I have an older model Traeger 22” smoker, that I inherited from my Dad and I love using to torture the neighbourhood with all my delicious smoked cooking. Unfortunately, the hopper capacity is not great for extra long cooks like a big pork shoulder or brisket. I usually find myself having to top up the pellets partway through the cook to make sure I don’t run out. It’s a whole procedure to re-charge the pellet auger if it gets clogged or runs empty, so it’s something I try to avoid.

I ordered this unit to add extra pellet capacity to my grill. It does just that, but I have some concerns. It’s easy to fill, but once filled, you have to let the pellets run down before it can be removed. There’s no flap or cover to slide under it to remove it partially full. If you add too many pellets, you’d need to scoop them out by hand before removing it from your grill. This is important because of my second complaint: there is nothing to keep rainwater from slipping down the sides of it and into the main hopper. If you like to grill in the rain, you’d have to set up a cover to keep the water out, because water turns smoker pellets into mush that hardens into a brick (and can do serious damage to your smoker!) It also doesn’t fit under covers designed to fit this type of smoker, so you can’t just leave it installed all the time.

I’m sure I will use it when I’m planning a really long cook and I want it to run unattended for a long time, but for my normal usage times (4-6 hours) it just doesn’t make sense for me.

I deducted one star for all my complaints, but a slightly better design with some form of waterproofing would make this a 5-star item.

This hopper will help to make grilling longer and make cooking periods low and slow. This will make the food more enjoyable and juicy. I love that the hopper is nicely built, and I can just remove it from the box and start using it. I do not have to fix or alter anything. The hopper feels durable and will last for a long time.

It does what it is described as doing. I wish there was a bracket included to bolt it down to the base hopper as it does get top heavy if you need to move the smoker and could fall off. Not a big enough deal to mark it down though as a I can easily add something to it.
