I find these and the 7506 will give you electric shocks if you're wearing socks on carpet, So I put a pair of clean shoes on and I never got the static shock again. Beautiful headphones would recommend to buy 2, One to use and one to store away.

Bought these as I needed closed back headphones for a flight. After receiving these headphones and listening to music, I found these to be my new favorite sounding headphones. I own both the 6XX and 800s and main both until these guys showed up. Although some reviews state the headphones to be uncomfortable, I personally find these to be comfortable. Highly recommend these headphones. Super surprised these headphones aren't well known.

Picked this one for modification, there are many possibility but the backbone of this pair is absolutely the crown jewel in the monitoring headphone's world, IMO.

Going for BTL + foldable mod soon. Would rather not adding plug on the shell as it's not designed to do so. And additional interface will certainly contaminate the signal stream so no.

They came in a cheap brown box, mine, the 1/4 jack was faulty while moving the wire around. But the 1 star is not for the faulty jack or the box. The sound quality of these headphones is far from the audiophile grade, some voice frequencies too strong, bass too strong and some voice range, not crystal clear like an old pair of MDR.

The new MDR-5706 and those MDR-CD900ST are pretty bad.. if you are looking for an audiophile HD product, if you like ECM jazz, you absolutely need to buy something better.

These headphone are not professional or studio grade anything anymore, nothing like the older models.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trust, not promises

There are allot of new amazing headphones out there, all with 'promises, promises'.. The MDR CD900 ST are the last of the loved MDR red band models.. 'They don't build them like they used too !!'.. Yes they do... these are it. 'There has to be a middle ground, a reference we can all work from'.. these are it. 'It's a harsh line between a studio headphone that's flat & a hi fi headphone that makes everything sound great'., These are it. If you're young & itchy, go buy yourself a pair of the Rode NTH100, if you've been in the industry longer than the young have been alive, & you don't want to risk regret with the MDR-M1ST.. treat yourself to a trusted classic. These are the bright eyed, slightly older but hotter sister of the MDR7506. Only negative, (which isn't really a negative ) is that these are 'on ear' not 'over ear' but don't let that put you off, check out YAXI ear pads.. as pictured, amazing.. even with my massive ears, turned these into the most comfortable over ear headphones I've ever worn, could not be happier.

5.0 out of 5 stars Used by Pros in Japan for a Reason — Read Why
Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2025

I've had these headphones for 2 years now and they are phenomenal in terms of studio monitoring, flat sound, vocal mixing and midrange sounds. I've waited this long to 'review' this headphone mainly for durability purposes to see if it'll hold up. I record and make music casually/as a hobby/for music youtube channel. I've seen people in the comments seem to be using this headphones for casual listening. They're not meant for that. A lot of people who are used to “mainstream” headphones like Bose, Sony WH-1000XM series, or even AirPods Max often feel underwhelmed by the CD900ST at first. This is the gold standard in Japan and why a lot of studios in Japan (and other parts of Asia and the world) uses these headphones:

First is its neutral, flat sound signature. These are not meant to sound good in the usual sense like Bose or Airpods Max or Senheisser, they’re meant to be accurate. They don’t hype up the bass or gloss over harshness. If something sounds bad, it WILL sound bad. That’s exactly what recording engineers want who designed this headphone an unfiltered version of the track, so don't go tweaking stuff with the EQ.

Second is the tried-and-trrue industry standard (in Japan ofc). Since the late ‘80s, this headphone has been the gold standard in Japanese recording studios. NHK (Japan’s national broadcaster) basically made them standard across the board too. You’ll find them in places like Avex, Sony Music Studios Tokyo, etc. It’s more of a cultural and professional legacy choice now tbh, but if you watch The First Take on Youtube or other Japanese Music Youtubers who does song covers, a lot of them uses this.

Third is durability and serviceability and why I truly waited to write this review. This thing is built like a tank, no cap. And because they’re so widely used in japan, parts are easy to find in Japan--at least for me because I go to Japan every year. Anyway, I've only replaced the earpads so far, but the drivers and even cable is easily swappable and repairable.

Last but not least is this is designed for studio monitoring, not casual listenin--they’re tuned for midrange clarity and vocal precision (which is great if you sing a lot like I do). It's especially helpful for mixing vocals (lead, backing, harmonies etc.) or tracking them. But that can come across as thin or boring compared to mainstream consumer headphones that a lot of the people are used to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelentes mucho mejores para trabajar que los MDR7506
Reviewed in Mexico on August 2, 2024
