From the manufacturer
A small, bright 35 for breathtaking images

Sony’s most advanced technology is packed into this high-performance E-mount lens, delivering eye-opening G Master resolution and bokeh with extraordinary AF speed and precision. For a large aperture 35-mm lens it is remarkably compact, and a great choice for applications where an ideal blend of mobility and superb image quality is required.
Amazing resolution in a compact 35-mm prime for any situation
Two XA (extreme aspherical) elements in a G Master design take advantage of the short mirrorless flange-back distance to deliver stunning contrast and resolution in a compact lens. Further enhancing the lens’s superior optical quality are an ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element that suppresses chromatic aberration and Sony’s Nano AR Coating II that maintains superb image clarity even in any lighting conditions.
Lightweight and compact for excellent mobility and handling
Even though it employs two precision XA (extreme aspherical) elements and delivers outstanding G Master quality, this compact lens fits easily in the palm of your hand and weighs only 18.5 oz (524 g). The FE 35 mm F1.4 GM offers excellent mobility and handling in the widest possible range of environments and shooting conditions.
Refined G Master bokeh and broad versatility
XA elements suppress onion ring bokeh, an 11-blade aperture mechanism produces an almost circular aperture even when the lens is wide open, and painstaking spherical aberration control at the design and manufacturing stages contribute to gorgeous bokeh at F1.4. Design and manufacturing refinements have made it possible to deliver a minimum focusing distance of 0.89 ft (27 cm) and maximum magnification of 0.23x.
XD Linear Motors ensure fast, precise, quiet AF and tracking
Two of Sony’s remarkable XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors provide the high thrust efficiency needed for fast, precise, quiet AF and tracking, maximizing the advantages of the E-mount system. State-of-the-art control algorithms developed specifically for the XD Linear Motors minimize vibration and noise, while Sony’s Linear Response MF feature provides direct, linear manual focus response.
Professional control and reliability
A focus hold button, focus ring, and other controls support smooth, efficient operation. The focus hold button can be assigned to a number of other functions via a camera body menu, providing direct access to functions that are vital to the user’s personal workflow. A fluorine front element coating plus a dust- and moisture-resistant design2 ensure high reliability in challenging environments.

- Reviewed in Canada on June 9, 2025Verified PurchaseBrilliant lens.
Context:
I also own a 50mm 1.4 GM lens, great lens. I do paid work to photograph venues and events and both of these lenses do the job very well given a lot of these venues are in low light.
Why I needed this 35mm was to capture the environment more. Many situations made the 50mm a bit tight and found myself with my back up against the wall to capture the moments.
Both of these lenses do well with a photographer who capture pictures that tell a story. A picture is worth a thousand words after all. This is where the 35mm really shines. It's a story telling focal length and in the right hands, it will do that job very well.
If I had to do it all over, I'd pick the 35mm first and gauge if a 50mm is needed. Which from what I see I don't think I need anymore and may sell the 50mm.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic lens!
Verified PurchaseThis lens is a perfect fit for my A7CR - fast, optically fantastic, lightweight (relatively speaking), well-built, and compact. So sharp it is ridiculous. Autofocus is spot on and very fast paired with the aforementioned camera. This was the first lens I purchased with my recent camera equipment refresh cycle and would likely be my choice if I had only one lens. The fast aperture allows very low light work and the lens performs so well wide open. Also, since it is a first party lens, it works with Sony's lens breathing compensation, which is available on newer Sony bodies during video shooting. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars great lens for the price
Verified PurchaseLet me say this, I don't like spending much money. But ive decided to pick up photography as a new recent hobby and after upgrading from a iPhone 11 Pro. I purchased a Sony a7c and this lens.
coming from someone that knows absolutely nothing about these types of cameras and settings. I was a bit afraid spending this much Money to get into the hobby ( I don't enjoy upgrading once I get use to something so I decided to go all out at first).
first off this lens is AMAZING. Focus is amazing, weight is amazing. it is a great lens for everything I throw at it. I mostly take car photography and street. After taking a few hours watching videos on this lens and how to use it. ive taken some great pictures. I lent my setup to my buddy that takes pictures professionally and he was blown away by its performance. Great lens. Don't worry about the price. You will not regret your purchase one bit.
Edit: After almost 2 years with this lens, It is still my #1 lens. Every photo I have ever taken with it looks AMAZING. Super fast auto fucus on my m a7R V. Ive used it in hard rain, snow, mud, and 110 degree conditions and its never failed. If you are looking for a 35mm lens... This is the one.

Verified PurchaseI like it. The focal length is great for landscape and close ups. The aperture is wide so it allows you shoot indoor with no problems. Autofocus is quick.
