hands, turning the pages that is so satisfying),
I'm actually quite happy I did because this post-nuclear war novel still holds up today and feels fresh and current after many years. A rare thing to accomplish but Robert R McCammon does it with interesting and compelling characters that stick with you both the good and the bad. You can see yourself a bit in each character because most of the characters are puzzles in themselves and part of a greater puzzle that makes you want to know who they are and where they'll end up before the last chapters. This is a really great read for anyone who loves this genre.

Late to the party! I started reading it because of the presumed comparison between this story and King's The Stand. Prepared to hate it, because who can do better than Stephen King? Well, I didn't hate it i really enjoyed it immensely! Really want to know what happened after....

I had wnated to read this for awhile, as it had some very high ratings. 鶹 had it on at a reduced price and I picked it up.
It was worth reading, even at it’s regular price.
Very much like King’s “The Stand”, but I preferred McCammon’s ending a bit more.
There were some scenes that were a bit weak - the romantic interplay between Swan and another character, for instance - but these were minor lapses in an otherwise very good book.

Monotonous story that drags on and on. Starts strong but goes on way too long with repetitive plot lines that just take way too long.

Wow, just WOW!!! My husband has been researching nuclear war for months due to the conflict in Ukraine and the present-day threats from Vladimir Putin. We have both watched multiple documentaries on nuclear weapons to increase our knowledge and to familiarize ourselves with what would happen if nuclear war became a reality (it is absolutely terrifying). He had a dear friend who suggested I read this book, and I am so thankful for the suggestion. It is eerie how realistic the event was portrayed by the author. Aside from the magical realism, this book could very well be what life would be like after nuclear war. It was written in 1987 and as a fan of the 80’s, that made it even more enjoyable for me.

The book begins with the apocalypse…the U.S. and Russia bombing each other…the U.S. is now a wasteland and those that survived the multiple missile attacks have a very long and hard journey ahead of them. From there, the book is divided into sections describing the journey multiple groups of people are on; GOOD AND EVIL. All of these groups will eventually face one another. There is Sister Creep, one of the toughest characters you will come across in a book. Her journey starts out as a homeless woman in the NY city subway system. After the apocalypse, while traveling the streets of Manhattan, she acquires a mysterious beautiful ring of glass that gives her the ability to see into the future. There is Swan, who is a young girl who starts her journey with a man named Josh Hutchins, previously known as the Black Frankenstein, from his wrestling days. Josh’s main mission is to now protect Swan due to her special capabilities and powers. Then, there is the pure evil Army of Excellence, which is ran by Colonel Macklin and his protégé, Roland Croninger. The things they do along their journey are disgusting and sickening. Then of course, there is the man of many faces, aka the man with the Scarlet Eye. His mission is to destroy Swan because with her magical abilities, she may be able to just save the world.

The writing in this book was outstanding and engaging. You quickly will learn which characters to love and hate. McCammon did an excellent job of portraying what you would have to rely on for food sources after nuclear war, what the environmental conditions would be like (nuclear winter), even going as far as having characters with Job’s Mask, which is black growths and warts caused from radiation that consumed the entire faces of many characters. There is the involvement of wildlife and what it would be like for wolves to go hungry and the impact that had on the remaining human life. He took into consideration vehicles no longer having access to gasoline, people no longer having fresh water and how that impacted their bodies and day to day life. Of course, there is the mental illness factor. Some people transform into completely different individuals based off of just trying to survive. There are the groups that form and the mistrust you feel when initially coming across a new group and having to ask and depend on them for food and water. The details just go on and on and were just incredible. To say I was impressed with the book would be an understatement. If you are into post-apocalyptic books, this one is the cream of the crop!

Even though this book is a whopping 956 pages, do not let that deter you from picking up this GEM! It reads quickly and keeps you engaged throughout the entire book. It took me about a month to get through it, but that is only because I had so many work projects going on that were consuming all of my time. Do yourself a favor and read this masterpiece!

5.0 out of 5 stars An old favourite that never disappoints.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 7, 2013

I first read Swan Song in 2011, shortly before I started blogging, and I was completely blown away by it. I read the whole 956 pages over the space of just one weekend and I've always wanted to go back and re-read it, so when the audiobook was on sale a few months ago, I had the perfect excuse to go back and experience it again.

The characters are numerous, but there are only a few real key players in Swan Song - the good, the bad and the terribly ugly. After her mother breaks up with the latest in a string of loser boyfriends, Swan finds herself at a lonely gas station when tensions between America and Russia ends in nuclear war, and in the subsequent nuclear winter, travels across the country in the company of Josh. Swan is a character that is impossible not to love - she's calm, serene and intrinsically good, Josh is the friendly giant, who will do anything to protect Swan from the various evils that emerge in the human survivors around, and Sister is the former alcoholic with a sad past who is on a journey without knowing the reason or the destination. By the end of such a marathon book, I knew and loved all of them.

By focusing on just a few key characters so intensely, Mr. McCammon has ensured that they are all the complete package - and if you love to hate baddies, there are baddies aplenty in the pages of Swan Song - from the insane to the megalomaniacs who see the end of the world as the perfect opportunity to have their own kingdoms, no matter what the cost.

Good world-building is an important element in any post-apocalyptic story, and in Swan Song the world building is second-to-none - bearing in mind that the book was originally published in 1987, there are no extraordinary technologies, and instead characters survive just on wits and their ability to scavenge. As a horror novel, there are some very intense, confronting scenes that have some gore but it avoids falling into the slasher category as the scenes are well written rather than resorting just to shock tactics.

There are also a few paranormal elements that creep into the story, and although they are not the key focus of the book overall, it adds an extra element that made this more than the standard post-apocalyptic fare.

Although slightly predictable in some parts, the plot is fast paced and still kept my attention the second time around, even though I knew what the outcome of the story would be. I really like the way that the author ended a story that can never really be concluded due to the complexities of the plot, but worked perfectly for me and I finished it once again feeling very satisfied with the experience.

Swan Song is a post-apolcayptic horror at it's most entertaining - it's intense, dark and spine chillingly scary.

    The Audio Version

Tom Stechschulte has narrated an impressive array of books in the post-apocalyptic genre and his voice is perfectly suited to the story - dark, intense and at times incredibly creepy. The only thing that I was missing was individual character dialogue really standing out, but overall the narration was a perfect match.
