- Reviewed in Canada on January 30, 2025Verified PurchaseMy wife and I are delighted with this compact waffle maker! We prefer this 7" "medium" size over the 4" "minis" (okay for kids, but not very efficient for grown-ups) and the larger "full-size" ones (harder to handle).
Round "Belgian" waffle makers (hereafter called "WM") like this one are also much easier to use than rectangular ones, as you can ladle the right amount of batter right into the centre, rather than having to spread it around a squared shape to get it to cook to the WM's edges. (Whoever thought of a rectangular WM must've had square tires on their car!)
If you've never made waffles, you may get a few over-spills as you try to gauge how much batter to use at a time. You can improve your chances by ladling in a bit less batter, rather than more, until you get a feeling for the right amount.
This Starfrit WM performed beautifully. Unlike some of our previous WMs, we had no sticking problems, having "seasoned" it with a bit of oil the first time (see below), and being sure our recipes included a couple tablespoons of oil or melted butter.
Important things to remember:
• The first time you use your WM:
_ "Season" it by wiping a small amount of vegetable oil on its cooking surfaces.
_ Discard (don't eat) the very first waffle you make, as it may absorb a bit of the non-stick cooking surface. (It's sad, I know, but do it anyway.) This is necessary only the first time you use the WM. (The manual mentions this too, but it's not quite as clear.)
• Rather than using white sugar in your batter, or pouring sugar-added syrups on your waffles, consider pouring pure maple syrup. It costs more, and it still contains sugar—but being a natural product rather than a refined unnatural one, it takes longer to break down in your body, avoiding the sudden metabolic shock of white sugar.
• Before you ladle in a new waffle, always be sure the green "ready" like is on, indicating the WM is fully heated.
• Once you've added batter and closed the lid, nothing will happen for a while; then steam will start coming out. DON'T open the WM until ALL the steam has finished. You'll see stages of less and more steam; this is normal (something to do with how the waffle cooks). When ALL the steam is done, your patience will be rewarded as you remove your nice, crisp, properly-cooked waffle.
• When you remove a waffle and have more to go, close the WM's lid right away to keep it hot. If you leave it open, you may need to wait a while for the "ready" light to come on again.
• DON'T move or touch the WM while it's cooking. The steam that comes out of it is very hot, as are the areas around the cooking surfaces.
• Don't immerse your WM in water, or use soap or other cleaning solutions on it. Once it's cool, just wipe it down with a damp rag or paper towel to remove any waffle bits, and you'll be good to go next time.

- Reviewed in Canada on December 26, 2023Verified PurchaseSo just for reference sake, I'm an executive chef and have worked all over the world for the last 30 plus years. I'm used to using heavy duty professional equipment. Often when I'm buying kitchen products for my home, I have to keep them in mind that I'm not buying professional gear and I can't expect it to work the same way.
I can't attest to longevity of the product yet, but so far I'm (surprisingly) pretty impressed!
First thing of note that I was most surprised about is how quickly it heats up. Literally, a couple of minutes and it's ready to go. I often make grilled cheese in my waffle maker because I think it looks cool and it actually tastes kind of interesting as well. By the time I butter the bread, open up the cheese and get it sliced, it's heated up from ice cold to ready to go.
I used it four or five times now to make waffles and it does a pretty damn good job. There are 2 engineering catches that they could implement to make this product even better with minimal cost. First thing would be to put a three setting temperature dial on it. The temperature is on Mark for just making waffles in general, but sometimes different batters require slightly different temperatures. A variation of 10 to 20° on low and high would make a big difference and provide some flexibility for use. Different batters cook different ways and being able to adjust the temperature can really help. The second thing that they could fix is not having a fixed hinge. A floating hinge basically allows the top part of the unit to sit level instead of sitting on an angle when you close it and your waffles start to fluff. I noticed when I make my grilled cheese, they come out wedge-shaped because the part of the bread that's closest to the hinge gets pinched hard while the part furthest from the hinge can't quite close all the way so you end up with this kind of odd shape. For making waffles however, most of the time you're not going to be putting enough batter in that it floats the lid up as it expands, but it does happen a bit. This can result in batter coming out the sides or you end up with a slightly wedge-shaped waffle. Again it depends on the recipe you're using and how much your batter expands when it cooks. With these two improvements, this product would be an outstanding deal. It's already a pretty good deal and seems to work quite well compared to several of the other types I've tried.
Cooking heat dispersion on both plates is pretty even, but you will notice that your waffles are slightly darker in the middle than they are on the outside. This is very common for at home appliances such as Panini presses and things like that. It should be also noted that the no stick surface works very well. Of course, don't use any kind of metal utensils. Hit the dollar store and buy a pair of plastic tip tongs.
Even with the lack of a floating hinge and no temperature adjustments.. this is a really good waffle maker for at home use. It's pretty quick, the heat is very even and so far it seems to be running like a champ. As long as you're not putting in too much batter, you should not have anything dripping over the sides. The one time I did do that, clean up was very easy.
It may not be professional grade, but it's better than almost any other home waffle maker I've ever tried. (Keep in mind that a top notch professional waffle press can cost well over $1,000) You can't beat the price of this unit. If this thing lasts, it will be a great buy.
