Product description
Comedy legend Carl Reiner (Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid) directed this tale of a family man who takes a vacation from sanity when he takes a lease on a Florida Summer Rental. Comedy icon John Candy (Uncle Buck) plays the stressed-out air traffic controller whose much-needed family holiday yields one hysterical misadventure after another—from settling into his hovel, to settling down on a “party” beach, to settling the score with a nut at sea. The fun’s in the sun, and so’s the moral: taking it easy is tougher than landing a 747! Co-starring Richard Crenna (The Flamingo Kid), Rip Torn (Dodgeball), John Larroquette (Blind Date), Kerri Green (The Goonies), Joey Lawrence (TV’s Blossom) and Karen Austin (The Ladies Club).
Special Features:
• Brand New HD Master – From a 4K Scan of the 35mm Original Camera Negative

• Ear Candy: The Music of Summer Rental – A NEW Featurette by Entertainment Journalists Max Evry (10:14)

- Reviewed in Canada on March 12, 2025Verified PurchaseCarl Reiner (Dick Van Dyke Show) directed this John Candy Film. Candy is an air traffic controller who needs a vacation, stressed out. He takes his family to Florida, 1 son 2 daughters, wife and dog, they end up in a lovely house and find out that this is the wrong house for their vacation. The house they rented is near a beach and alongside the path to the beach and has lots of tourists walking alongside the house, also another house next door is the home of the beach safety squad. He visits a restaurant and meets Richard Crenna an obnoxious person. Rip Torn is hilarious as the owner of a restaurant using a boat. Torn helps Candy learn the ropes of sailing a boat. Candy bets Crenna that he can outsail Crenna and bets $1,000 and if he loses he will vacate the house they are renting which Crenna now owns. Candy's family helps outfit the restaurant boat to sail in a regatta. Very funny film and Candy is great in his role. Highly recommended.

- Reviewed in Canada on November 12, 2024Verified PurchaseGreat for the whole family.
- Reviewed in Canada on July 6, 2021Verified PurchaseI gotta say, watching old 80s childhood faves is always a risky game - the jokes often don't land, or are incredibly insensitive or purely offensive (hello, 'Sixteen Candles'), but it's rather refreshing to watch this movie and have none of that! Sure, the jokes are campy, and there are some ridiculous gags that run though the film. But, that's kinda what you expect from an 80's John Candy film. In conclusion, it's exactly what you think it's going to be, and you don't have to cringe the entire time you're waiting for a joke that just doesn't stand the text of time.
Plus. Everyone loves John Candy. So there's that!

- Reviewed in Canada on January 14, 2022Verified PurchaseThis is an oldie, but a goodie. Classic John Candy style film. Wholesome humor that any age can watch. No funny business, just a good family movie. Yes, it's old for today's standards, but it's fun to watch and to go back in time to the '80s!
Great addition to any movie collection.
- Reviewed in Canada on November 15, 2021Verified PurchaseI remember this film as a kid, a better time in life where movies were fun, no political nonsense, just good storytelling with relatable characters and good laughs. John Candy always brought the laughs and people were drawn to him, I still miss him to this day. I was happy to see this title on Prime.

5.0 out of 5 stars “Avast, Ye Scurvy Swabs!!!”
Verified Purchase“We’re gonna win this race, right Admiral!?!” They certainly don’t make them like this any more! Back in the 1980’s, movies had heart. And when I say heart, the late-great John Candy really delivers. There were so many genuinely funny and family-driven moments in this great film. I honestly had forgotten even a Jimmy Buffet song is featured during the restoration of the Barnacle! You can also tell the cast had a lot of fun putting this all together, as compared with movies today where the cast all hate each other and don’t even want to be in the movie. It was also interesting to see the late-great Richard Crenna play such a villain! I’m used to seeing him as the father-like Colonel Samuel Trautman in the Rambo movies. It’s a great movie right up there with Chevy Chase’s “National Lampoon’s Vacation” and John Cusack’s “Better Off Dead.” If you enjoyed those, you will definitely enjoy this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Stuff!!!!
Verified PurchaseI watched this years and years ago when i was a kid growing up, and its just as good now as i remembered!! The films easy to watch and brings quite a few good laughs, and it doesnt drag on for too long either. This is a bonus but also a little frustrating to as the films ends extremely quick after the finale scene. If your a fan of the 80's then buy this!!!
