    This item works great and brought my craftsman riding lawn mower back to its original state and is like a new riding lawn mower. Craftsman model number is 917271022. Works great I will buy again. Also good product and good price. Installation is easy but if you are not mechanically inclined then the install would be hard.

    Got this thing all installed, had to tap threads in it but no biggie, then one lap around the lawn and the whole steering column came loose. Took it all back apart, screwed it back in thinking the factory had barely screwed it on, got the whole machine put together again, one more lap around the yard and it came loose again. Terrible design. Will appempt to fix this defective design with a set screw

    I have a Craftsman riding mower built in April 2000. This assembly was not listed as a replacement for my mower, but the seller said it would work. I was able to install it and it seems to work OK, but it is not as robust as the original. The U-bracket that the mechanism installs into was a thinner guage metal, as was the lever that drives the steering rod. I don't know if the original was over-designed, but so far it seems to work. Note that you will need some additional hardware to install this if you have an older mower. As noted, the U-bracket was thinner metal. The original steering gear sector used thread-forming (a type of self-tapping) screws to mount it. The replacement bracket is too thin to get enough threads to securely bolt it to the frame. I bought slightly longer machine thread bolts and used flat washers and nylock nuts on both sides. Worked well, but one nut was a little difficult to get to.

    I bought this for my poulan mower that I bought new in 1999. This part is identical as far as I can see. The holes are not tapped for the threads but I used the original self tapping bolts that held on the original bracket to cut new threads and I did this before I mounted it. Also based on the negative reviews I disassembled this new steering assembly and I put lock tight on the bolts that retain the shafts so they won't come loose. ( Seems to be the biggest complaint). Just mark the parts for easy assembly. Installed, the steering hasn't felt this good since the mower was new! I'll update if anything changes.
