Driven by the cinematic songwriting and superb guitar playing of Mark Knopfler, Dire Straits is one of rock's most successful bands. This new 20-bit remastered anthology takes in everything from the title track (the band's 1st hit, from their 1978 debut LP) through such classics as "Romeo And Juliet" and "Money for Nothing," plus the band's epic live rendition of "Love Over Gold" and "Wild Theme - Theme from Local Hero," from Knopfler's acclaimed movie score.

This compilation repeats seven tracks from 1988's Money For Nothing anthology. Given that Mark Knopfler and crew have recorded one new album during the decade between best-of collections, how different could Sultans of Swing be? For one thing, CD dominance has made for longer compilations, and this one is fleshed out by singles, three tracks from 1991's On Every Street, and Knopfler's solo "Local Hero" theme, performed live. More importantly, the second track here is the band's terrific second single, "Lady Writer," previously only available on the otherwise dismal dzܲԾé LP. Five tracks from Dire Straits' huge Brothers in Arms LP appear here, but only two tracks surface from Making Movies, the group's pinnacle achievement. Ultimately, if you own Making Movies and this compilation, you own the essential Dire Straits. --Bill Holdship

    Mark Knopfler's unique finger picking guitar sound alone is worth the money for this compilation. I wasn't a big fan of much of the 80s music, but Dire Straights was certainly an exception. Dylan fans will also recognize that guitar on three albums, including Slow Train and Infidels...two of my favs. If you only buy one Dire Straights album, this is the one. Also, don't forget Live Aid (f you were around back in 85). I want my MTV had to be one of the best moments of that huge event.
